Relax, Meet and Explore

Today I slept in until 9am and Ava slept till 11 after a long journey to reach New York. Today was about checking out Macy’s, Visiting Time Square and Meeting up with Uncle Karl Bardosh after not seeing him for 13 years.
What an absolute incredible and extraordinary man, he is a professor in film and television at New York University. He is a film director and has won an award at Cannes film festival.

The Statue of Liberty, 911, Soho, Little

Ava and I explored so much today… we met the Statue of Liberty 🗽 wow she is a magnificent woman…
9/11 memorial… there is not much I can say except honouring the victims of that horrific day has been so beautifully and respectfully represented. I couldn’t go into the museum… my mind feels like a museum as the etchings of the planes, people running, screaming and the sound of sirens… the sight of dust… fear, terror and loss is embedded on all our minds forever. 💕🫶🙏

The afternoon we went on a walking tour of SoHo, Little Italy and China Town. The history of this city is absolutely mind blowing especially coming from Australia with a country so young.
Dinner time one of Ava’ s with Raising Canes… well…wow a chicken shop with a DJ… fricken fabulous!Read more

Food on foot tour Hells Kitchen

Food on foot tour today with Ava was an amazing experience as we ventured out with a mixed group of travellers; coming from Germany, Italy, England and of course the Sutherland Shire.
Our guide Corey… clearly loved his food so we all knew it was going to be an amazing experience! Corey took us to the neighbourhood of Hell’s Kitchen… where we walked in locals streets and ate at local restaurants.
Empanadas, Tacos, Pizza and divine pastries.
I seriously cannot get past the architecture of this city… and some of these businesses have been family owned for over 100 years.
Old mate Corey took us to a local park where I saw a drug deal take place and three gangs in opposite corners from one another.
I’m sure Corey thought he was untouchable as a fat, white racist that sounded like Woodey from Toy Story… but very knowledgeable and informative and a fabulous experience. The local food was amazingly fresh and tasty and inexpensive!Read more

Gospel at Harlem

Ava and I travelled to Harlem on the subway and to be honest I felt like I was stepping onto a set of NYPD. We left the subway the wrong exit… mistake no.1…
As we walked up the stairs a few dodgy guys came down the stairs and as we stepped up to the top of the stairs someone had done a big 💩!
As we walked out and looked around police cars and ambulances around… lots of screaming and shouting… “Ava keep walking, head up shoulders back and no eye contact…”
Ava said “yeh mum it doesn’t feel like a good place…”
We finally made it to the church (thankfully)
And wow what a magnificent place and congregation.
The church was so beautiful, sandstone and beautiful stained glass windows…
But the reverend and singers… so talented, happy and loving towards all of us.
We left and took off to the subway and made our way back to our hotel… the subways are weird so many different exits I think by the time I leave on Sunday I’ll get it.Read more

Meeting my cousin for the first time

Ava and I travelled to West 4 street to meet Uncle Karl and his daughter Melinda.
Over the years we met Uncle Karl in Disneyland in the 70’s and then again in 2011 when he came to Australia.
This trip I’ve learnt so much about the Bardosh side of the family which has been absolutely incredible… also how incredibly talented Uncle Karl’s daughter Melinda is and how proud he is of her. Although it was a short meeting tonight it was so wonderful to know I have another cousin and I can’t wait to get to know her… its times like this that Facebook is really positive…
After we met at Cafe Reggio: Melinda left and uncle Karl, Ava and I walked around the village. This area is an arty, jazz and comedy precinct and Uncle told me that this was where Lady Gaga was discovered and Heath Ledger had lived there!Read more

Yankees VS Baltimore

Ava and I arrived to 161 St Yankee Stadium and I assumed to follow the crowd wearing the Yankees jersey… nope clearly my lesson learnt as I have always believed and told people be a leader not a follower… seriously the exits on all the subways are ridiculously confusing.
We eventually arrived and found a see of people.
We missed the start of the game but heard the excitement… upon entering the stadium I could not believe the enormity and the crowd.
We sat in our seats but we began to melt as the weather was 35*C… so we moved up to the top and observed the division and hate between the Yankees and Baltimore… a little bit like Saints and Manly!
We decided to leave after an hour as the crowd drank and threw things at one another I wasn’t prepared to go the full distance with Ava especially assuming the exit to the stadium would be crazy… one of the Yankee fans yelled this to his daughter “get excited child we are at a Yankees game not a funeral!”
We really did not want to hang around to see what the Yankees fans would be like if they lost… needless to say I am happy I followed my gut feeling as they lost…5-17!Read more

Empire State Building

We slept in this morning and I woke with a surprise that I forgot to set my alarm… shit another wake up Ava we need to get to Empire State Building..
off we went thank fully it was only two blocks away..
Ava really enjoyed this experience… thank goodness… the views from level 80, 86 and 102 was exhilarating to say the least. Also I was so happy to see Stephen Whiltshire sketching of New York. Stephen is an artist from England, he is autistic and has a photographic memory. He was flown in a helicopter over New York and when they landed he sketched it all from memory. Such an awesome gift.Read more
