    Ravahei Smile overnight

    24–25 янв. 2025, Французская Полинезия ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Worst sleep of the trip so far. Only picture I have is of this cockroach that flew onto me in bed. No fans or AC, one other person in my room snored and smelled quite strongly so moved into the other dorm (which had no one in it) without telling owner cause everyone was asleep. Super loud dogs barking, roosters, cats, neighbours music all through the night. Owner wasn’t very pleased to find me in the other dorm in the morning, basically kicked me out and said I should pay double. Didn’t end up paying double but he was still annoyed.
I guess it was 2000F for a reason

    James Norman Hall Museum

    25 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Super quaint little museum which is a reconstruction of the house of James Norman Hall, the American author who wrote The Mutiny on the Bounty in the 30s. Beautiful building, nice and cool with AC, and the lady running it, Vivienne, was very welcoming and very knowledgeable. We chatted for a good hour about the museum and about life in TahitiЧитать далее

    Surfing!

    25 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Rented a surfboard for 2500F for two hours! Stood up on the board for 5 waves which is 4 more than I was hoping for! I think a surf lesson would do me well, need to learn more on the etiquette and which waves to catch and when to catch them, so many people out it was hard to navigate. And tired myself out going for the wrong waves at firstЧитать далее

Flight to Rangiroa! and RGI Airport

    26 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

After another night at Pension Te Miti, which was the nicest of the places I stayed, chatted w the other people staying there and returned the rental car at the airport. Flight and airline so small the checkin counter wasn’t open for another hour. Checked my backpack and took the pochette and day pack with me on board. So fun flying Air Moana on a little ATR 72! Pension Rangiroa Plage

    26–29 янв. 2025, Французская Полинезия ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Cute little place right on the water, I have the 4-bed dormitory to myself and it’s pretty empty here, for only 25 CAD a night! The owner Cindy is super nice and runs a little food stand in the evenings. Been having good sleeps and really enjoying the vibe of this island more than Tahiti. Hitchhiked from the airport to the place (would have been over an hour long walk 😳) and walked around the town on this side of the motu to get some groceriesЧитать далее

    Exploring Rangiroa by Bike

    27 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Rented a bike for the day for only 1000F (she gave me a discount cause it was already 11am, apparently that counts as a half day!) biked from one end to the other (~9km). Was going to take the “ferry” to the other inhabited motu but didn’t have time to make it back for the other things I wanted to see. Went for a swim at a small beach at the dock, swam for a bit and tested out my waterproof phone case! A little boy came up to me and called me over, wanting to play what he called “cache-cache” which consisted of us taking turns pushing eachother into the water haha. Stopped by a dive centre and excursion place on the way back to figure out plans for tmr! Lots of intermittent downpours that are so loud but only last about 5-10mins with some thunder. Lovely little island with very nice people, laid back island vibes. Ia ora na is the greeting everyone uses here, pronounced “yo-ra-na”

(got the first sunburn on the trip today, put sunscreen on everywhere except my arms, oops!)

    Gauguin’s Pearl Farm

    27 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Got a guided tour of Rangiroa’s pearl farm! Super interesting stuff, much more goes into it than I thought. Tahitian pearls are known for their darkness and different colours (blue and green etc) which is from the specific species of oyster that lives here. But the whole technique they use was perfected by one Japanese guy Kokichi Mikimoto in the 1800s, and the tahitians have perfected getting the colours how they want (Japanese pearls are really only shades of white). They take the mantle (mother-of-pearl producing part) of an oyster that has the desired colours in its shell (which are also produced by the mantle), take many small slices of it and basically graft it to other oysters. Only three species of oysters have what’s called a “pearl pocket” where the pearls eventually end up. They put a nucleus (perfectly round, made of crushed up mother-of-pearl) to start the pearl inside the pocket of an oyster, with the grafted piece of the mantle of the other oyster selected for its colour with it. Then that piece of mantle creates the pearls inside the pocket. And they harvest it after 6months to 2years, and can put in a bigger nucleus for a bigger pearl for the next time. A certified technician removes the pearls and decides if that oyster is producing good enough ones to implant a new nucleus. The pearls are then graded on size, colour, shine and defects. Super interesting with a really nice and informative guide. Who knew there was so much to know about pearls farming!Читать далее

    Cave de Vin de Rangiroa

    27 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Went to a wine tasting! Thought it was a tour but the vineyard is on a different motu of rangiroa that’s only accessible by boat, so tasting and some videos only! This wine is the only wine in the world made from grapes grown on an atoll, on coral-based soil. And French Polynesia’s only vineyard. Tasted four wines and rum made from sugarcane grown on the same plantation. The sweet wine, Mona Mona, is some of my favourite wine I’ve ever had. Unfortunately they don’t ship it to the rest of the world to sell, 95% stays within French Polynesia and 5% is sent to FranceЧитать далее

    Snorkelling!

    28 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Found the cheapest excursion from Dédé Excursions, which was a 3h snorkeling boat ride for 6000F! They pick you up at the place you’re staying, and take you out on the boat. There were two other Czech tourists who joined me.

Timing it so the tide was coming in, as the currents get very strong in the passes during the tide change, they took us out to Tiputa Pass. They would drop us off at one end of the pass, we would float down with the tide currents and they pick us up at the other end! All with a guide and floaty with us of course. We did this three times and then had time to explore the natural “aquarium” at one end on our own for about 20minutes.

Saw so many different fish, very colourful, two blacktip sharks, and dolphins! At some points the fish were all around us so close you could touch them. The dolphins (see video) we just saw from the boat, but apparently they’re only seen on certain days with good weather so we lucked out!

Travel Day: Fly, Bus, Ferry, Hitchhike

    29 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Hitchhiked from my place on rangiroa to the airport, and made it a nice 2.5h early for my flight haha (left enough time to walk there if didn’t catch a ride). The RGI airport is one open room, no walls, no security, you could bring anything on this plane! Checked my bag, got some lunch and ate it by the water, and watched the plane come in!

Landed in PPT, the next adventure was figuring out the bus system, which only has a barely functioning website to navigate. Caught the bus and made it to the Pape’ete waterfront! Walked to the ferry terminal and bought a ticket for the cheapest company’s last sailing of the day (there are three companies that run this route). Student price (50% off!) without even checking my ID!

Got poisson cru on the boat, and watched Mo’orea get closer and closer

The main way to get around Mo’orea cheaply and reliably is to hitchhike, so that’s what I did! (There’s one bus that goes around the island but it doesn’t have a set schedule and definitely had stopped running for the day by the time I got there). The first guy who picked me up was very nice, named Tauhia, and he had worked for 6 months in Powell River of all places, so knew the west coast of Canada well. Apparently he worked there (or on Texada?) cutting down trees for Christmas wreaths. He invited me to join him for a drink this weekend!

Got a second ride from a couple of girls who live here and the dropped me off at Painapaopao Backpackers!

    Painapaopao Backpackers

    29 янв.–2 февр. 2025, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Got here just before dark, with no room pre booked. Thankfully the neighbour helped me and said there was a bed left in the dormitory! I paid the owner in the morning as she had gone home for the night. A little bit more expensive than other accommodations at 3560F a night but such a nice hostel. Very welcoming vibe all the guests are friendly and talkative, well set up kitchen, and individual partitioning for each bed in the dormitory, so basically my own space. And mosquito nets around the beds which are much needed! There are lots of fruits, starfruit passionfruit bananas, free for the taking!

(Pronounced pine-a-popo. Paopao is the nearby town and there’s lots of pineapple plantations around here)

    Tour of Mo’orea

    31 января, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Signed up for a tour of Mo’orea’s must-sees in a 4wheel drive vehicle. Just me and two American ladies on the tour. We went up to the Belvedere Lookout, saw an archeological site of a Marae, went up to the Magic Mountain lookout (which really needed a 4x4 vehicle to get up to!), sampled some fruit jams and jellies and saw a pineapple plantation. A bit expensive for what it was but still interesting to see the points and learn from the guideЧитать далее

    Snorkel Day!

    1 февраля, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Rented a mask and snorkel from the hostel for only 300F! Walked to the public beach and swam a bit at a beach along the way. Lots of fish to see at the beach and fun things. Took a break to have some poke by the ocean, and had a couple more hours of snorkeling, saw some huge sea cucumbers but no sea turtles (Céline and Justine saw one at this beach the day before). Sunset Drink at the Sofitel

    1 февраля, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Céline and Justine got invited to check out a music and dance and fire performance at the Sofitel, another fancy resort. Their guide, Karen, for their 4x4 tour that day made all the costumes and her husband was a musician. Made it for happy hour this time! Much better vibe than the Hilton, and awesome performances, with a fire routine outside during a lightning storm behind, started raining as soon as they were done! Can only include two videos on here but really cool to watch, and chat with Karen.
Haha and the Americans from my tour were staying there too lol

Travel Day and Leaving PPT Airport

    2–3 февр. 2025, Французская Полинезия ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Lazy morning packing things up from the hostel, hitchhiked to the ferry terminal to catch the last ferry of the day back to Pape’ete. Got picked up by two local girls who said if I had more time I should try fafaru, a local favourite dish that consists of tuna marinated in fermented sea water and with fermented coconut milk drizzled on top (apparently very pungent and not something the tourists try, but the locals like it). I (unfortunately?) didn’t have time to try it, but maybe next time haha

Took the ferry over, walked around Papeete for a bit, before catching a taxi to the airport (missed the cheaper day fare by a few minutes!) then hung out at the airport until my flight to Auckland (which was scheduled to leave at 3am!)

Turns out the incoming plane was delayed by an hour and a half so the actual departure ended up being around 4:30am. So basically a night in the airport. Got a burger from the airport McDonald’s right before they closed at 10pm (driest Big Mac I’ve had). Found the only outlet to charge my phone behind some vending machines. Took a nap between 1am and 2am on the only non-armrest bench I could find (didn’t want to sleep on the floor as I saw a GIANT spider roaming around)

Groggily got on the plane around 4am and slept most of the flight in my extra thin exit row window seat with no window lol. Maybe pants would have been a good idea as the plane was kept frigid, but I checked my bag w more clothes oops

    AKL Airport

    4 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Made it to Aotearoa! Had to pick up my checked bag here and change terminals to domestic, but feels so nice to be back in a place with air conditioned airports and drinkable tap water haha. Another country, another McDonald’s. This cheeseburger tasted much more ‘beefy’ than the ones in Canada, not necessarily in a good way hmm

This was a later flight than I was originally booked on because of the delay of the first flight, but all went smoothly cause I booked directly with Air New Zealand. Window seat and nice views of the mountains of the South Island as we flew into Queenstown!

    Skippers Canyon Jetboat

    5 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

First New Zealand adrenaline adventure! Booked a jet boat ride for NZ$169! Jet boats are a Kiwi invention, with a high powered jet instead of a propeller, so they only need about 3 inches of water to work once they’re up to speed.

Picked us up in a little tour bus, saw a view point of the city, then down this single lane mining road from the late 1800s which was very narrow and very steep but so beautiful! Created cause gold was found in the area. Drove us down to the river where the boats were waiting, and we went up and down the river at super high speeds in super shallow water for about 30-40mins! The water was too shallow even for the rafters to be going at this time of year!
Saw an old bungee (bungy here) jump location and then headed back into town!

Met up with Sierra and Have A Car!

    6 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Met up with Sierra, Sophie’s friend who’s working here right now, who’s letting me borrow her car for a few days! Met up at a coffee shop/grocery store, forgot to take any photos together, but did see Jason Momoa (famous actor) at the grocery store!

Feels so weird driving on the left (wrong) side of the road! I’m trying to get used to it by always walking on the left on the sidewalks, but the mirrors and shift stick being opposite really trip me up!

The rest of today has been very chill, just getting things done on my phone like replying to people and booking things/accom for the next few days. Finally did some laundry!

    Drive to Milford Sound

    7 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Day trip to Milford Sound! Originally had a tour booked for a 5:45am departure but thankfully was able to change it to 8:30am without any fees! (Thanks Sophie for suggesting to just email them hehe)
Had a nice Estonian driver who was very informative on the drive there pointing out different points of interest and facts along the way. The bus had huge windows and a glass roof so ideal for sightseeing. And I got a window seat right at the front! A German girl, Alicia, sat beside me who was also solo traveling on her gap year after highschool and we chatted quite a bit on the tour!

There are so many sheep! And apparently the Homer Tunnel took 7 men 18years to complete, where as the rest of the road to Milford sound too just over 20!
