The Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee is famous for its five Mallard ducks that live in the hotel's lobby fountain and march through it daily at 11 AM and 5 PM:
The tradition began in 1933 when Frank Schutt, the hotel's general manager at the time, and his friend Chip Barwick returned from a hunting trip in Arkansas with some live duck decoys. After a few drinks, they thought it would be funny to put the ducks in the fountain, and guests loved the idea. The hotel soon replaced the decoys with five North American Mallards, and in 1940, Edward Pembroke, a former circus trainer and bellman, began training the birds to march. Pembroke served as the hotel's first "duckmaster" for 50 years until his retirement in 1991. The March of the Peabody Ducks has captivated guests ever since, and the hotel now hosts a special ceremony led by a professional duckmaster!Meer informatie
