    80% of the old city of Saint-Malo on the English Channel coast of Brittany was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944, as it was held strongly by the Germans. It didn't return to allied hands until the last day of fighting in the war. It was rebuilt using the original town plan.

    The walled city had a long history as a port for piracy in the 18th and 19th century.
