ExpiTage 4 & 5: San José ➡️ Puerto Viejo

Nach einem sehr facettenreichen Frühstück mit Toast, Curry und allerlei Resten, die sich in den letzten Tagen angesammelt hatten, ging es mit zwei bestellten Uber an diesem Morgen Richtung Busstation. Dort angekommen versuchten wir um 11:40 Uhr noch Tickets für den Bus Richtung Puerto Viejo (Abfahrt: 12:00 Uhr) zu ergattern. Leider waren keine Sitzplätze mehr für die etwa 4 1/2 h Fahrt verfügbar, sodass wir auf 'Stehplätze' ausweichen mussten. Wir teilten uns also auf und belegten jeweils die beiden hinteren Ausgänge des Busses. Einige von uns passten dabei auf die unterste Stufe der Treppe, wobei andere den gesamten Mittelgang zur Schlafmöglichkeit umfunktionierten. Nach einer relativ ereignisarmen Fahrt kamen wir gegen 16:30 Uhr an unserem Ziel Puerto Viejo an. Von dort ging es zu Fuß 25 Minuten zu unserem Airbnb. Das Airbnb lag in einem Neubaugebiet und war nur über eine Schotterstraße zu erreichen. An unserem Ferienappartment angekommen, wurde schnell eine Zimmeraufteilung vorgenommen und im Anschluss in den angrenzenden Pool gesprungen, den wir uns offiziell mit den anderen drei Appartements teilten. Nach dieser Erfrischung wurde das Abendessen zubereitet: Nudeln mit Tomatensoße 🍝 Währenddessen saßen Marie und ich noch am Beckenrand des Pools mit den Beinen im Wasser und sprachen über die letzten 3 Monate. Kurz nach dem gemeinsamen Abendessen bekamen wir Besuch von Anna, Malte und Leonore, die mit ihrer ExpiGruppe ebenfalls bereits in Puerto Viejo waren. Ella, Tilly, Felipa und Jana nutzten die Zeit, um sich mit einer weiteren ExpiGruppe, die ebenfalls bereits vor Ort waren, zu treffen. Nachdem unser Besuch den Rückweg angetreten hatte, sprach ich mit Marie noch über allerlei Dinge, wie z. B. ihren anstehenden Geburtstag sowie Familienverhältnisse und Zukunftsvisionen. Gegen 00:00 Uhr fielen dann alle geschafft vom Tag in die wirklich bequemen Betten 🛌🏽

Sonntag, 26.01.25
Spontanes Ausschlafen. Dieser Tag wurde entgegen der Absprache, um 08 Uhr gemeinsam zu frühstücken, spontan zum Ausschlafen genutzt. Zwischen 10-11 Uhr erwachten dann alle aus ihrem Dornröschenschlaf und frühstückten zusammen die Reste in Form von Toast und Nudeln vom Vortag. Eigentlich wollten wir gegen 11 Uhr gemeinsam zum Cahuita Nationalpark aufbrechen. Ein andauernder Regen durchkreuzte allerdings unsere Pläne, weshalb wir uns auf free-shore-leave Zeit einigten und jeder - in Gruppen - Puerto Viejo auf eigene Faust erkunden konnte. Ich beschloss in der Zeit alleine den Cahuita Nationalpark zu besuchen und rüstete mich dazu mit passender Regenbekleidung aus. Am Cahuita Nationalpark angekommen, bestand der Eintrittspreis aus einer freiwilligen Spende für die Erhaltung des Parks. Mein Plan war, die gesamte Schleife bis zum nächsten Parkein- bzw. -ausgang zu gehen. Nach etwa 1 h wundervoller - und matschiger - Wanderwege kam mir dann ein Parkmitarbeiter entgegen und sagt mir, dass aufgrund der Regenfälle der zweite Ausgang bereits geschlossen hatte. So ging es also den gleichen Weg wieder zurück 🚶🏽
Auf dem Rückweg lief ich dann direkt Lea - einer Lehrerin von der Johnny - in die Arme und lernte so auch direkt unsere nächste Bordmedizinerin Nicola (ihre Schwester) und den nächsten Bordmediziner der Johnny, Yannick, kennen. Am Parkeingang angekommen holten wir uns alle ein Eis und gingen zusammen zur Busstation. Ich nahm dort den Bus zurück nach Puerto Viejo und stieg direkt im Ortskern aus. Dort nutzte ich die Zeit für eine Ortsbegehung, wobei ich am anliegenden Strand dann Marie, Antonio und Christian entdeckte. Im Anschluss schlenderten wir zusammen durch die Straßen und Shops, kauften zuletzt noch Snacks für den morgigen Tag und holten auch noch Dollar für Kuba ab. Da wir uns um 20:30 Uhr zu einem gemeinsamen Expi-internen Abendessen verabredet hatten, fuhren wir kurz vorher noch mit einem TukTuk zur Wohnung zurück und machten uns 'frisch' 🛺
Pünktlich um 20:30 Uhr trafen wir im Restaurant 'Amimodo' ein und suchten uns einen wundervollen Platz unter einem strohbedeckten Pavillon aus. In einem wundervollen Ambiente, ganz nah am Strand, ließen wir die ExpiTage noch einmal Revue passieren und hatten so einen fantastischen Abschluss dieser intensiven Tage. Um 22:45 Uhr verließen wir das Restaurant und suchten uns noch eine Strandbar, in der wir noch einige Runden Karten spielten und den Abend gemütlich ausklingen ließen - das war zumindest bis hierhin der Plan. Nach Rückkehr in unser Airbnb beschlossen wir noch ein letztes Mal in den Pool zu springen und eine kleine Poolparty zu veranstalten. Ella und Felipa führten einen kleinen Tanz zum Song 'Dancing Queen' auf und verwandelten den Pool im Anschluss in ein Theater. Nach etlichen Lachanfällen aller Beteiligten ging es dann gegen halb 2 ins Bett - vor uns lagen dann noch etwa 4 1/2 h Schlaf, bis gegen 06:15 Uhr wieder der Wecker klingeln sollte. Denn unsere ExpiChallenge war noch nicht geschafft: Wir sollten spätestens um 10:00 Uhr in Sixaola sein - am Grenzübergang zu Panama 🚗

After a very varied breakfast with toast, curry and all sorts of leftovers that had accumulated over the last few days, we headed for the bus station with two Ubers we had ordered that morning. Once there, we tried to get tickets for the bus to Puerto Viejo (departure: 12:00) at 11:40. Unfortunately, there were no more seats available for the 4 1/2 hour journey, so we had to switch to 'standing room'. So we split up and took the two rear exits of the bus. Some of us fitted on the bottom step of the stairs, while others converted the entire middle aisle into a place to sleep. After a relatively uneventful journey, we arrived at our destination of Puerto Viejo at around 4:30 pm. From there, it was a 25-minute walk to our Airbnb. The Airbnb was located in a new development and could only be reached via a gravel road. Once we arrived at our vacation apartment, we quickly divided up the rooms and then jumped into the adjacent pool, which we officially shared with the other three apartments. After this refreshment, dinner was prepared: Pasta with tomato sauce 🍝
Meanwhile, Marie and I sat at the edge of the pool with our legs in the water and talked about the last three months. Shortly after dinner together, we were visited by Anna, Malte and Leonore, who were also already in Puerto Viejo with their expi group. Ella, Tilly, Felipa and Jana used the time to meet up with another Expi group who were also already there. After our visit had made its way back, I talked to Marie about all sorts of things, such as her upcoming birthday, family relationships and visions for the future. At around 00:00, everyone was exhausted from the day and fell into the really comfortable beds 🛌🏽

Spontaneous sleep in. Contrary to the agreement to have breakfast together at 8 a.m., this day was spontaneously used to sleep in. Between 10-11am, everyone woke up from their slumber and had breakfast together with the leftovers in the form of toast and pasta from the previous day. We had actually planned to set off together for Cahuita National Park at around 11am. However, persistent rain thwarted our plans, which is why we agreed on free-shore-leave time and everyone - in groups - was able to explore Puerto Viejo on their own. I decided to visit Cahuita National Park on my own during this time and equipped myself with suitable rainwear. When I arrived at Cahuita National Park, the entrance fee was a voluntary donation for the preservation of the park. My plan was to walk the entire loop to the next park entrance/exit. After about 1 hour of wonderful - and muddy - hiking trails, a park employee approached me and told me that the second exit was already closed due to the rain. So I went back the same way 🚶🏽
On the way back, I ran straight into Lea - a teacher from the Johnny - and got to know our next on-board doctor Nicola (her sister) and the next on-board doctor from the Johnny, Yannick. When we arrived at the park entrance, we all got an ice cream and walked to the bus station together. I took the bus back to Puerto Viejo and got off right in the town center. I used the time there to explore the town and discovered Marie, Antonio and Christian on the adjacent beach. Afterwards, we strolled through the streets and stores together, bought some snacks for tomorrow and picked up some dollars for Cuba. As we had arranged to have dinner together at 8:30 pm, we took a tuk-tuk back to the apartment shortly beforehand and 'freshened up' 🛺
We arrived at the 'Amimodo' restaurant on time at 8:30 pm and chose a wonderful spot under a thatched pavilion. In a wonderful ambience, very close to the beach, we reviewed the ExpiTage once again and had a fantastic end to these intensive days. We left the restaurant at 10:45 p.m. and found a beach bar where we played a few more rounds of cards and ended the evening in a relaxed atmosphere - at least that was the plan up to this point. After returning to our Airbnb, we decided to jump into the pool one last time and have a little pool party. Ella and Felipa performed a little dance to the song 'Dancing Queen' and then turned the pool into a theater. After several fits of laughter from everyone involved, we went to bed at half past one - we still had about 4 1/2 hours of sleep ahead of us until the alarm clock rang again at around 06:15. Because our ExpiChallenge wasn't over yet: we had to be in Sixaola by 10:00 at the latest - at the border crossing to Panama 🚗
