Artistic Heritage Baptismal Font (Church of Our Lady of the Street - Redecilla del Camino) STYLE Romanesque, with Mozarabic influences PERIOD 12th Century LOCATION Church of Our Lady of the Street, in the baptistery, Epistle side This is one of the best examples of Romanesque fonts preserved in the province of Burgos. It lacks a base and stands on a foot formed by eight semi-columns attached to a circular core. The crown has a carved mouthpiece, and its decoration is arranged in narrow bands, which overlap in four levels without leaving empty spaces. These levels are separated by fine imposts with pearly and interlaced motifs. Doors and windows of different appearance are depicted, which together form an imaginary city (heavenly Jerusalem), defended by eight semicircular towers in high relief, which coincide with each of the lobes of the mouthpiece, and by eight machicolations crowned with triangular roofs The baptismal font of Redecilla del Camino is a remarkably original element, mainly due to its decorative theme, which departs from the usual motifs related to the Camino de Santiago and the influence of French Romanesque. According to various authors, the motifs that appear on it resemble those created by medieval miniaturists with Hispanic roots. The proximity of Redecilla to the Abbey of San Millán de la Cogolla, the most important center of Castilian Mozarabism, could explain this. The decoration of the font represents the heavenly Jerusalem defended by eight towers.

"The Ermita Virgen de la Peña was built to honor a discovery of the image of the child Jesus, which, legend has it, was found on this site in 712. (The timeline doesn’t mesh, as the sculpture is from the 12th century, but it’s still a lovely place and a lovely story.)"
