• Day 3 Cuzco then Sacred Valley

    3 октября 2023 г., Перу ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Quite the adventures today. We headed off super early from Lima to take a bus to the airport. It was teeming with people, but our check in was quick & efficient. We dawdled about not realizing how long the queue would be to get through customs. Fortunately we got to the gate in time. Chris had told us to pick up snacks as we wouldn’t be eating until about 4. I quickly bought some veggie wraps.

Cuzco is at 11,150 ft - getting off the plane it felt like the ramp was moving under us.

Upon arrival we were taken to a touristy restaurant overlooking the city. The view was nice - the food horrendous. It was a fixed menu, with only a few options for single items. I ate my wrap and Peter ordered the chicken soup. YUK - it was impossible to get the chicken off the bone and the potatoes were rock hard. One member of our group refused to pay for it - his wife is Peruvian so knows how the dish should be made. We polite Canadians didn’t want to raise a fuss, so said nothing. Fortunately, things picked up from here on.
    .
First stop was a farm when we fed the llamas - great fun. Couldn’t help but wonder when they’d last been fed - they seemed starved. Looking about I noticed workmen creating a new brick wall the old fashioned way - interesting.

Next stop was a view over the city, again for photo ops, then finally we arrived at our hotel. It was down a tiny bumpy road so we had our apprehensions. To our surprise it was totally charming - AMAK Valle Sagrado was set along the Urubambe River surrounded by flowers & greenery.

We lucked out and had a room on the main floor with a small deck looking out on the gardens, river & restaurant. We even had a sitting room - not bad for "charm." class. The highlight, though, was the food - amazing. Don't know where they found their chef - but what a talent. Actually Peruvians are known for their cuisine - and aside for the "rubber chicken" today, we haven't been disappointed.

  • Day 2 Exploring Lima

    2 октября 2023 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Breakfast was delicious - lots of fresh fruit, eggs, cereal, cheese, salad stuff etc - the only disappointment was the juice - great exotic labels but so watery there were indistinguishable.

We had a city tour lined up for 9:00 but Peter & I headed out early to buy water and wander about. We realized we were only 2 blocks away from the ocean. Returning, I saw Val & Rose heading out so we 3 headed to the ocean - so picturesque, even despite the fog. We were told it’s due to cold air from the mountains meeting warm air from the sea.

First stop on our city tour was the ocean - not far from where we’d just been been. The focal point there was Park del Amor - the pic explains why.

Next stop was the main square - wasn’t far but the traffic was horrendous so it took at least an hour. We disembarked and wandered around the square - beautifully laid out around the Palace. In 1953 it was called Plaza Pizarro, and had a monument of the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro. In 2003 the monument was removed and the square was renamed Plaza Perú - no doubt with lots of controversy. Sounds a bit like Canada . . . .

We then headed into Museo del Convento de Santo Domingo. This was originally a home for the Nuns, then later for the Monks. It was created in the 1530s and was the first university - and the oldest in the Americas. Separate rooms were dedicated to 3 saints - Rose of Lima (died at 31) Martin de Porres (mixed race) and St John Marcias (Spanish born Dominican Friar.) The library was incredible with its 25,000 books. It’s being well guarded for fear of fires, and slowly each and every book is being preserved.

The highlight, though, was lunch at Alfresco. The ceviche was the best we’ve ever had, and the causa was amazing. Causa is my new fav dish - mashed sweet potatoes wrapped around seafood, avocados, whatever. Sounds weird but it's soooo pretty and delish.

That night we all headed to the ocean to watch the sunset. Waiting for it to set, we went separate ways - Rose & Val to check out the shops, Madeline & I for a walk, Jacqueline & Jim were off trying to get a sim card, and John & Peter went for coffee. This is where the fun began.

Turns out they weren't drinking coffee but Pisco sours - actually triples without ice. YIKES Pisco Sours are local 40% brandy with a touch of lime juice. Needless to say, they came back red faced & happy.

We got our sunset pics, then looked for a spot where the rest of us could sample Pisco Sours. Just around the corner from our hotel was a 2 for 1 bar, so we headed there. They were sooooo good, and went down so quickly & smoothy that Rose ordered round two for everyone. I drank my first and shared my second with Peter. Now we were desperately in need of food.

There was a small Arabic restaurant next to our hotel so we popped in. By that time everyone was giddy. The idea of eating shawarmas in Lima seemed extremely funny. Peter was hilarious- kept us laughing the whole time. Walking home, though, he confessed he was a bit wobbly.

  • Day 1 Getting to Peru

    1 октября 2023 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Things have been so hectic since we arrived in Peru that I’m actually writing this on day 5. Per usual I’ve taken tons of pics so hopefully I can remember what I did when.
We met everyone - Madeline, John, Jacqueline, Jim, Rose & Val at the airport. Everyone had arrived in good time - Rose got there super early to interview for her Nexus card - and passed. John & Madeline had to set out early from their home, and got there 3 hours in advance. Our flight to Newark was 1 hour delayed, but we got our connection and arrived in in Lima about 9:00pm.

Chris, the Exoticca rep, was there waiting for us - and the 18 others who'd signed up for this trip. Looking around, I'd say we were probably the "seniors" of the group. As we'd never joined a group tour before, we were curious - and a bit apprehensive . . . Fortunately we had our own little group within the group. . . .

We piled into a big bus and headed to our hotel. On route there Chris outlined our itinerary with a delightful sense of humour. Outlining all the early morning pick up times, his comment was "This is not a pleasure trip - it's an adventure.” Little did we know how true that would be.

We’ve stayed in Ibis hotels before - most recently in London - and they're all basically the same - simple, functional and a bit funky. The room set up was identical to London - basics only and comfy beds. It was late by now, so we all headed up to our rooms.

  • Heading Home

    18 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Unfortunately our 3 weeks in England has come to an end. It worked out amazing well - chose a well located hotel in London, saw 2 delightful musicals, chose good AirBnBs for Cheltenham & Newquay, had lovely side trips to Oxford, Bath & St Ives, and ended it with 2 fun days with good British friends.

The key, I think, was having the right « tools » as we wandered about - SIM card that worked well, and apps that worked for trains, tubes & buses - plus being flexible when things didn’t go as planned.

All in all a great trip.

  • Lodsworth Day 2

    16 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Today was the day to further explore the surrounding area. After a delicious healthy breakfast, we drove to Petworth Deer Park and Home. The grounds are beautifully maintained - and yes, we saw deer with hugh antlers.

The home is amazing - a 17th century palace for the 3rd Earl of Egrement, with a huge collection of artwork, sculptures, furniture. I was curious about the owner, and the day to day operations of the palace. It seems the current family now lives in 1/5 of the palace and rest is open as a museum. Interesting to see the original kitchen and hear about the 123 servants and the tunnels they travelled through to « service «  the family. A true Upstairs, Downstairs scenario.

The Earl himself was an interesting character. A real patron of the arts, he had 42 illegitimate children - his only legitimate one, a daughter, died in fancy so his nephew inherited his estate.

From there we were off a long, lovely hike on the South Downs Way. Jill had prepared a lunch for us, so we were good to go. Spectacular scenery - the pics say more than I could. Dinner was at Badger Restaurant a local fav. I was enjoying the ambience and company so much I forgot to take pics.

  • Lodsworth - Staying with Friends

    15 сентября 2023 г., Канада ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today we headed from Newquay to Lodsworth to stay with friends, Jill & Peter Beckingham, whom we'd met in Manila. He was the British High Commissioner there, and she was super active in supporting NGO's not only in The Philippines but also in India where they were posted later. Lots of impressive stories to tell about her fundraising efforts.

Miraculously our 3 train connections worked as planned and we arrived there about 5:00pm. Their home is lovely - spacious & full of memorabilia of the numerous postings they've been on. More importantly, they are gracious down to earth people whose lifestyle is similar to ours.

We paused at their home for "tea" then headed off on a walk around the neighbourhood. This included the Lodsworth Larder, a small shop Jill volunteers in, then a local church - interestingly called Peter Church. From there we walked home then drove to the local pub, Langham Brewery, to sample their beers. Loved the ambience - small, quaint & friendly. We sat outdoor surrounded casks of beer. A friend of theirs was there, and regaled us with his numerous stories. Such fun to meet the local people.

The night we had the best sleep every - super soft beds with light cozy duvets,

  • Newquay Day 7 - Hiking North

    14 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Peter wanted to do more biking today, but they don’t make it easy here. After lots of googling & phone calls he finally gave up.

Plan B then was to walk as far north as we could. Turns out that was a “brilliant” decision - am I sounding British 🤪. The walk from our place to Watergate Bay is spectacular - all along the ocean. Again the pics say more than I ever could.

We’re so impressed with the countryside here - beautiful trails along the ocean, miles of sandy beaches - I’ve lost count - and lots of open green spaces. Love that they have benches everywhere overlooking the ocean - if only I could sit quietly and meditate. 🤔

Our other observation is the dogs - they’re everywhere. At the Beach Hut Restaurant where we stopped for lunch, we were surrounded by them - but they were well behaved.

So sadly our week here in Newquay has come to an end. Must say I’m quite charmed by this place - aside from Main Street that’s a bit tacky, the surrounding areas are beautiful and especially good for hikers, beach lovers and families with kids. Wish we’d brought our bathing suits.

Tomorrow we head to Lodsworth to visit good British friends, Jill & Peter. Curious to find out more about England from their perspectives.

  • Newquay Day 6 - Celebrating my B-Day

    13 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Such a great day - really memorable. We headed out to explore other parts of the city. Must say my impression has totally changed - the southern part of the city is lovely - beautifully maintained parks with manicured flower beds as the pics show.

We decided to head across the Tidal Foot Bridge - big warnings to check the tide times. Needless to say, we walked too far, and when it came time to turn back it seemed we couldn’t cross that bridge or any of the other tidal bridges.

Meanwhile, it was fun watching people paddle board & kayak down the Gannel Estuary to the river as the tide came in. I’m assuming they headed back out with the tide.

As for being stranded on the south side of the river, we finally saw a small wooden sign on the path saying Caravan Park, so headed up. It was packed with trailers. Fortunately there was a reception office and we were directed to head into Crantock, a tiny cute town, to hopefully catch a bus back to Newquay. Fortunately we did.

We even got back in time for our reservation at the Harbour Fish & Grill. It was perfect in every way - view, food & ambience. As a finale to the day we decided to see Barbie - a feel good delightful movie that sent me home smiling.

In the evening got B-Day wishes from the girls & friends, and had FaceTime chats with Daryn, Daina & families. All in all a great 76th.

  • Newquay Day 5 - St Ives

    12 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

As we had a Britrail pass for 8 days - actually only 7 due to the rail strike Sept 1 - we thought it would be fun to visit St Ives. So glad we did.

It’s charming with far more history, culture & class than Newquay - also far more touristy. We lucked out and there was a September Festival on - a celebration of music & art. The pics again show it better than I can explain.

As for getting there - no issues going, but on the return trip the bus was late so we missed our connection in Par. It was now 6:30pm and the next train wasn’t until 8:20pm. Peter’s string of 4 letter words again emerged.

Remembering missing our connection in Par on Friday and people being hustled into taxis and buses at St Austen, we took the train back there. A young couple from Scotland, who’d also missed the connection, had an app for the buses so we knew they were still running.

As luck would have it, the station master lady who’d « rescued»: us was there and we had a good chat with her - as was the bus driver who’d taken us to Padstow to bike yesterday and recognized us. Small world.

Must say it was cold today and we weren’t properly dressed. So happy to get home and turn on the heat. Will put on my puffy jacket tomorrow.

  • Newquay Day 4 - Biking the Camel Trail

    11 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today was a biking day. As Newquay is super hilly we decided to take the bus to Padstow - 1.5 hours - rent bikes there and head out along the Camel Trail.

It’s a 58K flat trail from Padstow, through Wadebridge, passing by Bodmin, ending in Wenfordbridge. There, we lucked upon a tiny eco friendly “hut” where a sweet young girl created a great veggie sandwich for us that wasn’t on the menu. Loved that we literally opened a mini fridge and helped ourselves to beers. After a much needed pause, we headed back. So lovely as the pics show.

Heading out from Padstow along the Camel Estuary the tide was out so the land was dry and boats were stranded. It was a whole new scene coming back when the tide was in. I tried to get pics from the same places to show the differences.

Must say, though, the bus ride to & from Padstow was as exciting as the biking - one lane roads, lots of switchbacks, buses & cars stopping & inching over to let others pass - plus amazing views of the ocean and countryside. Heading back we specifically chose the upper front seats to watch the action. See video.

All in all a great day.

  • Newquay Day 3 - Hiking West

    10 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

It rained early morning so we didn’t head out until about 11 - destination Pentire Head at the far western end. On route we passed by the golf course - sooooo picturesque overlooking Fistral Beach - then kept walking. Final destination was well worth it - amazing view of the ocean plus another beach to the south - Crantock. Watching the surfers, it seemed they had to head pretty far out to catch the waves.
So many beaches - city centre has 7 and there are 4 more within easy walking distance. No wonder this is a hot spot for Brits.
Wouldn’t say Newquay is a classy area, though - setting is amazing, but there seem to be lots of « surfer dudes » old & young. I could be wrong - have to explore more.
Again my pics say more than my words so will stop here.

  • Newquay Day 2 - Exploring

    9 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Must say I’m charmed by this place - 9 beautiful beaches, lovely walking paths, lots of action. Fistral Beach is surfers’ heaven. Saw a few guys riding the waves in, but no little ones like Reevie.
We climbed up to a look out point at Towan Head, then walked all along the coast to the Harbour. We lucked out - there was a women’s rowing competition underway - tons of teams from all over England. To my surprise the ladies weren’t as young as I’d thought - and were all shapes & sizes.

My pics say more than my words so I’ll stop here. Amazing weather - sunny 24C with nice breezes coming off the ocean.

Figuring out how to use the induction oven and « hob » this evening was a challenge, but I’m much wiser now.

  • Newquay Day 1 -Arriving

    8 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We made it to Newquay - but not without a story to tell.
We walked to the train station and started our 5 hour « expedition” to Newquay - changes in Taunton & Par. Change 1 was OK, but at Taunton the train was half an hour late, standing room only - which meant we’d miss our connection to Newquay. Note to self - never travel to seaside resorts on a Friday without reserved seats. 😣
When the train finally arrived, I elbowed my way in - getting good at that - and a young Brit took pity on me and offered me his seat. Meanwhile Peter was trapped near the door surrounded by people & luggage. He did strike up an conversation with a young guy who was heading to Ireland with the military so that helped him pass the time. Meanwhile, I had a lovely conversation with « my » young man. Turns out he lived in TO for 3 years and loved it. Said 2 of his best friends came to visit him, married Canadians and still live in TO. Eventually Peter was able to get a seat.
As we’d be missing our connection to Newquay, and as National Rail has a policy of paying travellers when trains are late - after doing the math, they told us to get off at the station after Par and they’d arrange transportation. About 50 people piled off and the station master lady had to line up buses and taxis for us all. Not easy but she did it - with a good sense of humour. We got a taxi and actually arrived in Newquay earlier than the schedule train.

By now it was about 6:30pm. We walked to our AirBnB, got in easily and headed out to explore. Must say I loved the vibe instantly - miles & miles of beaches, hilly terrain with lots of walking streets. Weather was a perfect 25C so what’s not to like.

Peter was keen to watch the Rugby World Cup, so we stopped at an Irish Pub - the place was hopping. Must say rugby is far more fun to watch than American football - non stop action. The only problem now was that most of the restaurant had closed at 9:00 - lots of bars but no food. Fortunately, we eventually found Indian Summer that had delicious Indian, Bangladeshi dishes.

Weather looks good for tomorrow - anxious to explore more.

  • Cheltenham Day 8 - Bath Spa

    7 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Bath was lovely, brilliant . . . am I sounding British enough ??? Love trying to mimic their accent - not only the vowel sounds but the intonation. Quite catchy.

Must say Bath is charming - steeped in history with towering churches everywhere, lots of walking streets with high end stores, and the famous Roman Baths. Had to stop in there. Made us think perhaps we should have based ourselves there. I can see why Jamie loved it.

The pics say more than my words, but one highlight was finding an Anokhi store. It was my fav shop in India and it’s the first time I’ve seen one elsewhere. Turns out the owner is the brother of the lady who founded the shop in New Delhi. I basically hate shopping, but after chatting with him I couldn’t resist buying a hand printed kurta. So unique.

The trains worked quite well - some delays but overall absolutely fine. Only took an hour coming back.

Tomorrow we head to Newquay in Cornwall - should be whole new experience.

  • Cheltenham Day 6 - Oxford

    6 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Such a good day - but not necessarily as we’d planned.
Having figured out to use the National Rail app & Britrail pass, I searched out our best route to Oxford, took a screen shot of it and felt quite smut about my IT skills. Problem was, the train we were supposed to catch was cancelled.
OK plan B. Fortunately there were lots of helpful staff in the station who suggested a good but longer route.
Oxford is charming as the pics show. Loved watching the “punting” along the Cherwell River - propelling the boat from the back using a paddle - hilarious as some were more experienced than others. Delighted to see girls “punting” tourists about.

We had a good long chat with a young student at Trinity College. Turns out if you « qualify » which is onerous based on A level grades & other criteria, the government gives £9,000 for tuition plus £4000 for accommodations that you have to pay back when you graduate. There are 3 sessions per year - allowing lots of time in between for students to work and pay back their expenses. Classes don’t resume until mid Oct, so unfortunately all was quiet.

Coming back our train was delayed about 20 minutes - seems someone was on the track - they didn’t give details - and the police had been called.
All in all a very worthwhile “adventure.”

I’ve successfully activated our Britrail pass for tomorrow so we’re off to Bath. Jamie has been there and loved it - curious to check it out.

  • Cheltenham Day 5 - Biking

    5 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

That was quite the adventure today.
Getting the bikes worked out well - in a locker near the train station and we had the locker # and code. Problem started with where to go. AllTrails app said there weren’t many biking trails nearby so I’d downloaded Komoot - not a good idea. We ended up going around in circles, which caused Peter to generate all the 4 letter words he knew in long continuous streams.
Zapping that app, I went back to AllTrails - fortunately I’d downloaded a trail to Leckhampton. We eventually found it, but turns out I’d downloaded a walking trail - definitely not meant for bikes as you’ll see in the pics of us pushing our bikes straight up a steep hill.
We eventually reached the top, got some good pics and were able to «  mountain bike » it back down through the rocks and tree roots. Miraculously we ended up back in Cheltenham near our place.
We paused at Moran’s a quaint pub near our place for sandwiches and beers - desperately needed. From here we headed back to the train station and took a lovely, scenic ride north to Pittville and around the lake. Soooo picturesque. We’d walked some of it yesterday. Did I mention it was 27C+.
Nice long shower & delish meal at home and we’re good to go for tomorrow.
I’ve been able to activate our Britrail pass for tomorrow - not easy but doable -
so we’ll be heading to Oxford. Here’s hoping all goes as planned

  • Cheltenham Day 4 - Hiking

    4 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Whew. I’m finally up to date writing this blog. Feels good. Have to get quicker & more efficient from now on.

I finally turned on the Find Penquins tracker, so hopefully our trips will now be recorded. Must say the 2 things I love when travelling are my local SIM card and phone charger - not only does it have 3 different plugs, but works as a charger when needed. I’ve used it almost every day to keep my phone charged.

Back to today. We finally figured out how to book bikes. Not easy - the local company had sold out to Compass Holidays so googling about we finally contacted them by phone and tomorrow we’re good to go. Have to hike it to the train station again, find a locker, use a code and hopefully the bikes will be there. We’ll see. . . . .

Meanwhile we used AllTrails to search out a good long hike nearby. 25,094 steps later we were back home exhausted by the 27C heat and steep climb up, but with lots of good pics and memories.

    3 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today, Sunday, was a 23,393 step day exploring Cheltenham further and trying to find info about bikes. We walked to the train station, found out about trains to Newquay, but no one was there with info about bikes. We wandered to where the shop was supposed to be but the sign said « Closed indefinitely » . . . .
We then headed north to Pittville enjoying the sites along the way - chimney pots, graffiti, lake, and stopped at a local pub for peanuts & beer. Love that the pubs are for families - have everything- sofas, billiards, public notices, whatever. So different from back home. Dinner again was at home - getting more used to the appliances now but only have 1 element that works, no oven mitts, etc, etc.

  • Cheltenham Day 2 - Exploring

    2 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Now that we’d settled in, it was time to scout about, buy groceries & figure out what to do here. Turns out we’re south of Cheltenham in an upper class area - 3 grocery shops nearby, plus lots of restaurants & pubs. We found a great local beer shop around the corner, picked up food essentials in the grocery store, then found a small market for fresh veggies & fruits. Once semi stocked up we headed into town. 15,933 steps we seemed to have wandered in circles and still couldn’t find what we were looking for - tourist office for basic info and bike rentals. Finally we were told the tourist office was closed - only place to get maps & info was the Library. As for bikes, we googled and it said available at the train station. Will search that out tomorrow. Doesn’t seem like they’re well set up for tourists.
We had dinner at home - always a challenge figuring out how the appliances work or don’t work.

  • Cheltenham Day 1 - Settling in

    1 сентября 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Our first setback. Up until now I’d been living in my happy « Pollyanna «  world, but to our dismay there was a train strike today called « industrial action » so there were no trains to Cheltenham.
OK plan B. . . . . Having made our way to Paddington, we now had to find Victoria Station. Fortunately the TfL tube app worked well and we finally made it there. Again, fortunately Peter spied a bus saying London to Oxford, so we hopped on. It was good - comfy seats, good views from the top deck and wifi. About 2 hours later we arrived in Oxford, but the bus from there was really local. 2.5 hours later we finally arrived in Cheltenham. So our Britrail pass, which we’d paid for was useless, and our 2 hour trip turned into 4.5.
The plus of the day is our Air BnB is great - spacious, well located & super clean. We headed out to explore a bit. Found a cute spot nearby for dinner.

  • London Day 5 - Guys & Dolls, Fab Dinner

    31 августа 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today was a great day - amazing theatre and delicious dinner.

We started off with a good English breakfast at Mad Hatter, then walked a short distance to the Tate Modern Museum - free & huge. My fav section was about technology especially Babel 2001, towers of radios all broadcasting at once.

We stopped at Bridge Theatre to purchase matinee tickets to Guys & Dolls - suggested by Jacqueline - and decided to go «  immersion » standing near the stage. We paused at the Gin Garden in Butler’s Wharf for drinks and headed back to the the theatre.

The show was an amazing experience. The stages were popping up & down all around us, and the cast members were moving among us. Staff dressed as police ushered us around as needed to ensure we weren’t in the way, which worked surprisingly well.

It was a happy feel good story with high energy dancing, catchy tunes and amusing lyrics. At intermission, they put up a few tables & chairs - and needing a break, we sat down. We were asked if we wouldn’t mind staying there and being part of the show. Needless to say we said YES. What fun. Our stage rose up and the dancers surrounded us. Our « fame » only lasted about 5 minutes, then our stage went down and we were escorted off. Still - soooo memorable .

I couldn’t take pics during the performance, but took some before, at intermission and after.

Dinner was also a highlight. Madeline had suggested Masala Zone in Covent Gardens and although we didn’t have a reservation, they found a table for us. The ambience was great - hundreds of puppets from Kerala hanging from the ceiling, and delicious aesthetically presented food. I loved the onion flower Bhajia - sooo pretty.

That was a 17,086 step day - and a great way to end our time in London.

  • London Day 4 - Crazy for You

    30 августа 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

As I recall, today was a touring & theatre day. We walked over the London Bridge to the Tower of London, then all the way to Hyde Park where we saw people on horseback. I took a pic of them, Peter took a pic of the horse “deposits.”

From there, Peter, not being impressed with my tattered scarf, decided he wanted to buy me a Liberty scarf at Harrods. Alas, Harrods no longer exists - it’s now Prada so we had to find our way to Liberty. We wandered in briefly, but I was overwhelmed with the prices - scarves were £120 x 320. There was no way I could justify that . . . . .

For lunch we popped into a tiny Vietnamese restaurant. The food was good - and cheap compared to most places.

The highlight of the day was Crazy for You. Michael, our new best friend, joined us. I’d told him we’d be in the front row, so he purchased a ticket next to us. Although he’d been there 3 times before, he said he’d never had the nerve to be in the front row - too intense. We all loved it - amazing dancing, amusing dialogue and catchy tunes.

After the show he suggested a pub nearby. To our luck the lead actor, Charlie Stemp, was there. I didn’t want to be too much of a paparazzi so resisted taking pics. I did go, though, and tell him how impressed I was. YIKES. He looked about 16, but turns out he’s 29. What a talent.

Based on my pics, today was a Greenwich day. We’d wanted to try all modes of transportation and as Jacqueline had suggested Greenwich, we searched for a pier. My googling showed Blackfriar, but it was closed - again perhaps due to the Bankers Holiday - so we walked back over the Tower Bridge to Butler’s Wharf. The boat came relatively quickly - lots of great views of bridges & buildings and we were soon there.
Jacqueline had suggested the Observatory so we went in search of it. Seems we took the most circuitous route possible but eventually got there. The view of Canary Wharf and the financial district was great. There was even a Stature of Montcalm who battled Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec. Interesting. Heading back down was super quick - we’d obviously taken the wrong route up - so we had lots of time to pause at the Old Brewery for beers.

The queue for the boat back to London was super long, so Peter having minimal patience opted for the tube. This actually worked well and soon we were in the heart of London again. We wandered into Leadenhall Market in the Royal Exchange Plaza, admired the classy Fortnum & Mason bar, and had a long chat with a lovely lady named Venice at the Red 8 Gallery. Little did she know we had no intention of purchasing the $$$$$ art pieces - although said our son in law might??? so we came away with lots of glossy brochures.

For dinner we popped into the Old Bank of England building on Fleet St. I loved the ambience, beer & vibe. Peter was less impressed with the food. All in all a great day.

  • London Day 2 - Exploring

    28 августа 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

I’m actually writing about our next 4 days in London from Cheltenham. We were soooo busy there I didn’t have time to pause, reflect and write things down. Fortunately I took tons of pics - now just have to get the old brain to remember what we did when.

So, day 2 was the day to explore London. 28,175 steps later we’d hit lots of landmarks. First stop was finding a good place for breakfast. Heading north and turning west on Stamford St we found Gail’s - a great find for healthy baked goods and good lattes.

From there we wandered over the Waterloo Bridge to Somerset House - recommended by our new best friend Michael. Calm & quiet with a large fountain in the middle, it had an interesting exhibit by black female artists. Definitely worth a visit.

Next stop was Gillian Lynne Theatre for tickets for Wed night. We ended up choosing the front row - only 25£ and thought it might be an interesting experience - then kept wandering - Trafalgar Square, Canada House, St James Park, Westminster, and Victoria Tower Gardens where Peter paused to stretch and ease the “pain in his butt.”
We headed back to the South Bank where there was lots of action - athletic young guys putting on a great “show,” plus a man creating sand sculptures. For dinner we stopped at the Mad Hatter near our place - calm ambience & good pub food - exactly what we needed after an active non stop day.

  • London Day 1 - Arriving

    28 августа 2023 г., Англия ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

AC 852 was only half an hour late - not bad for AC - and we actually arrived in Heathrow a bit early. Seems the only advantage of having a Nexis card is a shorter line - still had to take everything out. Glad we reserved seats - 19 A & C - so no issues with our carry on luggage.

The SIM card worked beautifully when we arrived in London - such a relief - and we were quickly able to catch the Piccadilly line to Green Park, then Jubilee line to Southwark. From there it was only a 5 minute walk to Ibis London Blackfriars. The hotel was fine - not elegant but a great location on the south bank.

By now it was about noon and we couldn’t check in until 3 so we headed out to explore - and stay awake. 24,500 steps later we’d wandered quite far - past Tate Modern Museum to Borough market - totally packed - then over the London Bridge and stopped at Prêt à Manger - relatively cheap & healthy - for lunch. This was fortuitous as we met our «  new best friend” Michael Riley.

He was an articulate soft spoken young « lad » who gave us lots of tips about London, and suggested we see his fav show - Crazy for You. He’d already seen it 3 times but gave us his coordinates and said to let him know if & when we’d be going.

From there we wandered to the Gillian Lynn Theatre to check out tickets, but it was closed due to the banker holiday, so we wandered through Covent Gardens and surrounding area, then stopped at Lowlander, a Belgium pub, for dinner - great choice. Heading back over the Waterlou Bridge the night scene was gorgeous.

  • Exploring About

    30 марта 2023 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Yesterday was again beautifully hot & sunny - 27C. Loved it. Great PB in the morning - got myself into a more advanced group and had to play up. Long rallies and good fun. 😀

In the afternoon I headed off on my bike in search of some of my fav murals, especially those with words.

Today was cool - 15 max - and super windy. Amazing how quickly the temperature changes here. The crazy PB ball with all its holes was sailing every which way. Certainly added to the challenge and the fun.

What I like about players here, they never use the wind as an excuse for bad shots, and don’t complain about it. I lucked out and played with 2 young guys, 1st year university, and their Dad. The kids were great, the Dad not so, but it was good fun.

In the afternoon I headed out on my bike again, this time in search of pics of Union Public where we saw Gigi & the Glow - I wanted to see the venue in daylight.

As an aside, one of my PB buddies knows Gigi - and yes, the men were right, Gigi is not young - she’s 50+ and has had every possible enhancement necessary to look like a Barbie doll. Her pink stilettos and mini skirt add to the image, but Sue is convinced she spotted cellulite through her fish net stockings. . . 😉

The only downside today is I stopped to watch girls beach volley at the Club and ran over a thorn. The tire instantly went totally flat. Have googled a nearby bike shop so will have to deal with that tomorrow.

Unfortunately, we head home tomorrow - but only for 4 days then we're off to St Augustine Florida to visit Daina & family for a week. Lots of fun adventures ahead with Reeve 5 and Van almost 2. Can't wait. . . .
