    Sandymount - Allan‘s Beach Lookout

    I had arrived in Dunedin the previous day and really liked it! Especially the Otago Peninsula—countless scenic spots to take in the views and great opportunities for hikes. The drive there was beautiful as well!

    Though there was a moment when I found myself driving along a narrow cliffside road with no barriers on my side. And out of all possible oncoming vehicles, of course, it had to be a large bus. Amazingly, we both fit—but only after I edged as far left as I could to give the bus enough space to pass. As I drove on, I noticed a lot of gravel beneath my left rear wheel. From what I had seen earlier, one centimeter more, and my car would have gone slightly more vertical than comfortable. :D

    On the way to the lookout point, I was joined by an elderly Canadian couple, and we had a lovely chat. They advised me to drive to the next location rather than hike, as the trail was steep and sandy—far from an easy walk. But I thought: WWMD? (What would Maddie do?) And off I went.     Invercargill - Was it worth it?

    Yesterday, Maddie finally had enough of New Zealand, traveling, and… could it be me? All I know is that she’s flying home, though with a heavy heart. (Probably because she misses me—nothing to do with how stunning New Zealand is…) I think, at the time of writing this, she might still be flying. Thirty-eight hours on airplanes and in airports ain’t fun. It was a great time with her, and I shall miss her company.

    With a now much lighter car containing only my stuff, I drove for 2.5 hours from Queenstown to Invercargill. At my campsite, I asked the young lady at reception what she’d recommend I see in Invercargill. Well, she told me there wasn’t really anything to recommend since the place is rather unspectacular. Turns out, she was right.

    I went to Queens Park and had a look around. There was a small rose garden with some amusingly named roses, like Cutie Pie. I was interested in the winter garden, where I took a picture of half a boat filled with plants I thought looked cool. But as I was trying to figure out why there was, in fact, a boat on display, a lady told me that the winter garden was closed and that I should leave. I mean, it’s absolutely my fault—I foolishly assumed that a wide-open door meant you could walk in. Silly, really.

    I continued wandering and stumbled upon the most impressive waterfall yet!

    …See? If you’re frantically looking through the pictures right now, thinking you missed something—thanks for playing.

    I was amazed by quite the impressive display of huge pine cones, spotted some crocuses, and had a little photo shoot with ducks! Until one let me know it had enough. :D

    So, was it worth it? If you like a quiet life, sure. If you’ve just been skydiving and need another adrenaline kick, nah. ^^    Meer informatie

    Best Burger in the World?

    After hiking, we had another long drive ahead of us to get back to Queenstown, where we were looking forward to trying the “World’s Best Burger”—at least according to the LA Times.

    Fergburger was definitely a delicious burger. But I can’t agree with the LA Times on this one. There was room for improvement. The best burger I’ve had so far? That would still be the one from Fat Tui in Abel Tasman.

    I will concede, though, that Fergburger’s milkshake was, in fact, top-notch!    Meer informatie

    Hooker Valley Hiking

    Since we had such an early start with skydiving, we still had time for a 10 km hike in Hooker Valley (get it out of your system in the comments if you must. :D).

    Before we started the trail, we saw a sign stating that the risk of landslides and avalanches was low today. We had only hiked about 1 km when we suddenly heard a roaring, thunderous noise. A helicopter? Nope. A landslide. I just barely managed to catch the tail end of it on camera. From our safe distance, I can say: it was awesome to watch!

    Our hike culminated at Tasman Lake, which was cold enough to have floating sheets of ice!
    But apparently not cold enough to stop Maddie from trying to swim in it. She really gave it a go! She got in, and this time, only dogs could hear her obligatory “The water’s lovely!”    Meer informatie

    Free Falling in Twizel

    When we booked our slot for this, it seemed like a great idea. Minutes before, it still seemed like a great idea, but for some reason, my heart was beating a little faster than usual.

    At long last, we were called in to get fitted into our suits, hats, and goggles and received a short safety briefing. We met our instructors, whom we’d be strapped to, and got tetrised into our tiny biplane (four instructors and four participants). And off we went! I do love it when airplanes take off.

    It was a 15-minute flight, and I watched the other instructors quickly check all the straps, make adjustments, and go over everything one last time. Not mine. For whatever reason, he preferred to look out the window (the view was indeed amazing), but that made me just a little bit more nervous. Then the pilot said it was only going to be one more minute! Thankfully, my instructor finally made sure I was secured to him—and to the vital backpack he was wearing.

    The plane doors opened, and the first two teams jumped. Then it was our turn. I was basically dangling out of the airplane while my instructor was still sitting on the edge. Those five seconds felt a lot longer, but it was still okay.

    And suddenly, we were falling from 10,000 feet. My body wasn’t sure how to handle this for the first seven seconds. It was intense! Like when a rollercoaster goes straight down really fast—almost like that, just a lot higher up and with more at stake. :D The wind was deafeningly loud, and breathing got harder. But, as instructed, I kept my head up and my feet up (we were told our bodies should be in a banana shape for this part).

    After the first seven seconds, my body decided that it was, in fact, not in immediate danger of dying and relaxed a bit. The intense feeling from earlier subsided.

    Then there was a strong tug—the parachute had luckily deployed, and the noise from the wind almost stopped. We were now gently gliding through the air, but every time my instructor steered in either direction, there was an extra drop, and the rollercoaster feeling returned. It’s a great feeling! I was asked if I wanted to steer, and boy, did I! So much fun.

    My instructor took over again as we got closer to the ground (I hadn’t even noticed—that’s how much fun I was having). We prepared by lifting our legs so we could slide onto the grassy landing patch on our butts. It was a very soft landing for me (cookies are good for something!).

    My instructor did a great job—as he told me, he had already jumped more than 2,700 times. I almost felt silly for being that excited about my first jump, considering his experience. :D

    All in all: an awesome experience! I would absolutely do it again!

    As a reward for our first skydive overlooking Mount Cook and Lake Pukaki, we drove to a lavender field, where we had the most delicious vanilla-lavender-flavored ice cream! It was definitely one of the best ice creams I’ve ever had—just the right amount of lavender! Maybe we should have started with the ice cream to calm our nerves before the jump… but we did pretty well without it!    Meer informatie

    Lake Pukaki

    In the morning, we met up with Andrew one last time before his flight the next day. He even got me a present. I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up—it was a fridge magnet with the Scrabble letter V, the very letter that still tantalises me. :D Though now that I think about it, keeping that letter on the fridge might help with dieting. Now I just need it in sticker format for all the cupboards where the cookies are hidden…

    Maddie and I had big plans for the following day, so we needed to drive to Lake Pukaki, which offers a great view of Mount Cook. It also would have been an ideal spot for stargazing, but once again, the moon ruined our plans.

    When we arrived at the campsite, we had about 30 minutes until sunset. We raced to put on our swimwear and hop into the lake. It wasn’t as cold as we expected! It was indeed a short swim—once the sun set, it got rapidly colder, and we raced to warm up again.    Meer informatie

    Milford Sound

    When it was time for our 2-hour cruise, we had to hurry, completing a 30-minute walk in just 15 minutes to arrive at the terminal on time.

    The boat offered complimentary coffee and tea (though only black tea—what’s people’s problem with green tea? :D). Fortunately, Maddie had two packets of hot cocoa in her pocket, which we thoroughly enjoyed while the cold winds swept across the upper deck.

    Milford Sound is picture-perfect! The waterfalls are breathtaking, seagulls continuously accompanied us, and we were fortunate to spot seals lounging on some rocks.

    The last picture shows lines in the rocks—at that point, the glacier passed through the valley at a speed of 7 meters per day!

    Our return drive brought us back to Queenstown very late in the day.

    It was a lot of driving just to reach Milford Sound—approximately 4.5 hours each way within a 33-hour span. Admittedly, it’s a scenic drive, especially as the Sound comes into view. Plus, there’s a fantastic tunnel to drive through!    Meer informatie

    Waterfalls Along the Road

    Every time I think I can’t be impressed by another waterfall, I am proven wrong; they are all unique in their own way and worth seeing.

    We visited two waterfalls: Marian Falls (shown in pictures 1 and 2) and Christie Falls (picture 3). Afterward, we went to a lookout point with a great view. Just as we were about to leave, a tour bus arrived, and to our surprise, Andrew got out. So we walked back to catch up with him. It might have been the first time he didn’t reference my still-painful Scrabble loss. :DMeer informatie

    Cascade Creek

    Today, we spent most of the day driving from our campsite in Queenstown to our campsite in Cascade Creek, relatively close to Milford Sound.

    We took a lovely walk in Cascade Creek and stumbled upon a lake with a stunning mirror-like reflection of the mountains. A lucky moment indeed! Just seconds later, the rain started, the wind picked up, and the reflections became a thing of the past.

    We had to drive on anyway, as we had a few stops planned before our 3 PM cruise through Milford Sound.    Meer informatie

    That Wanaka Tree

    It was a bit of a slow start today—we experienced the coldest night in the tent yet (it dropped to 7°C), so we needed a while to get going. A blanket, a sleeping bag liner, and a sleeping bag, plus gloves, a scarf, and a hat, weren’t enough to keep me warm. Getting into short clothes in the still-freezing morning—just because it’s going to get hot later—was a bit of a struggle.

    Only a few minutes from our campsite, we visited the popular “That Wanaka Tree,” a tree that is supposed to grow in the water near the shore. When we got there, however, it wasn’t near the water at all—much of the lake had dried up. That didn’t stop a busload of tourists from blocking everyone’s view as they attempted to take pictures of the tree with a scenic background. Each person in the group walked up to the tree, touched it, and had their picture taken. That was baffling. It was the worst possible angle, and the sunlight would have made it impossible to make out their faces in the picture. But I guess: monkey see, monkey do.

    Later in the day, we drove on to Queenstown to our DOC campsite, where we had a great view and sketchy reception. :D    Meer informatie

    Thunder Creek Falls

    The last stop of the day was Thunder Creek Falls - a beautiful waterfall (I guess, all of them are).

    We drove on to the campsite, but spent the evening at Andrew's hostel where we made pizza and corn and played Bananagrams (not quite, but similar to Scrabble) where I also finally made up for the terrible loss of Scrabble from the previous night. :DMeer informatie

    Lake Matheson, 2nd attempt

    The first day with a bit of sunshine! We had almost forgotten what that felt like. It was still cloudy enough in the mountains to obscure a decent view of Lake Matheson, though.

    Maddie and I had checked out the lake two days ago, but all we could confirm was that there was a lake—it was far too rainy and foggy to see anything else. Lake Matheson is famous for its perfect mirror reflections under the right conditions. Today’s weather was arguably better, but the spectacular mountains remained hidden behind clouds, and a gentle yet disruptive breeze rippled the water.

    At one point, though, I managed to capture a picture of my reflection in the lake. ^^

    Much later that day, we arrived at our new campsite which had a Scrabble game. You didn't have to ask Andrew, Maddie and I twice to play. :)
    My gaming skills were off the charts. I was way ahead in points throughout the game. I just wasn't able to place one letter: V. V had 4 points. My score: 197. Andrew had caught up in points, but I wasn't worried.

    I should have been.

    While he "only" had 194 points, he was the first to finish and to inform us, that the points of unplayed letters would be subtracted from the total... Soooo. My now 193 points lost me a spectacular game. Ow, ow, oh, the pain. 😁🙈    Meer informatie

    Fox Glacier

    The third day in Fox Glacier. Maddie, Andrew (whom we met at the hostel in Picton), and I had planned to do the two-day Copland hike—first yesterday, then today. We postponed it to today because of the constant rain, hoping it would clear up. It didn’t. The weather looked just as bad, and two of us decided to call it. Maddie (you can probably guess) went for it anyway.

    For us, it was the right decision. We went on a 1.5-hour hike to get a glimpse of Fox Glacier and ended up absolutely soaked (apparently, “rainproof” doesn’t mean you won’t get drenched…). The nature was beautiful, I’m sure, but the rain kept us from seeing much. To make matters worse, thick clouds blocked the glacier, so the only proof of its existence was a tiny bluish-whitish patch—visible only with 240x zoom.

    Luckily, the hostel I stayed at for the night had a complimentary whirlpool, which warmed me up again.    Meer informatie

    Tatare Tunnels

    Our last stop of the day was the Tatare Tunnels. Originally constructed in 1897 to supply water for gold mining operations along the Waiho River, these 500-meter tunnels are now open for adventurous tourists to explore. The water inside was freezing! My feet did not enjoy that and needed plenty of breaks.

    Upon arriving at the campsite that night, I was absolutely tormented by mosquitoes. Now I face a choice: endure the relentless itching or use my mosquito burner and suffer its intense burning effects. Pickle, pickle…    Meer informatie

    Hokitika Gorge

    Hokitika Gorge has strikingly turquoise water due to the presence of glacial flour. Maddie considered going for a swim countless times. However, as another tourist pointed out, ‘blue’ usually means really cold! There were also warning signs advising against swimming. And sandflies! A combination of all these factors could convince her otherwise—though I’m sure not without a fair amount of regret.

    Just taking in our surroundings was rewarding enough. At least for me. ^^    Meer informatie

    Another Cave and Pancake Rocks

    A long day awaited us in rainy, foggy weather (of course, we didn’t manage everything we had planned—thankfully, I might add…). Our first stop was a cave near Pancake Rocks, and on our way there, we were entertained by two pretty good surfers. (Due to the mist in the air, taking good-quality pictures was quite tough.)

    The main attraction, Pancake Rocks, was only 200 meters further (we regretted not walking, as parking spaces were scarce). We walked the loop around the scenic landscape and thought, Why not have some pancakes while we’re here? Of course, there was a café selling them. Then we saw the price: 27.50 NZD for four stacked pancakes made with a ‘secret recipe’? Nope, we didn’t think so. Though I do wonder what ‘secret’ meant in this case.    Meer informatie

    Maruia Falls

    We had a rather late start to the day and enjoyed our campsite for quite a while. Then I heard it—bing, bing, bing. I peeked outside the kitchen to investigate. I engaged people in conversation and soon found the source—another avid Duolingo learner, Mira! What a coincidence—she was learning Spanish as well. Duolingo, it turns out, is a great icebreaker! We had a lovely chat with her, and I hope our paths will cross again.

    We had to move on, however, as we had a bit of a drive ahead of us. There was only one stop along the way: Maruia Falls. We were surprised to learn that they didn’t even exist until 1929, when the Murchison earthquake created the waterfall. Awesome! We were sure this area had been used as a quarry because it looked so even, but apparently not. ^^    Meer informatie

    Split Apple Rock

    We enjoyed a hot shower at the kayak rental. Once I was done, I went to the car and waited for Maddie. And waited. Just as I decided to go look for her, I saw her chatting with the rental staff and asked what the hold-up was.

    Turns out, they had locked her in the shower… :D

    Our last stop of the day: Split Apple Rock—though, depending on the angle, it might as well just be Apple Rock. We were about to leave the beach when we stumbled upon two surprise caves that were practically begging to be explored. So, we obliged.

    In one of them, we found a little prehistoric-looking crustacean—no idea what this guy is called.

    While hiking up the hill back to the car, I spotted the third little sticker of its kind. Still waiting for the culprit to come forward. :D    Meer informatie

    Lagoons, Seals and Starfish

    We made good use of the calm waters early in the morning and prepared to go past our original campsite, up Torrent River into the lagoons. The waters had been calm before, but in the lagoon, there was no movement at all—magical! It was incredibly scenic to gently paddle up Torrent River.

    We parked the kayak and hiked 10 minutes to Cleopatra’s Pool—a natural pool in a river with a natural slide! I passed up on the opportunity, feeling too cold just wading through the water to get there. ^^

    Look who’s peeking up to catch a glimpse of the happenings in the pool!

    The way back was long and not easy, with our aching hands and shoulders from the previous day. The waves picked up a bit towards the end again, but nothing compared to what we had experienced before. We stopped at Adele Island once more, this time on the rocky side, where we spotted seal pups! It was tough to take pictures from the constantly moving kayak, but maybe you can spot one of the little guys.

    Back on Fisherman Island, it was time for a swim—and look what we found! Starfish! Apparently, they were fruitful and multiplied, because I kept finding more and more! I wanted to keep going because I saw so many, but Maddie said no, we should head back to the rental place. Oh maaaan!    Meer informatie

    The Next Day: Te Pukatea Bay

    The next morning couldn’t have been much better: calm waters!! That was all we wanted.

    We also had countless Weka friends at our campsite. At first, we had encountered them on Rotoroa Island and marveled at the cute little birdies. Now, we kept shooing them away—they are quite crafty! We had been warned at the beginning of our kayaking tour not to leave anything unattended, or they would snatch it up and quickly wiggle off into the bush.

    We were also instructed to leave the tent zippers out of the birds’ reach, up high in the middle of the entrance. Otherwise, these intelligent and persistent little creatures might open the tent and invite themselves in. ^^    Meer informatie

    Stillwell Bay and “Type 2 Kind of Fun“

    Straight across from the beach at Adele Island, there was a beach with archways and coves on the mainland we wanted to see. Another 20 minutes of exploration and we went on to make it to our campsite, Anchorage. We didn’t. Suddenly, the weather changed without warning. A wall of dark clouds was hanging above us and broke shortly after. The wind picked up and the waves were getting higher. Soaked and slightly cold, we paddled to the next best shore, Watering Cove, for a short reprieve and to wait for the rain to pass. It didn’t. Watering Cove was the last beach on the mainland before a very exposed area called “The Mad Mile” – with a rough and rocky coastline that stretched on for longer than we thought. We decided to go for it and tried to set off. That’s when we realised this was gonna be difficult. As soon as we pushed the kayak into the water to get in, the waves crashed into it and left water in our cockpits before we could attach our spray skirts. We tried to pump it out, but at one point, we’d just have to live with a little water if we actually wanted to get a move on. If we managed to get through this, we would arrive at our campsite just beyond this rough patch, Anchorage. The aptly named “Mad Mile” made me question the decision to go on a kayaking tour and a few more things. :D

    The weather got worse: the rain was heavier; the wind grew even stronger; the waves were getting scarily high. It took us 1.5 hours to get through this stretch (in good weather the next day it was less than 40 minutes) and at this point, we were kind of paddling for our lives. A lot of the waves towered over us and soaked us (just in case the rain didn’t do a good enough job) and not only made our kayak shake violently but made the fear of capsizing all too real. All of that for 90 minutes. My body was in survival mode, and I even forgot to feel seasick. I was both surprised and encouraged to power through when I heard Maddie go “Whoo!” from the back seat every now and then. As she put it – even when things go bad, it’s important to keep morale high. (After our ordeal we compared notes: From what I gather, Maddie was just as scared as I was.)

    Suddenly, amidst the forever on-stretching rocks, we saw a faint beach in the distance, and when we found out that it indeed had a campsite – even though not the one we were supposed to go to – we set for it. Now the waves were behind us and made it a little easier to move forwards. However, that comes with a fair amount of danger as well. When kayaking, the most dangerous parts are the takeoff and landing. When you get close enough to the shore and high waves are breaking behind you, there is a decent chance you’ll not only get submerged by the waves in the kayak, but also spin around and land upside down. With the aforementioned spray skirts that are tightly attached to you and the kayak, this makes things more complicated. When bellying up, you need to keep your wits about you, fully submerged, to feel around the lines of the skirt, find the strap, pull it forth, and then back to get out of the kayak.

    We were in absolute luck, however. As soon as we got close enough to the shore, first two, then six people were sprinting towards us to hold the kayak steady so we could get out unscathed. We were incredibly grateful to them. We got out of our wet clothes and tried to get warm, yearning for a hot chocolate or any other hot drink. Unfortunately, there was no Woolworths in the wilderness… Our saviours, however, lent us their camping stove, so we were able to turn our cold salad into a hot stew. Yummy.

    Adele Island

    An hour later, we arrived at Adele Island - a bird sanctuary. We had our lunch there and encountered an adorable little bird! We‘re not quite sure what kind of bird it is, but the little fella followed us around and got really close. At one point he gave our refreshing isotonic drink a little side eye.     Fisherman Island

    Our first stop was Fisherman Island. It looks so tropical there! The water is pristine and has a gradient of 50 shades of turquoise. We had such fun watching little hermit crabs look for bigger shells and fight for them, looking at cool rocks (and collecting them) and finding awesome seashells. The sand there was so fine, and ranged from white to yellow/orange hues.Meer informatie

    2-Day Kayak Tour - Abel Tasman

    26–27 feb. 2025, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    I was wondering why Maddie was in such a hurry early in the morning as we were about to leave our campsite for the kayak rental—only a minute away. Turns out, we didn’t have to be there at 8:45 a.m. as I had assumed, but at 8:15 a.m.

    Well. That ain’t good.

    We were informed that we’d be on the later tour at 10:15 a.m. because we had missed too much of the instructions. But miraculously, since we’re both model students (please don’t interview any of my former teachers, thank you), we were allowed to join our originally planned tour.

    The instructor read us the weather forecast for the next two days and commented, “I’d love to rip this up and throw it away, but legally, I have to read this to you.”

    What he read to us sounded great, though—perfect conditions for a two-day kayak trip. Sunshine, calm water, hardly any wind.
