Kylemore: Castle to Abbey

Kylemore — a Benedictine Abbey since 1920 — was originally built between 1867-1871 as a castle. It was a gift from Mitchell Henry to his wife, Margaret. Through generations it served as a home, a haven, a school, and a sanctuary.

Taking advantage of the relative lack of crowds when we arrived at 10:00a, we went straight to the house to tour the ground floor rooms ... the only ones open to the public since the Benedictine nuns are in residence upstairs.Read more
