GezginI've only used it once, on Mather Pass. I wanted something more sturdy than a trekking pole to lean on coming down. I didn't feel a slip was likely so not needed for a possible self-arrest/belay so far

GezginSince you are up above timber-line, I think that’s a Ptarmigan. They are in the same family but grouse stay low. Ptarmigan feathers will go white before winter sets in.
