A disappointment, missed our trip, not much to do except read and plan future trips. Each day includes five to six trips, some of which are in addition to the usual programme. We have a group of over twenty Expedition Crew, who accompany us on the trips and also provide a range of talks and run art or science workshops - some eleven events each day to choose from. Most are academics or researchers and specialise in such areas as Geology, History, Oceanography and Photography. Some have spent a life time researching bird species or Wales and Dolphins. We have had lectures on identifying species of Seabird, Dolphins, the very early geological history of Earth, and the early Norse rulers of Scotland, the Orkneys and the Hebrides.Read more

Start with a photo of posh St Moritz -- mmmmm no thanks, not for me. Then a lovely train journey, ruined castles - can you spot the second one? Had to buy Toblerone. Little known fact - the man who invented it was so Impressed with the Matterhorn and the surrounding mountains that he shaped it like the Alps, and put the Matterhorn on the wrapper - you may already have guessed this.Read more

Where am I now?

If its Thursday it must be St Moritz. Train to Zurich tomorrow and then home. Am filled with so many memories, wonderful scenery - such a different country.

Up to the highest point.

And the coldest. Took the highest cable - car in the world up to 3883 metres and -1c. Apart from cold, got breathless - less oxygen. At this spot, Klein Matterhorn, wonderful views and you can see Zermatt down the distant valley.Read more

The Matterhorn

Up early, then the train to Gornergrat. Wonderful views all round of mountains and glaciers, and little old Matterhorn. There are Marmots in these hills, they burrow into the earth- some are giants.

Sad farewell to the beautiful city of Lucerne. Spectacular rail journey to Zermatt. A noise - "Mummy, Mummy please buy me that giant Toblerone". It's only the view from my balcony.

Just back from Stanserhorn (Sshhtanshenhorrrn) right to the summit. Wonderful 360 degree view of the Alpes, including the Matterhorn, Eiger and Jungfrau Joch. Started up with an ancient wooden train and continued with a two deck cable - car with an open upper deck, called appropriately the Cabrio. Weather hot.Read more

If it was not for the cloud, with a few breaks, the views, even as far as Germany would be great. In the few breaks I took a photo of the Matterhorn and the Jungfrau. Other photos of the journey here

I challenge Pilatus

Tomorrow, I will ascent this monster. Named after Pontius Pilate. In the Middle Ages people believed that the Lake was haunted by the restless spirit of Pilate, ascents of Pilatus were forbidden. I might take the easy way - world's steepest cog rail, 48%, and descend on "The Dragon Ride", they say like a bird.Read more
