  • Sitnyakovo long run

    February 16, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Coming down from the top, we ran the Musala Path on tired legs, although I didn't stack it this time. We came down and went to Deva for pancakes before trying a new run - up the 4 man to Sitnyakovo, and down three consecutive blues. It was a superb run although sadly I missed the last lift with Kev to run it one final time before the day was over. Up to the Rila Terrace for Apres Ski beers before walking back to the hotel.Read more

  • Markudjik Gondola

    February 17, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

Early morning start up the gondola this morning with mum and Kev. Beautiful views as we went up the mountain, a far cry from yesterday. We ran the Suhar Green first before mum and Kev departed for ski school, whilst Ben and I ran the Markudjik 2 blue loop up the chair lift. We tried a new cafe today, which had fabulous views but rubbish service! We bumped into mum and Kev and did another blue loop up the chairlift, before running a couple more using the double button lift. By this point our feet and legs were absolutely on fire, so we braved the 10km Musala Path down at speed to get to the Silver Fox for a pint and some food.Read more

  • Sitnyakovo Blue/Red

    February 17, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

After a restorative pint at the Silver Fox, we left in disappointed having had no food as our order got forgotten. Nonetheless, the hour's rest for our feet was welcome and we mustered two more runs down from the top of Sitnyakovo to the Iglika with Kev joining us for the final run. The final run was rather more eventful than planned however with Kev and I stopped to run the bit of red above the Iglika but stopping one turn to early and ended up going all the way down the Baraki 2 red without realising until we reached the bottom. Apres Ski in the Rila Terrace before walking back to the hotel.Read more

  • Rila red

    February 18, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

After our accidental jaunt down the Rila Red last night, we all headed up the Sitnyakovo 4-man, with Kev, Ben and I planning the long blue/red down, whilst mum took the King's Cottage Way. Ben headed down Sitnyakovo 2 Blue, whilst Kev and I met him at the intersection skiing half of the Sitnyakovo Red 1. From there, we went down the Baraki Blue to the top of the Rila before braving it down...all three of us with no one falling! We managed a quick run up the 6-man express to the Baraki Blue and Rila Red again before meeting mum for coffee at the bottom.Read more

  • Sitnyakovo Rock

    February 18, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 0 °C

We left mum and Kev to ski school, whilst Ben and I went up the 4-man for a couple of runs down from the Sitnyakovo. We both ran the Sitnyakovo Red 3 without disaster and came over the Sitnyakovo Red 2 to join the long downhill run too. Stopping for a final time at Silver Fox, we then went back up to Sitnyakovo and had a beer and some fries in the sunshine over the Rila National Park...sunshine, but biting wind and freezing temperatures! We ran the Sitnyakovo Blue 1 a few times on the button lift before mum and Kev joined us for a long run down, finishing with Kev and I going down the black Cherveno Zname without doing ourselves an jnjury! We ran the triple blue route twice more before returning our kit for the final time and walking wearily back to the hotel for a final night's sleep before Sofia tomorrow.Read more

  • A walking tour of Sofia

    February 19, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

We packed and had breakfast at the hotel before getting a 10.30 bus to Sofia for a walking tour. The 90-minute drive was rather more interesting in the sunshine and we saw the mountains and beautiful forests as we drove our tour guide gave us a super potter history of Bulgaria from Byzantine times, before we disembarked at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

We had time to wander insider before walking down the yellow brick road past the Parliament building, former royal residence, ancient ruins of the old city and presidential building. The guide was superb, laying out the history of the city and its place in wider empires and showing how it developed up to today. The underground open museum of ruins seems far more developed than when we last visited and is remarkably intact.

  • Let loose in Sofia

    February 19, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Having left the guide for some free time, we walked to a covered market which was rather closed, so we cut across to the city's hot springs. And they really were hot! Apparently known for their healing properties, people were filling up huge bottles of water from them. We then headed to the highly recommended archaeological museum, which had superb exhibits found across Bulgaria with fantastic English commentary. The Treasure Room housed some wonderful exhibits of jewellery and gold, and the cavernous main hall had huge statues and frescos alongside smaller exhibits. Mum and Kev both made a scene - one leaving the museum by accident and the other setting off an alarm!

We walked back towards the main cathedral to grab some food and a drink before heading home. Back on the yellow brick road, we had an absolutely superb burger stop at Boom Burgers & Booze, before heading to the rooftop bar in Sense Hotel next door overlooking the whole of the city in the beautiful late afternoon sunshine. Then...on to the airport!
