Beach day in Himare

Our day in Himarë started like most others on this trip slow, easy, and familiar. We had breakfast and spent a bit of time chatting with family back home, enjoying that quiet morning rhythm we’ve grown to love on our travels.

Originally, today was meant to be about the mountains as we had planned to drive through the famous Llogara Pass known for its stunning views and winding roads. But after checking our route for tomorrow’s drive to Tirana, we realised we'd be passing through it anyway. So, in true spontaneous fashion, we swapped out the mountains for the sea and decided to make it a beach day instead.

We set our sights on Gjipe Beach a place I’d read about that looked like a hidden slice of paradise. What I hadn’t realised was just how hidden it really was. After a short drive, we found ourselves facing a steep, winding, gravel 4WD track from the carpark one of those “this can’t possibly be the way” type of trails. It felt like it went on forever. But, as these stories often go, the payoff was worth it!

Once we arrived, Gjipe Beach absolutely delivered. Tucked between towering cliffs with crystal clear water and soft pebbles underfoot, it was absolutely gorgeous! We stayed for an hour or two, relaxing, and soaking up the calm. The walk back to the car didn’t feel nearly as rough maybe because we knew what to expect this time!

By the time we got back to Himarë it was just after 2 p.m. We popped into a supermarket for a quick snack lunch and made our way back to the accommodation for a rest.

In the evening, we headed out around 5:30 to soak up the golden hour and grab a bite. We picked up another one of those amazing pitas and brought it down to the beach for dinner. It was simple, quiet, and perfect. The light was soft, the waves gentle, and a few friendly dogs joined us while we sat and talked, watching the day slowly come to a close. To top it all off, we grabbed a gelato and just continued to enjoy each other’s company on the beach.

Tomorrow we leave Himarë and head to Tirana our final stop in Albania before heading to Montenegro. Hard to believe how fast the days have flown by, but for now, we’re soaking in every last bit of this beautiful coast.Read more
