    Bajamar beckons

    Donny & I have been hanging out in Bajamar, a great little off-the-beaten path community about 30mins north of Ensenada and a little over an hour south of the border.

    Every day we see *at least* 3 groups of whales migrating through (those poor pregnant cows… imagine running (or even walking) an ultramarathon on your last month of pregnancy?!) and most days a pod of dolphins cruising around.

    The people here are super friendly and we’ve found an AMAZING roadside gourmet fish taco joint run by a great local couple (he used to cook in hotels all over Mexico so we’re talking crazy good food) with unbeatable views. Today, my tastebuds were wowed by a marlin chile relleno taco while being entertained by the local pot-bellied pig taking her daily constitutional nearby. 🥰

    California ... here we come

    Medford to just where just south of Stockton (apparently one of the most dangerous cities in America). Left at the crack of dawn, made good time to California!! Saw mount Shasta which was glorious, and ended up in a parking lot behind Carls Jr burger shack for the night together with the "Krystal Ship". Awesome!!Читать далее

    Day 4 … made it down to Oceanside .. just north of San Diego. It was a pretty boring trip down, lots of nothingness and very sad MASSIVE cattle harvesting operations, I think I am going to go off meat after this trip. We are “glamping” tonight at Oceanside RV park 😂. Anyway, tomorrow it’s the border crossing and then the big meet up with Caroline and Donny in Ensenada 🎉😆Читать далее

    We had a pleasant night in our RV resort and headed down to the border crossing. We were pleasantly surprised at how little traffic there was and we made it through in record time. The landscape changed dramatically and we took the toll road to Baja Mar to meet up with Donnie and Caroline. We took our bikes for a ride and got into trouble with the resort, apparently they don’t like people popping wheelies in their golfing resort 😂.     So we left a little late today, really wanted to reach San Quinten before sunset and we arrived just as the sun was setting … oh well. It was an interesting and beautiful drive from Ensenada.

    I heard about this quaint little town when crossing from the west coast to the east coast that had an amazing mission on the town square and that you could also camp overnight on the square … so we had to do this. What a blast. We arrived and parked right in front of the Mission and went to grab some food. While we sat there there were kids playing football in the street in front of us, the town raccoon weaved it’s way between our feet and everyone was just so friendly. I was having a FaceTime call with Tracey and and a kid sat next to me and started talking to Tracey … so cute. Later that night the police came to visit and I though “oh no, they are going to ask us to move” but instead we they were concerned that since Shauns car was parked in the “wrong” direction it would confuse cars entering the square and asked him to just turn his car around … wow!! The next morning we saw a guy taking his horse for a run 🤣🤣 Anyway, such a lovely experience!Читать далее

    Across the border and beyond

    As I write this we are sitting in front of a campfire in the visually stunning area outside of Cataviña, Baja California Norte, Mexico.
    It’s been about three weeks since Caroline and I crossed the border for the first time. We have been back through the borders twice since then so are pros now.

    We spent the first two weeks at a golf resort called Bajamar which is located between Tijuana and Ensenada. Lovely place to start our Mexico adventure. Played a few rounds of golf, did a lot of tinkering on the truck and camping STUFF. Lots of runs to Costco, Walmart and Home Depot. There were whale and large dolphin pod sightings daily.

    After leaving the condominium comforts of Bajamar, our first “off grid” destination was a nature preserve on the Pacific coast, about 30 min drive west of the town of San Quintín. Fabulous beach with lots of Pismo clams, stunning sunsets, and dolphins and seals playing in the waves. GREAT long and flat beach for walking and running.

    From there, we headed South about 3 hours on Carretera 1 to the little town of Cataviña. I want to tell you all that I’m not a good passenger in a car “ever”! But I know Caroline has been so patient with me throughout our travels. So she took the wheel. Yikes, she did an amazing job but my heart was in my mouth on this narrow 2-way “not an inch of room for error” stretch of road. With 18 wheelers coming at us with gusto. Not to mention all the crucifixes on the roadside. P.S. Hector RIP.

    While we had grand plans of camping in the desert upon arrival, the charming little hotel was just too inviting. We all checked in, then Derick and Shaun went off-road on their motorbikes and we went off-roading in the truck. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Massive sandstone boulders only to be matched by the gigantic Saguaro cactus and all the other crazy thorny plants that grow in this part of the world.

    We only planned to stay 1 night, but we were enjoying ourselves too much (plus having a “real” bed and shower was too nice) that we extended our stay for another night. We tried both the hotel restaurant (great spicy margaritas!) and the little roadside joint across the highway…while the restaurant was good, everyone loved the home-cooking from the little place across the road. Especially their salsa caliente! 🔥🔥

    Today we parted ways—the boys went south and we went in search of the ideal desert campsite. After at least 2 hours, we found a great spot away from it all, but not so far to worry if anything went wrong. Set up camp, befriended the local rook (pistachios!) and scavenged firewood. We’ve finished up our burrito bowls and kicked back in our chairs in front of a fire of cactus wood and a beautiful night sky. Ain’t life grand.    Читать далее

    Thanks Facebook Baja Overland group for suggesting this beach. Quick stop for lunch … best quesadilla ever … wow. The water so shallow it feels like you can walk forever. This place charges $10 but if you tell them you are only going to the restaurant they won’t charge you. Definitely going to overnight on the way back.Читать далее

    We decided to spend the night on the beach just outside of La Paz based on a recommendation from a fellow traveler we met in San Ignacio. The camp spot was perfect, beautiful sunset … however we awoke to a raging wind / stand storm at midnight. It was a steady 20 mph gusting up to 35 mph. It whipped up so much sand that Shaun had to wear his motorcycle goggles in his tent 😂. Needless to say, we did not get much sleep that night. We decided To skip making breakfast since the wind was still blowing 15 mph and headed to La Paz. La Paz has a lovely water front and almost no resorts which I really like. They say this is what Cabo used to be like 20 years ago … very nice. The breakfast sandwich was delish! Onward to Los BarrilesЧитать далее

    We did some serious riding yesterday. Went up and along the rim of an extinct volcano … right up to the edge, quite terrifying. Our road turned into a dirt bicycle track and was really tough. We rode our bikes onto the beach and went for brunch and watched the kite surfers. Inquired about taking lessons and it was $800 so a big nope to that. Got back on the bikes again and did another grueling couple of hours of single track … but I was fun. I also threw in some pictures of our el cheapo Mexican resort which I have become attached too 🙂Читать далее

    Picked a random spot where iOverlander said was a good camping spot. Took some rough roads to get here but oh boy was it worth it. Found a cool shady camp spot … no wind and blazing hot. Went for a swim in the river and found the hot springs. Met some really cool couples and we may run into them again. In the morning I decided to go soak myself in the hot concrete tubs where the hot springs originate and watch the sunrise … what a treat.Читать далее

    A nice walk around the bay of dreams

    We decided to take a nice long walk. We followed a coastal path until we reached the end where there was an enormous house sitting at the end of a pristine white road. We followed the road back for a few miles and ended up at a security gate and had to explain why we’re on the other side of the gate 🙂. Turns out it was a failed developer venture and all that’s left is the road and the restaurant … just as well as this beautiful beach would most likely have been ruined.Читать далее
