Our final day in Europe. Tomorrow it's a 3 a.m. start for the airport and 26 hours of travel back to Bend. Finally found an IPA (pronounced "ee-pah" here).

Had a wonderful and thorough tour of this beautiful city led by Caput Regni Tours manager and guide, Markéta Hradecká. Really well done.Читать далее

    Beer, Again

    2 июня 2018 г., Чехия ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We're enroute to Prague and our driver happened to know about a little brewery on the way.

In the town of Pilsner is home to Pilsner Urquel, a beer now colloquially referred to as Pils. It's one of the most recognized lager beers. And for good reason; it's a great lager beer.Читать далее

    30 мая 2018 г., Германия ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

At Johann Anetseder farm Christian Anetseder has transformed his working farm into a bit of Bavarian heaven. Here he hosts equine competitions, harvests trees and mills lumber, hosts weddings, parties and tourists.

We enjoyed a tour of the grounds then tapped a couple kegs of beer for a rousing party.

    Country Number Six

    24 мая 2018 г., Венгрия ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We bid a fond farewell to our guide and touring companions last night at a dinner that included Slovenian foods and cultural music and dancing.

Today our driver from Mydaytrip.com met us at our Ljubljana hotel and we were quickly and comfortably off to Budapest, a 4.5 hour drive. We can highly recommend this means of travel within Europe. Our alternative was to fly to London then to Budapest, a 6 hour trip with layover, at more than twice the cost of the car journey or try to figure out a route by train lugging our suitcases along. And they stop for tours along the way!

We strolled the pedestrian only zone near our Budapest hotel, avoiding the hectic traffic of the city, and enjoyed Hungarian cuisine at a nearby restaurant before returning to our room. It overlooks the Danube river and has great views of historic buildings and the lovely bridges that connect Buda and Pest areas of the city.

    Tongue Twisted in Slovenia

    21 мая 2018 г., Словения ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After the fast pace and noise (Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and motorcycles all with extra loud engines that young drivers delight in driving fast and loud) of Opatija a stroll in the pedestrians only old town area of Ljubljana was a delight.

This city, in the Republic of Slovenia, our 5th country visited since May 1, is a real gem. Life moves at a relaxing pace with locals and visitors alike, most with smiles om their faces, strolling about the shops and historic sites.

We took a short guided tour of town then boarded a small river boat for a 45 minute cruise on the Ljubljananica River Canal.

The city is immaculate, environmentally green conscientious and has a strong and vibrant economy. It is an amazing place with amazing people justifiably proud of their city and country. It rivals any other city we have visited in Europe for charm and wsrmth and all should consider a visit before it gets "discovered ".

    Train Ride in a Cave

    21 мая 2018 г., Словения ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we left Coatia for the last time on this trip and entered Slovenia. Our first destination was Postojna Caves.

An electric train took us 3 miles into the cave where we disembarked and walked amoung amazing caverns and geologic formations.

During WW II, German forces stored aircraft fuel inside the cave. Partisans blew up the fuel depot and it burned fpr 7 days. Formations near the depot are still blackened by the smoke.

What an amazing contrast to our earlier stops! A, seaside resort and haven for royalty since the 19 th century the area reeks of money and high class.

Most of our tour group breaded out on an optional tour. Barb and I opted to takes the day oon or LeAnn and remained in town.

    Karanac, Croatia

    16 мая 2018 г., Хорватия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

From mountains and rolling hills we transitioned to the fertile plains of northeastern Croatia. The verdent countryside filled with acres and acres of feed corn, sugar beets, potatoes, wheat and much more are broken by quaint, small villages and welcoming people.

We were welcomed to a working farm with bed and breakfast style accommodations. Seems everywhere we go here we are greeted with trays filled with shots of home made plum brandy; strong stuff! Freshly made donuts filled with homemade strawberry jam were part of a very warm welcome as well

We assisted in the making of soft cheese to be served with our breakfast tomorrow before heading out for another dinner hosted by a local family. Great food, more plum brandy and fellowship. All slept well inspite of, our perhaps because of, all the farm sounds.

After a hearty breakfast we participated in a pottery making class presented by a local artisan. Later we walked about the village and stopped briefly to help a local chef prep food, a local special stew (Cobanac)with Hungarian paprika, onions, beef and lamb and "secret ingredients " (Hungary's influence is strong here due to proximity)for our lunch. Then we were off to a winery to taste wines made from locally grown grapes.

The winery looked like a California estate transplanted into this rural village. The wines we tasted were suprisingly good and very inexpensive. We bought a bottle for ourselves and the wine maker's family sent us off with three to share with lunch. Lunch was fantastic! In spite of walking 3-5 miles a,day I'm certaim we are gaining weight. I personally think we're on a Hobit diet: breakfast followed by second breakfast 2 hours later then 2 hours later, eleveses, the lunch with afternoon tea, dinner and supper. And always plum brandy (Slibowitz) and "živjeli!" Croatian toast.

After lunch we departed for Zagreb.
