    Hamberg

    August 13, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Our first night in Hamburg was spent wandering around the harbour, Hafencity and Speicherstadt areas of Hamburg - a huge, industrial port on the Elbe. We finished up at Heritage, a rooftop bar overlooking the Außenalster lake in the centre of the city. The view from here was stunning, and the staff super friendly, especially when I knocked my pint over and beer and glass went everywhere 😳

The next morning was spent wandering the other districts, including the Reeperbahn, the Flohschanze flea market, the Fischmarkt/Altona waterfront, and Jungfernsteig, before retiring to the Hofbrauhaus for lunch and beers. For the first time out here, we shared a currywurst but also tried a 'Munich pizza' - pretzel bread, mustard base, cheese and toppings...it was delicious!

I was excited to visit Hamburg. After an evening and a morning here though, we felt we were pretty much done. It's a huge sprawling city but it didn't feel like it had a centre or a huge cultural heart. Compared to many other towns and cities we'd visited in Germany, it was rather disappointing. So we retired to the hotel to plan the final week before doing the Vierdaagse van de Ijzer. After much discussion, we're off to Dusseldorf tomorrow, on what has become a very German-centric tour!
