    Arromanches played a strategically important role in the landings and the subsequent invasion.

    It was here that the Allies built the artificial harbour ordered by Winston Churchill, which they named Port Winston. It was needed to allow a safe landing port for supplies and soldiers.

    What a feat of engineering it was. It was also crucial in the Allied victory. Parts of the artificial harbour still remain.

    We had a choice to see the Bayeaux Tapestry or the D-Day Museum at Arromanches. Seeing both would have been better, but we went to the D-Day Museum, which was excellent.
