    Goslar

    August 12, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Rail replacement bus again today, to Vienenberg before catching a train to Goslar. Relatively painless, to be fair. We're actually headed to Hamburg, but we had to change at Goslar anyhow so stored our luggage and had a wander around this beautiful town. It felt like it was everything Wernigerode wanted to be - beautiful, windy streets with timbered, uneven houses, but it just was what it was. We wandered to the palace, which was the seat of the Holy Roman Empire. The old town and its mines are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it sits the other side of the East/West German border. Apparently Goslar was in the British-controlled zone of Germany after 1945 and was the site of a Displaced Persons Camp too.

We spotted a fabulous mews with handicraft shops including some brilliant glasswork, before a quick pint and a train onto Hamburg via Hannover.
