It is finally happening. The great AT trip is finally underway. Currently at LA airport waiting for the connecting flight to Washington, the onto Bangor in Maine.
Arrive at midnight in Bangor and the shuttle leaves in that arvo, so I'll be staying in a hotel. Feeling very frazzled right now, was given the 3rd degree by immigration (they really want an address where I'll be staying. "camping wherever" doesn't go down well with them), took a while to find my pack (but the time I was released by immigration, the other passengers had all collected their luggage and left, and the airport staff had cleared the carousel), then I couldn't find a quick way to get into LA and back in time for my flight. Just decided to play it safe and sit at the airport instead.
I'm thinking I'll stay an extra day in Bangor so I can take my time buying supplies and do some extra planning for the first part of the trail.
Things to note in LAX - the PA keeps announcing that there is to be no soliciting at the airport. Scavenging out of the bins is also banned according to the signage.
Also some guy tripped over backwards on the escalator. I was behind him and managed to catch him by his shoulders and keep his head from colliding with the steps. All his luggage spilled down the escalator like an avalanche though. He didn't really thank me either, just seemed deeply embarrassed. Oh well, you are welcome Guy.
Security at the airport is overdone and not as efficient as at Sydney. It was more of a process going through domestic security here than international at Sydney.

Flew from LA to Washington, got to see the Washington Monument for half a second as it flashed past the window as we landed. Great, I said to the guy next to me, now I've seen it I can cross that one off my list. Plane was late and boarding for the next flight was due to start 10 minutes after we landed. Made it myself but anxious if my checked bag could be sorted out from the rest of the luggage and transferred to my plane in time.
Why can't people just sit in their assigned seat? Why is that so hard? The seat number is right there on your ticket as you board the plane. Like 70% of the time there are disagreements as to where people should be sitting. Grumble. Grumble. Grumble. You can play swapsies once everyone is boarded, not seemingly just grab whatever seat you fancy and then try negotiate with the person who's seat are clearly sitting on while the line of boarding passengers behind them has to wait.
Despite the seat drama, the rest of the flight was fine. The person next to me commented on my accent, saying "you sound too well travelled to be in Bangor". I think she was not exactly filled with love and pride for her home town. A few of the other passengers chimed in and we had a discussion on hiking, bugs and bears.
Also exciting news of the American experience, I've now had my first police stop! I'd arrived at Bangor airport at midnight, since the hotel was only 2 kms away (or 1.2 miles over here) I decided to just walk it. I was about halfway there when a police car pulled over and asked what I was doing wandering the streets alone in the middle of the night. Though I could tell immediately that my G'day and apparently heavy Australian accent had confused him, not what he was expecting. After some brief banter he told me to not walk on the road and drove off. Brian later opined that it would have been hilarious if I'd entered America only to be immediately arrested. Oh well, there is still plenty of time for that!
At the hotel I had what I thought of as my Last Shower and Last Breakfast Buffet for a while. Although I'm in a hotel in Millinocket and doing the same (The AT starts tomorrow - woo hoo!)
I did a bunch of organising for the AT at the hotel. Called the Baxter State Forest people to book a camping spot, as is required when ascending Mt Katahdin (Ka-Tah-Din not Kata-h-Din, my Uber diver corrected me), and got laughed at for trying to book during a holiday long weekend. Oh, what holiday is that?, I naively enquired. Oh it's just the 4th of July Independence Day weekend. I did a mental face-palm. I was in America at the start of July - how had I not connected the dots? Anyway, the lovely lady could squeeze me in but earlier than planned. Did some rapid rescheduling, dropped my plans for exploring Bangor, rapid shopping for supplies (thanks Walmart!), and with 3.5 hours of night hiking (just completed that) I could just make the timetable.
Other fun things that happened - Walmart, it is huge and has everything. Even guns. They even have colourful miniature guns for the kiddies. Very American. - Bought bear spray from Dick's Sporting Goods, the one thing Walmart didn't have. - Downloaded and called my first Uber. - Had lunch at Wendy's. Have always wanted to do this because of the memes. But it was underwhelming, a notch or two below McDonald's, and place was kind of dingy. - Asked the Uber driver what he was doing on Independence Day, he said "drinking lots of beer and blowing stuff up".
Finally brought my pack up to its full weight by adding the food and water. Now kind of concerned at how heavy it is.
Night hiked from Medway to Millinocket along the road. Lots of mossies. Once a large animal crashed through the forest just off to my right, I had my bear spray ready but fortunately a long column of cars appeared, putting a barrier between me and it. But the time the cars were gone I had moved far enough away from whatever it was.
That's it from this reporter, coming to you from the exotic lands of America. Tomorrow I start the AT!!! Woo hoo Czytaj więcej

Day 1 - Mt Katahdin
4 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C
Ka-Tah-Din, Kat-Har-Din, Ka-Tard-Din... Getting the pronunciation the same as the locals on this one is taking a while. Strange, since at a glance the word appears uncomplicated.
Anyway, where was I? Ah yes...
I awoke several hours later at the Katahdin Inn & Suites, located in the inauspicious building in the photos. To build on the theme, it is located behind a dollar store. But it was the first hotel I saw that had a 24 hour front desk and decent reviews, so there I went. It has a giant indoor area that is currently being renovated. Being inside, they hope to have the pool fully operational so as to attract the winter tourists who come here for snowmobiling and such. Breakfast provided and was decent, I added an orange as I expect a dearth of fresh fruit and veg over the next 6 months. Also there is scurvy to consider. The sign on the coffee machine gave me a good chuckle.
Set out after breaky with Maine Quest Adventures driven by Braint to Mt Katahdin in Baxter State Park. Don't know how long the drive was, felt about 45 minutes. Had many long convos about hiking, life in Maine, the hunting of bears, the pronunciation of Katahdin, and his company (which sounds like a perfect lifestyle occupation).
(The way the Northern trailhead works is this. The trailhead is at the top of a mountain only accessible by hiking. You start at the bottom, already on the AT, and walk to the top. Once at the summit you reach the trailhead and "officially" start your hike. You then move along the AT, down the same path you just came up and camp at the bottom. When you start you can leave your pack at the ranger station and just take a day bag that they lend you. Then return the bag and collect your pack when you get back. Relevant later.)
After a bit of confusion at the gate (couldn't find my name as I'd booked the campsite last minute), we arrived at Katahdin Stream Campground. I was a bit anxious as there are several things that need to happen to make the climb and I was getting increasingly concerned that something would go wrong and I wouldn't be able to climb that day.
You need:
1) a campsite booking
2) a permit to climb the mountain
3) to start the climb before the cut-off time
4) a day pack
I had #1. But when I showed up, the ranger was not at the station. Briant said he would often be gone for hours. After searching around for a bit I did find the stash of day bags, solving problem #4. It was 10am, I didn't know what the cut-off time was and was worried it had past. Also no permit.
Considering my options, I decided it was one of those times that ignorance is more powerful than knowledge. If I didn't know what the cut-off time was, then I couldn't knowingly leave after it had past.
Having had this thought, a plan began to form in my mind. The ranger could potentially deny my climb due to the time cut-off or no more permits for climbers that day. So I decided, like, ehh, I'll just..... climb the mountain regardless of all that.
Frantically I shoved what I needed into the day pack and took off up the mountain. My head on a swivel looking out for the ranger. The Man wasn't going to keep me down today!
Permitless, I proceeded up the mountain. Everything I'd read said Mt Katahdin was no joke, a difficult and technical climb. The first half is easy enough, just forest track that that gets increasingly steep.
Once past the treeline, the difficulty increases. There is a field of huge boulders, large as houses. You need to rock climb from one to another. A lot of scraping, shuffling and hanging on tight, slowly moving along tight rock ledges while being exposed to the wind and steep drops. Some places are impassable, so a few metal rods have been driven into the rock to act as handholds. At one place two large boulders met, you have to shimmy up between them by bracing your hands and feet on either side and crab climb.
All that I found manageable but what took it out of my was the sheer amount of verticality. We just don't have these mountains in Australia.
After a lot, I mean a lot of climbing, I arrived at the near top. There it flattens and there is actually a fair bit of easy horizontal hiking, followed by a small hill to the summit. Success!
After all this time, I had finally started my AT hike. But first, there is a tradition to observe. At either end of the trail there is a large pile of rocks. Thru-hikers traditionally select one of these rocks and carry it with them. Once completing the trail they place it on the other pile. Thus these rocks get carried back and forth along the trail by various hikers over the years. I selected my rock, and in a bold stroke of unoriginality I named it Wilson.
The rest of the day was uneventful. Wilson and I proceeded back down the way I came. I returned my day bag and reclaimed my pack (still no ranger around). Made camp for the night with my brand new tent, and prepared for tomorrow - the first day of proper AT hiking! Czytaj więcej

Day 2 - First real hiking day
5 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C
I've got some time now to update days I've skipped so far (day 10 at the time of writing)
Started our at Katahdin Stream Campground. Was in a bit of rush to get moving as I didn't want to encounter the ranger and have awkward questions asked about my permitless ascent yesterday. This was the first night I've slept in my new tent, it went pretty well.
Exiting the camping area, I signed the trail register, writing the month first and then the day (winces). Interestingly, there is another south-bounder that headed out just 2 hours previously. Must see if I can catch up with her. (Spoilers: I do not)
First thing I noticed setting out is my pack is waaaaay too heavy. Like, every single step my brain is trying to think of what to jettison. The first thing is my water. I'm used to hiking in Aus where the water sources are few and far between, so I'd set out with my usual 4 litres. But Maine is full of rivers and lakes, I don't need so much. So I poured out 3 litres. That helped the weight situation but more will need to done.
I hiked along and had almost exited Baxter State Park when I met a ranger. We chatted for a bit, he used to be a hiker and had been given the trail name Donald Duck (you will be hearing a lot about trail names). I was telling Donald my plans and what I'd done so far. He asked if I'd climbed with a permit, I said, like yeah, I mean, yeah, I totally signed something before the ascent. He wasn't buying it though, and I was thinking great, here I'm going to be fined just as I'm setting off. But he just had me fill out a permit application and said he'd take care of it. Good guy.
I stayed the night in Abol Bridge Campground and Store. In a little shed with some bunks in it. They have showers here so that was fantastic. A lot of people in campers with there American flags all out. I was told that you could get reception about a mile down the road, but I walked down there and couldn't get anything.
I bought a tin of ravioli, a jar of peanut butter, and a tube of Pringles to supplement my dinner. Pics of the area tomorrow as apparently that's when I took the photos.

Day 3 - I have my trail name!
6 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌫 21 °C
Started out from Abol Bridge Campground and Store. A great little place with plenty of hiker supplies available.
Tried to figure out the coins. They are not distinctive sizes like Australian ones, nor do they prominently display how much each one is worth. The dime does not even say how much it is worth other than a dime - like, ok, so much is that???? (10 cents according to the shop keeper).
Crossed paths with a northbound hiker named Tadpole, named as such because he used to be a competitive swimmer. We had the same sense of humour and were soon having a laugh over some nonsense. He asked if I had a trail name yet, and it was in the flow of laughing over silly things that he said "how about Kiwi? That will confuse people." We both thought this would be the funniest thing. And so I have my trail name.

17 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C
Heading out today from Shaw's at Monson. Just had bacon and egg croissant from the servo (gas station).
Really enjoyed the yurt style accommodation, it is just like a regular room.
Pack is now significantly lighter. Threw out a bunch of stuff and replaced some gear from Shaw's store. Am excited at the prospect of this increasing my kms (miles) per day and make ascending mountains easier.
Also purchased some Clif bars and a variety of packages meals/noodles. Going to test them out and see which ones work best for me. Czytaj więcej

Day 16 - Moxie Bald Mountain
19 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C
Just starting the day. Stayed last night at the Bald Mtn Pond Lean-to.
Lean-to was a bit tilted and made sleeping uncomfortable. Also full of mossies. Got up in the middle of the night and setup my tent to sleep there instead.
Just summited Moxie Bald Mountain. Met a hiker Papa Bear from Kentucky. I said, "Kentucky, nice" and he said no, it is full of racist arseholes and he can't wait to move out of the state. Haha.
Met another SOBO, Peachy. Named such because when asked how she was she replied "I'm peachy", so that became her name.
Staying the night at Pleasant Pond Lean-to. There is a group of about 10 boys out for a weekend camp, they kept yelling "the redcoats are coming". Another group of 3 hikers, and Peachy and her partner (no trail name yet). I set up my tent because too much lean in the lean-to.
Bonus photos of my dinner. I haven't decided on my trail food yet. Still experimenting. Czytaj więcej

Hauled arse yesterday. 20 miles done, best yet.
Stayed at Flagstaff Campsite. Arrived just as it was getting dark, used my headlamp for a bit to finish erecting tent. Couldn't find a flat spot so slept on a bit of a slant.
Had porridge (oatmeal) for brekkie (breakfast). It is nice but the whole process takes too long and I feel like I'm wasting daylight. Thinking of going back to cold trail food.
Currently on the top of Little Bigelow Mountain. Still have to climb Bigelow Avery Peak and Bigelow West Peak (pictured), which are much higher.
Update - Just summited Avery. Took a lot out of me. Rain forecast for tonight, not looking forward to it. Enjoy pics.
2nd Update - Just summited West Peak. The view is out of this world. This has to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Czytaj więcej

Day 24 - Day in the life of an AT hiker
27 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C
Stayed the night at Rangeley Saddleback Inn. Expensive and not worth it, but I was low on options.
Went to Rangeley Adventure Co to buy some gear. Mostly dry bags, as after 3 days of rain literally everything in my pack was wet. The guide book is getting mouldy. Also stocked up on food - noodles, protein bars and a dried beef lasagna mix that I thought I'd try.
Then took a shuttle back out to the trail ($15).
Staying tonight at Sabbath Day Pond Lean-to. When I arrived there were 4 guys in the lean-to and one tent setup. After some banter, the oldest one of the bunch began listing the diseases the occupants of the lean-to had (covid, malaria, ebola, the flu, etc). I gave an unconcerned nod and said I was relieved that there was nothing serious going about the camp then.
Even so I decided to sleep in my tent. Set it up on a platform, something I'd not done before. Used rocks and shoved sticks in the gaps to serve as anchor points. No idea if I'm doing this the correct way or not. At least it will hold if there isn't any wind.
Tonight I ate two packets of noodles as well as one of the leftover rolls. Looks like I'm finally getting an appetite on the trail. Czytaj więcej

Day 26 - Going to Andover
29 lip–3 sie 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C
Started out from Bemis Mtn Lean-to. Decided to pull off the trail into Andover today to resupply and wash/dry clothes.
Saw a wild turkey (?), I think. Hard to see in the photo I took (second photo). It is at the end of the fallen down log. Plus a picture of a frog.
Met the following hikers along the way:
Lady Slipper - Trail name is an orchid that only flowers under certain conditions, you have to be lucky to see it. Nobo flip-flop per, so I might run into her later. Immediately picked me as Australian after I'd said like 3 words.
Bear Chaser and Nimble Foot - Older couple. Nobos. They had seen a moose just half an hour before I'd met them! I kept my eyes peeled but I didn't see it! Talked about a lot of things, they said I was practically guaranteed to see bears in New Jersey. They said they had seen a lot.
Summited Old Blue Mountain. Not much to see from there. Path up was often blocked by fallen trees and the path down is very steep and wet. 3/10 mountain.
The comments on the hiking app for Old Blue Mountain are hilarious:
- this whole mountain literally sucks and I hate it
- NOBOs, this is the least technical big climb you've had in weeks. Smooth sailing. Fuck the haters.
- Ol Goofy Gooferton, that's what I'm going to call this mountain.
- Whoever says this climb nobo is easier than Mt. Moody is on drugs, this is 4 times as hard
- Pretty sure this mountain inspired the person who invented the stairmaster.
Made some arrangements to be shuttled and stay in Andover. Didn't really rain, was disappointed as I'd anticipated being drenched and then going into town for a hot shower and wash/dried clothes.
I had a Rodeo burger for dinner. There was confusion over what chips are. They said the burger comes with chips but I can pay extra to have fries. I said chips and received a 50 gram packet of Lays potato crisps. I mean, those are chips too but not the sort of chips I expect when you are ordering a burger and chips. Oh well, the things you learn. Had pizza the next day, it was underwhelming.

Day 28 - Andover to Hall Mtn Lean-to
31 lipca 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C
South Arm road (shuttle from Andover) to Hall Mtn Lean-to (bout 4 miles).
Wasn't going to post an update today but saw the Shawshank Redemption reference in the Lean-to and decided to share.
Today it was forecast to start raining about 2pm. I decided to hike to the closest shelter and hide from the rain there. It is now 2:45 and haven't had anything more than a thick fog. The weather reports have generally been unreliable. I'm losing half a day but better that then get caught in a downpour, I think.
Started out the day by purchasing fuel for my burner and myself. Yum. Then shuttle back to the AT.
I've got a bag of ramen noodles, Clif bars, and peanut + tortillas (for snacking). Still experimenting and haven't settled on what my standard trail food will be.
Getting over Moody Mountain was easy but ascending to the lean-to was harder than expected. I feel like all the rest from the day off was undone climbing that hill. Tomorrow is an easy first half of the day followed by a challenging climb, with a harder climb after that if I push it. Would like to make up some kms so I'll try to get as far as possible.
Update - 3:30 it is raining now. Glad I'm nice and dry inside the shelter! Czytaj więcej

Day 30 - An unexpected problem
2 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C
Hrrm. Broken pole. Almost at the summit of Baldpate Mountain East Peak.
My plan was to hike for the next couple of days over the mountains and pull off at Gorham. But it was going to be a tough slog due to weather. Having only one pole has made me realise how I've become accustomed to having 4 points of contact, using only one pole makes me feel like I'm "limping" somehow.
I can reach Maine 26 (a main road) today. Potentially get the pole repaired or replaced. But I don't think there is much civilisation around there. Will need to do some research.
Update - Talked to some other hikers (Tinkerbell and IMAM). They said there is as sweet gear shop in Bethel (reachable via Maine 26). Decision made. Going to Bethel.
Update 2 - Trail Magic!!! I met Maine Rune, he did a thru-hike in the 90s and now does easy sections here and there. He hands out apples and home-grown cucumbers to other hikers. I was dehydrated which made the cucumber taste amazing. He has also offered me a lift back to Bethel. Incredible. Czytaj więcej

Day 31 - Maine. It rocks.
3 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C
Decided to impulsively have a Zero (as in zero KMs travelled, there is also Nero which is when you cover some but almost no distance). At the recommendation of my host, I learned of the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum. It has a huge collection to rocks and history of mining in Maine, and also rocks from the Moon and Mars. You could call it Maine's main rock museum, a little Maine joke there.
First I went for a walk around town, they have a nice playground and walkway. A lot of joggers out and about. I browsed to local dollar store and bought some ramen noodles and oatmeal, also noted there is apparently demand for coffee that tastes like Snickers. The colourful building is the local theatre.
Proceeded to the rock museum. Incredible. Surprising for such a small town. Spent a long time inside browsing the displays, then was able to touch both a piece of the Moon and a piece of Mars (one finger touching). Then, surprisingly, I was allowed to hold both a piece of the Moon and Mars. Apparently this is the only place in the world the general public can do this. I hadn't planned on any of this, I'd only learned this place existed a few hours before. Quite amazing.
It was trippy holding Mars. I kept thinking of the improbable chain of events that needed to happen to allow for this. First a meteorite needs to smack Mars with enough force and at the right angle to cause a piece of it to fly right out into space, which is incredible in itself. Then that piece of rocks drifts through empty space for who knows how long. Then it has to have right direction and velocity to enter Earth's atmosphere, and at the correct angle to not be completely burned up. The rock needs to be found (this one was observed falling out of the sky). And then testing needs to be done on it, and somehow those tests will reveal it is from Mars. It seems so statistically unlikely but here it is. It kind of blows my mind.
Also today I ate the bread, cheese and salami I bought yesterday instead of eating out. Not on quite the same level as the Mars rocks but I thought I'd mention it.
Tomorrow I hit the trail again. I've organised a pickup with some other people from Bethel. Shuttle driver is named Rodney, very highly spoken of in the hiking app.

Finish: Bethel

PodróżnikSo cool Ash. Regarding your probability of touching Mars, the chances of you doing this trail and having a day off too. Insane. Did you consider swapping out the Mars rock with your trail rock? I'm sure they'd be cool with that

PodróżnikI totally could have. But the Mars rock was heavier and I didn't fancy carrying it down the trail.

Day 33 - Toughest stretch yet
5 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C
Such a low KM day. 3 things impacted this, my laziness in getting moving in the morning, the notch, rain this arvo.
For some reason just could not get moving this morning. Stayed in bed for so long, enjoying the feeling of being warm, dry and comfortable. Once I did get up it was then easy get ready and go for the day.
I did waste time on water though. According to my maps the only nearby water source was 1/3 of a mile back down the trail, so I went there and back to collect water for the day. An error in hindsight as there were small streams and such along the trail for the next couple of hours.
Today I understood a section of track referred to as the Notch. I'd been hearing about this for weeks, and yes, it is tough. Basically the Notch is a gully that runs between two mountains where very large boulders have fallen into over the years. Traversing the gully involves not only climbing over and around the boulders, but also going under them through short cave systems. Often you have to remove your pack in order to fit through, either pushing it in front of you or reaching back to drag it through. Climbing over and around the boulders is no easy feat either, often my limbs were stretched all the way out, holding onto a tiny ledge with two fingers while my foot blindly tries to find the next ledge. I have no idea how people shorter than me do it.
A lot of scraped knees later, I passed through. Felt like it took forever but was maybe 2 hours. One cool thing (literally) is I saw ice under the boulders that you might be able to just make out in the photos.
The rest of the day was a long uphill, very standard climb now. I was hoping to make it to the next Lean-to but just didn't have enough time. Plus it was forecast to rain in the afternoon, so I pulled into Full Goose Lean-to (no idea why it is called that).
It is interesting that the lean-tos have variations. This one does not have the beam running along the front, nor a metal roof. It is also the highest capacity lean-to that I've seen so far. It also has a low roof at the front that I kept banging my head on.
The other notable thing about this site is the huge number of tent platforms. 8 in total, including 2 high capacity ones. A truely ludicrous amount. Plus the ultra-high capacity lean-to. I don't think there is even enough people in the world to max this place out. If ever you need to evacuate a city, Full Goose Lean-to and Campsite is the place to relocate everyone.
Set up my tent and settled down for the day. The rain swept in a few hours later and is still going now about 6 hours later. A lot of flies came to visit me and are now trapped between the fly (heh) and the inner tent. Their constant buzzing is annoying but there is no easy way to remove them.
Going to try to get straight out of bed tomorrow morning!

Quick update. Stayed at Imp campsite last night. Getting better at setting up my tent on the platform. I bang my pegs in between the slats now, and use my rope to extend guy ropes that can't otherwise be anchored. Expect to be told off one day for damaging the platform or something.
Lots of wind last night. Had to get up to tighten down the fly multiple times.
Wanted to make it to highway 16 but won't make it. No campsite between here and there so I'll be stealth camping tonight.
Tomorrow going to take part of the day off at AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Centre as the next day I'll be tackling Mt Washington which is a hell of a climb.

Day 40 - Pinkham Notch
12 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C
Very windy last night. Rained for a little bit, that I was not expecting. Also very cold which made it all the more difficult to get out of my sleeping bag and get moving for the day.
Had a chat to the hiker Leaf that had camped near me. He recommended I use an app called AccuWeather instead of Google to get my weather reports. Had a look at it, Freemium, you need to pay a subscription for hourly precipitation forecasts, which is the bit I'm most interested in. I think I'll just keep using google for now.
Passed the ski lift, closed now until the snow season. I saw a big eagle/hawk but it was gone by the time I was ready to take a picture of it.
Went off the trail for a bit (accidentally). Crossed a stream, I thought I could make it by rock hopping but had to take my boots off and wade about halfway across. Then I came to the tunnel which was closed off, so after consulting my maps I went back across the stream (was easier jumping across the rocks from this direction, didn't have to deboot) and picked up the trail again. After a while I crossed the river again at the proper place - where there is a brand new bridge!
Called in at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Centre. Touched a beaver skin and a moose antler (I have yet to see either of these two animals!). There is a video feed from the top of Mt Washington, where I will hopefully be soon.
Staying at the Joe Dodge Lodge tonight. Had a buffet dinner - ate 2 rolls with pulled pork and 1 with chicken breast. Mac and cheese as well, as well as some other stuff.
Bonus picture of a chipmunk. Czytaj więcej

PodróżnikBob and I get Accuweather through the CARROT app (I have premium, he has Premium Ultra for the more specific notifications and data). Not sure if it’s cheaper but it is super cute, so I think it’s worth it, plus it seems more accurate than the free weather app. (CARROT is an evil robot who “controls” the weather and will sass you with every forecast)

PodróżnikCARROT Premium is $5 cheaper than Accuweather Premium, but CARROT Premium Ultra is $5 more than Accuweather Premium+. Can’t tell whether the features are different though.

Day 42 - The Presidental Range
14 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C
Can't believe it has been a week since my last update. Time flys.
This day I tackled the Presidentials, a range of mountains named after presidents. I'd "stealth" camped, very visibly, at the tree line at the start of the range. Great spot - trees blocked all the wind, no rain, no squirrels.
Starting up the first summit, Mt Madison, was the most challenging part of the day. Steep climb and high winds. Sometimes the gust would push me off balance and I'd stumble half a meter (about 3 feet) off to the side. Very challenging but very worth it.
I approached Madison Spring hut, it is built in a very beautiful and scenic location. These huts have been built along the White Mountains in response to the high numbers of people yoloing over them. The extreme popularity of this section of track has caused damage to the Alpine environment and something needed to be done to mitigate the impact. The huts hold about 50 people each and serve dinner and breakfasts. They are expensive to stay in, though thru hikers have a work-for-stay option where you wash up and scrub tables for 2 hours, in exchange you can eat the left overs and sleep on the floor.
I refilled my water at the hut, it is nice to just use a tap and not set up my filtering system. And also helped myself to the breakfast leftovers. The porridge was gross.
The other thing note at this point was that after summiting Madison, the trail became very easy. It is a highly trafficked tourist trail, even though it was a week day there were loads of people out on the trail. Including the Olympic ski team that were trail running to stay in shape.
There was also a lady having a panic due to fear of heights. Her family was helping her so there wasn't much I could do to assist.
About halfway along the range is Mt Washington. There is a rail line to the top which a coal powered train uses to bring hordes of tourists back and forth. The summit was once (and I assume still is) a meteorological station but has now been expanded into various tourist buildings. It is absolute bedlam up there, other hikers described it as a zoo. So many people bustling about. Not what I've become accustomed to these last few weeks.
George Washington has a great legacy and it is fitting that the mountain be named after him. However on this day it is accurate to say that I've topped even Washington!
Somewhere along the trail I'd met other hikers, Hayden and Mike (no trail names), and we started hiking as a group for protection against bears (joking). Mike shared a Whoppie Pie, an American snack, it is like cake.
We arrived at Mizpah Hut and Campsite ($5 fee for camping). It was absolutely awash with people, the camp maintainer, Erica, is a hero and was able to squeeze everyone in despite the overcrowding.
There has been so many more people on the trail recently. I think that word has gotten out that I am hiking the AT and now every man and his dog wants to do it. :)
Mike has kindly agreed to give me a lift into North Conway tomorrow. He lives in Maine and was just camping a day or two, so he is heading back. I gave Hayden my food bag to pick through as he was a little short on food for where he wanted to resupply at. Czytaj więcej

Day 43 - North Conway
15 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C
Today I'd started out with Mike from Mizpah Spring Hut and Campsite. Hayden was going to head out a bit later.
More bear propaganda on the trail. Still no actual bears.
Looking at the map we expected an easy and quick hike to the road but it was so much further and difficult than expected. Hiked over Mt Jackson and Mt Webster without issue, it was the descent to the road that was more difficult and felt way longer than the map indicated.
An older woman was on the track and having difficulty with some of the climbing. Mike helped her up at various sections.
We emerged a couple of miles from Mike's car, we should have taken a side path to reach it earlier. There was another hiker whom we had been chatting with on the trail, and Mike asked him for a lift down the road but he declined to help us. What a dick! Made it as awkward as possible for him as he was driving out of the carpark and we were just standing there in the rain.
After much discussion we decided to try hitch hiking, something neither of us had done before. Stood there with our thumbs out for 20 minutes trying to not look like serial killers before someone pulled over. Two gentlemen from Montreal kindly offered to help us. Such awesome lads!
Had lunch with Mike at the Sea Dog Brewing Company. Burger, fries (did not make the mistake of ordering "chips" this time!) and beer.
Mike dropped me off at the Yankee Clipper Moter Inn. The place was extremely recommended on the hiking app, and yes it was both cheap and high quality. Recommend it.
Due to the popularity of the bonus pictures, I've added one of another hikers puppy. Czytaj więcej

Day 49 - Leaving North Woodstock
21 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C
Quick update. Leaving North Woodstock after having a break at Inn 32.
8kms to the trailhead, just going to walk it.
I estimate 5 days to resupply at Hanover, but sections of it are going to be very challenging so I'm taking 7 days food to be safe.
Cold soaking was a success , so I'm leaving behind my cooking equipment to save weight. Was unsure of the pan because I've found that useful for other purposes, so keeping that for now.
Weather is overcast and drizzly for today and tomorrow. Should be fine but the reports are often inaccurate. I think because the mountains breakup and redirect the clouds a fair bit, making it different to predict and also creating different weather in the same local area.
Might not post until Hanover to save battery as I'm not certain how long I'll be on the trail. Czytaj więcej

PodróżnikWhat... What other purposes have you used the pan for? What nefarious deeds have you committed with a pan?

PodróżnikAll sorts of wickedry. Like, last night I had Chinese food, and in a moment of great daring, I used the pan to combine the lamb with the rice. Both chinese containers were completely full, so it would have been utter madness to try to combine the food otherwise. Also at the visitors centre at Mt Washington, I needed to refill my water but the sink was too high up to get the bottle under the tap. So, and get this, I filled the pan and then POURED the water into the bottle. I felt like Macgyver in that moment.

PodróżnikI just woke up and can't cope with your wanton disregard for tradition

Day 51 - Hiking app comments
23 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C
Didn't take much photos today - apologies!
Hiked from Eliza Brook Shelter to Beaver Pond. Goal was Beaver Brook Shelter with the stretch goal being Jeffers Brook Shelter. Stretch is not achievable due to the terrain being more time consuming than anticipated.
Slipped and fell today, taking a hard blow to my side, just below the ribs. No apparent damage or bruising (writing this 24 hours after). Still have a significant belly, so I think that helped cushion the impact! :) The White Mountains are really rough going, especially when wet. There was also a bog today, the log path was 25cm underwater with no option to go round - just had to slog through it and get my footwear drenched and dirty.
I hung out at Beaver Pond (no beavers, though the pond part is accurate) for a while. Had a convo with some guy who has stickers all over his car of all the breweries he has visited.
My goal was 2 miles away and started reading the comments about it, decided to call a shuttle and stay in town instead. Will hit the trail again tomorrow.
For the rest of this post - Enjoy the comments for Beaver Brook Shelter which persuaded me not to stay there:

If you're planning on tenting and relying on the tent platform... just an FYI it's *extremely* small. 2p tents need not apply.
Temporarily locked myself in the privy because the door is slightly off its hinges and really holds the interior lock in place. Used the rock inside to knock the lock pin out of the hole and free myself.
Logbook is full, how will anyone know I stopped here for lunch?!?!
What is this, a tent pad for ants?
This shelter smells like a sewage pipe and leaks in almost everyone who stays there.
If you love feces you are going to love this shelter. Full sensory museum of feces.
Who cares about the poop? No one is talking about how the shelter leaks!! If there is even a slight chance of rain I would not suggest staying here.
Smell at the shelter isn't as bad as some are saying, doesn't really smell like poo. It smells like a mouldering privy/like a barn.
Tent platform is stupidly tiny, I'm short and my feet hung off the end. Big pile of trash in the shelter.
Hobbit tent platform. My small tent hangs off both sides. Czytaj więcej

Day 52 - Mt Moosilauke
24 sierpnia 2024, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C
Traveled to Jeffers Brook Shelter today.
Hiked over Mt Moosilauke, the last of 4000 foot mountains in the Whites. The climb was tough but I was full of energy, so it went easily. The view at the top was absolutely astounding.
That is the majority of the hardest parts of the trail done (Katahdin , 100 Mile Wilderness, The White's, The Notch) .There are still high mountains to come but nothing I haven't tackled before.
At the shelter I met Devil Dog, Sparky, and Sneak Attack. We ended up hanging out for hours around the campfire. Sneak Attack performs trail magic down the trail at a Memorial chapel at Great Barrington, so I'm going to drop when I get there. Devil Dog is also a SOBO, so we will leave together tomorrow.
