  • Day 6 Grahovo Ob Baci to Most na Soci

    June 9, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌩️ 18 °C

    19km, 748 ascent, 897 descent
Our lovely host Danica loaded us up with food and schnapps and dropped us back to our starting village. Our path took us through an enchanted forest this morning and was once again very steep up to the Senica viewing point where we were rewarded with our first view of the Soca River below. When we walked into the village of Most Na Soci we were delighted to find a small bar overlooking the turquoise blue water of the Soca below.Read more

  • Day 7 Most Na Soci to Tolmin

    June 10, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

    9.5 Km along the Soca
Today we had a leisurely walk along the water front with lots of people attending a kayaking event that happens once a year. When we arrived at the confluence of the 2 rivers we were able to soak up the sunshine and sit with our feet/legs in the crystal clear (but freezing cold) water. In the evening we enjoyed our final meal together with Anita and Dietmar before we branch off in seperate directions - we have loved every minute of their company.Read more

  • Day 8 Tolmin to Smarto

    June 11, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Today we were met at our hotel by Alenka, who drove us from Tolmin to Smarton. Although the sun was shining when we arrived at our hotel within 10 minutes rain and storms hit (just like last time we arrived in Smartno, 4 years ago but at least we didn't have to hike through it). We enjoyed a lovely evening at a hilltop bar and restaurant (the views were Adelaide Hills cross Tuscany) and fell asleep listening to a group of party goers singing beautifully in Slovenian at a wine bar across the road.Read more

  • Day 9 Smartno to Solkan

    June 12, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

    19km, 724 ascent, 610 descent,
    Our rating - difficult++
We started our walk from the mediaeval village of Smartno in the tourist pearl of Brda - well know for it's excellent wines and cherry orchards. We continued up to the Sabotin Ridge to face 3 hours of scrambling across jagged loose rocks on the knife edge ridge, with a massive sheer rock face to the Soca River below. We managed to see a small Horn Nosed Viper (Slovenia's most poisonous snake) on the track.
When we finally arrive at the peak the war museum was closed so we took a short break soaking up the incredible views before tackling the ridiculously steep descent to Solkan which - see Stava profile below. The entire hike took intense concentration and we could not believe we managed not to take a tumble.

Today we travelled by bus to Kobarid (back on the main circular Juliana Trail).
We had to walk down to the campground to do a load of washing and had the pleasure of basking in the sun on the rocks by the Soca River - best laundromat experience ever!
We are staying 2 nights at a lovely hotel here with a small balcony perfect for people watching below and mountains above.

  • Day 11 - Rest day Kobarid

    June 14, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We took a chance today by catching the bus to Bovec to try and take the ski lift up the mountain to 2200m. When we arrived at the lift station they said the visibility up there was so poor that it wasn't worth doing. We did some retail therapy instead at a small outdoor clothing shop that we loved last time we were there. We visited the cheese museum in the afternoon and waded in the Soca again once the sun was out.Read more

  • Day 12 Kobarid to Bovec

    25km, 566 ascent, 231 descent Rating - moderate

This was a stunning day of walking with the water thundering below us through a series of deep gorges and ravines.

  • Day 14 Log Pod Mangartom to Tarvisio

    June 17, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

    9km, 650 ascent
A super steep forest walk - a little like mountaineering with hand hold cables in some places but not all. We reached the top of the Predil Pass and crossed into Italy.
The final 10km of today's stage was on the busy main road and we were advised against walking on it, so we took the local bus for this section straight to Tarvisio where we had a few extra hours to relax.Read more

  • Day 16 Kranjska Gora to Mojstrana

    June 19, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    21km, 222 ascent
Our hiking day started with a hill climb but we were rewarded with beautiful views of the mountains all around.
We were very excited to discover a small home brewery on the trail and although it looked closed, we called loudly in Slovenian from the garden until our 'beer angel' appeared. She served us fabulous, cold, home brew (that her son produces) and she was so welcoming - we 'chatted' in sign language, basic English and lots of smiles.Read more
