  • Lava Tube!

    April 21, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Just got out of the lava tube! No lava left, but after making the tube like a little underground river, the lava drained out leaving a labyrinth of tunnels. Nicholas and I kept Caroline’s heart beating fast by exploring ahead several hundred feet. The tunnels ranged in size from maybe 10 feet high to 30, but we had to squeeze through some 4 foot sections. These tubes go on for miles.Read more

So we’re driving home from our trip to the summit of Mauna Kea and we start hearing weird noises in the car, like of something breaking or being crushed. Turns out it was the water bottles that we had drank at the summit, and replaced the lid on. The pressure differential between 14,000 feet and sea level crushed the bottles!Read more

  • Captain Cook Monument

    April 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We hiked down to the monument and some of the world’s best snorkeling. The hike was gruelling, at 2.5 miles each way, traversing 1200 feet of elevation. We were saved by a kind couple who gave us some of their water on the way out. We had only brought 2L for the three of us and it was not enough. Our calves are going to be sore tomorrow.Read more

While walking to find something to eat, a lady stopped us on the side of the road and complimented my (Peter) colourful shirt. She then welcomed us to the North Shore and introduced herself as Aunty Miley. An auspicious start....Read more

  • Surfin Safari

    April 29, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

This morning the three of us took a two hour surfing lesson. Since we all went, we have no pictures. Nicholas did the best of all of us and was standing up pretty good by the end of the lesson. Turns out I didn’t figure out what I was doing wrong until near the end. Caroline did pretty well until she got a charlie horse and ended up cheering us on from the neutral zone.
Several turtles joined us in the waves, and a group from Sweden were out on their third lesson at the same time as us.
