Ein Moment, für die Ewigkeit bestimmt 🔆

Und dann war er auf einmal da. Der Moment, auf den ich mich schon so lange gefreut habe. Ein Moment, der mir schon seit 3 Jahren immer wieder Gänsehaut bescherte: Der erste Mathe-Test auf hoher See 🌊
Die Schüler*innen hatten 3-Minuten Zeit (s. Foto) und nur wenige konnten ihn bestehen. Ein Traum wurde wahr 📝
Danach ging es dann aber erst richtig los. Wir schauten uns an, wie man die Steigung einer Brücke, über die wir vor wenigen Tagen liefen, berechnen kann und welchen Sinn und Zweck das Erlangen von Wissen über lineare Funktionen für unseren Alltag hat. Im Anschluss daran beschäftigten sich die Schüler*innen damit, wo sie lineare Zusammenhänge an Bord ausmachen konnten und ermittelten entsprechend sowohl die Steigung, die zugrundeliegende Funktionsvorschrift und stellten das Ganze graphisch dar 📈
In der Selbstlernzeit konnten die Schüler*innen dann weitere vertiefende Aufgaben zur Thematik bearbeiten. Da lineare Funktionen meist in Klasse 7/8 behandelt werden, war es für die meisten eine dankbare Wiederholung 🔄
Und dann war er auf einmal tatsächlich da. Der Moment, auf den ich mich dann wirklich schon so lange gefreut habe. Ein Moment, der mir in der Tat schon seit 3 Jahren immer wieder Gänsehaut bescherte: Der erste Sprung ins kühle Nass 🌊
Es läutete. Wir kamen alle bei strahlendem Sonnenschein etwa 2 1/2h nach Ablegen auf dem Maindeck zusammen. Ich sah Marie (Crew) aus dem Wheelhaus kommen und mir war direkt klar: irgendetwas ist anders. Sie versuchte sich nichts anmerken zu lassen, aber nach einem Monat an Bord entwickelt man bei einigen Menschen ein besonderes Feingespür. Es sollte etwas großartiges passieren 💯
Gedanklich war ich schon in meiner Cabin bei meiner Badehose, als es von ihr hieß: "Hättet ihr Bock zu schwimmen?" 🏊🏽
Ich meine, im ernst, das lässt man sich doch nicht zweimal fragen - zack, ab in die Cabin - umziehen - und an Deck auf das 'Go' warten 🚏
Heiß wie Frittenfett und mit den Hufen scharrend warteten wir darauf, dass sich die Tür an 'Portside' (Backbord) öffnete und die Leiter eingehängt wurde 🪜
"Ihr wollt doch nicht einfach so ins Wasser gehen, oder? Ab zum Netz und reinspringen!" - ein Ausruf, der gleichwohl Teenagern zwischen 15-17 Jahren wie Lehrkräften vom Ocean College das Herz höher schlagen lässt 🫀
Ich denke, den ersten Schwimmstopp im tiefblauen Meer wird man niemals vergessen. Der Gedanke, dass man dort schwimmen geht, wo sehr wahrscheinlich noch nie jemand zuvor geschwommen hat, bewirkte sowohl bei den Schüler*innen als auch Lehrkräften ein Gefühl von Ehrfurcht und Dankbarkeit 💐
Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Es war ungefähr noch cooler und aufregender als ich es mir ohnehin schon in all der Zeit vorher ausgemalt hatte 🙏🏽
Die Schwimmstopps während der Atlantiküberquerung werden es aber wahrscheinlich nochmal toppen 🗺️
Achja und danach gab es dann für die Nachmittagsklasse auch noch ein bisschen Mathe, und dass, obwohl ich im Wasser, als Marie (SuS) mich - neben mir schwimmend - fragte, was wir in Mathe machen werden, "Schwimmen" entgegnete 🤯
Am Ende des Tages wurde dann noch eine Kurzevaluation in Form eines Fragebogens an die Schüler*innen ausgehändigt, in dem sie die letzten 4 Wochen (wir sind jetzt schon einen Monat an Bord 😦) reflektieren konnten und uns ihre Meinung widerspiegeln sollten 📝
Das Ganze habe ich abends im Messroom noch ausgewertet und stelle es dann bei nächster Gelegenheit den Schüler*innen sowie der Crew vor 📢

A moment destined for eternity 🔆

And then it was suddenly there. The moment I had been looking forward to for so long. A moment that had been giving me goosebumps for 3 years: the first math test on the high seas 🌊
The students had 3 minutes (see photo) and only a few were able to pass. A dream come true 📝
After that, things really got going. We looked at how to calculate the gradient of a bridge that we walked across a few days ago and the purpose of learning about linear functions in our everyday lives. The students then looked at where they could identify linear relationships on board and determined both the gradient and the underlying functional equation and represented the whole thing graphically 📈
During the independent learning time, the pupils were then able to work on further in-depth tasks on the topic. As linear functions are usually dealt with in Year 7/8, it was a rewarding repetition for most of them 🔄
And then, all of a sudden, it was actually there. The moment I had really been looking forward to for so long. A moment that has actually been giving me goosebumps for 3 years now: the first jump into the cool water 🌊
The bell rang. We all gathered on the main deck in bright sunshine about 2 1/2 hours after casting off. I saw Marie (crew) coming out of the wheelhouse and it was immediately clear to me that something was different. She tried not to let it show, but after a month on board you develop a special sensitivity with some people. Something great was about to happen 💯
I was already thinking about my swimming trunks in my cabin when she said: "Would you like to go for a swim?" 🏊🏽
I mean, seriously, you don't need to be asked that twice - off to the cabin - get changed - and wait on deck for the 'go' 🚏
Hot as chips and hoofing it, we waited for the portside door to open and the ladder to be hooked in 🪜
"You don't want to go into the water just like that, do you? Off to the net and jump in!" - an exclamation that makes the hearts of teenagers aged 15-17 and Ocean College teachers alike beat faster 🫀
I don't think you'll ever forget your first swim in the deep blue sea. The thought of swimming where probably no one had ever swum before gave both students and teachers a feeling of awe and gratitude 💐
Long story short: it was even cooler and more exciting than I had already imagined in all the time beforehand 🙏🏽
But the swimming stops during the Atlantic crossing will probably top it again 🗺️
Oh yes, and then there was also a bit of math for the afternoon class, although when Marie (SuS) asked me in the water - swimming next to me - what we were going to do in math, I replied "swimming" 🤯
At the end of the day, the students were given a short evaluation in the form of a questionnaire in which they could reflect on the last 4 weeks (we've been on board for a month now 😦) and give us their opinion 📝
I evaluated the whole thing in the Messroom in the evening and will present it to the students and crew at the next opportunity 📢
