Carcassonne

Our next stop was Carcassonne, which sits above and beside the River Aude on a rock occupied since before the arrival of the Romans. The ramparts and fortifications that we can see today date from the 11th-14th centuries.

It has an outer wall and an inner wall, which made successful attacks on the city almost impossible. Their are great views of the city from the ramparts.
