Roncesvalles to Zubiri 23ish Km’s
May 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C
Day two from Roncesvalles to Zubiri
23km and beautiful weather
A 7am buffet breakfast where I may have pocketed a few snacks for the road
A beautiful walk out and some pics in front of the iconic Santiago Compostela sign, covered in stickers now.
We soon wandered into the ‘witches forest’ where it’s believed that is where they all hung out to perform their rituals and magic in years gone by, it was dark and green and I loved it - an enchanted forest feel.
Today’s walk was really pretty, a lot of shade along the way, the Spanish villages are so different to our aesthetic in Australia with most buildings looking a bit similar.
I had just got used to the Bonjour in France, I kept getting it mixed up with Merci ! Now we are into Gracias territory and I’m still saying Bounjour!
My body pulled up surprisingly well, after yesterday and my fatigue was more from lack of sleep than anything else.
I walked quite a bit of today alone which was nice just to take my time, or feel like I was holding anybody up when I stopped to take photos, it was peaceful. I passed people throughout the day greeting them with a ‘Buen Camino’ I didn’t really have any conversations of substance just went along my merry way. It’s nice not to feel like you have to engage.
It’s funny at home I have a need to be listening to a podcast or music when I go for my walks, I haven’t even thought of it here - I guess it’s new and exciting territory.
We ended the day coming into zubiri, it was a really steep descent and my feet were sore. The most beautiful freshwater stream greeted us so it was shoes and socks off and weary feet into the cold water. We watched a group of young South Korean men entertaining a dog or maybe the dog was entertaining them - nice way to end Day 2.
Two sweet young Spanish girls asked us if they could interview us about our Camino - they asked our names, ages, where we were from and a few questions about why we were here, their English was really good considering how bad my Spanish is.
We have a masseuse in our group who just spent half an hour massaging my feet and calves, how’s that for luck?
Tomorrow night we hit Pamplona, no running of the bulls at this time of year. A couple of our group are ducking off tomorrow night to head to San Sebastián (about 1 hr 20 minutes away). Zach Bryan is playing a concert there and clearly the Spanish aren’t as into him as us Aussies because there’s tickets left and good tickets too.
I was so tempted but I’m flat out doing the walking day after day without adding a late night concert to it - time to grow up Gabby x
Oh and fun fact - it’s light until 9:30-10pm hard for little old me who likes to turn in at 8:30!Read more

TravelerHappy to hear you felt good day 2. I was astounded that the body reset itself after the hardest of days. It shows you did your prep.
TravelerToday I felt pretty exhausted so I did as they do in Spain and had a siesta xx
