Sooooo nice to have my lieffie here! :)

We took it easy but walked a lot anyway. We drinked a beer, eat a burger in the arrea San Blas. Also, we met 3 friends of mine on the street, which was funny for Nacho to see who I met during my period here.

We went to a palace of the Inca period called: Coricancha. Which means: the golden house.

At 6 we took a cake and coffee with my host family and at 7 we went to our hotel to relax.

  • Somebody was tired

    5 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The trip madrid-cusco was not the easiest Nacho had. After a hard week in Cph, he wait until 3am of Friday night in Madrid airport because some technical problems in the plane. He was neither lucky with his seat, two crying babies behind and one fat woman next to him (she was so fat that she need an extension for her belt!!) So Nacho didn't sleep so much and need to run in Lima to catch the next flight to Cusco, and he did it in time!

We had a nice day in Cusco but we both were smashed. We went to bed at 20:15 and woke up at 8:00 :) Now he is fresh!

  • Inca jungle tour: trekking

    8 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

This was a really, really hard day. We woke up at 6 and walked 24km through the jungle, crossing rivers and mountains. We climbed around 1000 meters. It was hard for the legs and at the same time 30 degrees.

We saw beautiful things and our tour guide (Jimmy) was amazing. He showed us so many things, animals, plants and explained about the Inca history.

We walked 2 hours of the classic Inca trail to Machu Picchu. This rail was made to get to Machu Picchu. The people brought messages through this trail. Iris was really scared cause some moments it was only 40cm wide and a really deep cliff on the side.

We were in a group of 6. Tommy (a 24 year old guy from Australia), Ryan (same, he was eating coca leaves non stop) and Whitney (also from Australia). There was also Frankie the Adventurer. He is 74 years old and travels all around the world. It was extremely tough for young and sporty people and this granny just rocked it! Haha

  • Machu Picchu

    9 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

It was not an easy day but it was the best ending for an amazing jungle trekking tour.

We need to wake up at 4am, walking up for 3km (climbing 400m) in high jungle weather, with a high humidity and high temperature. In the moment that we arrived, it started a thunderstorm and raining a lot but everything was worthy to learn more about the Incas, their amazing culture and their integration with the nature.

Tomorrow will come a new adventure, keep on going!! (Nacho)

  • Rainbow mountain

    10 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Rainbow mountain, known as Apu winicunca by the peruvians, is one of their sacred mountain and one of most beautiful place we have visited. The hike to the top was no joke, we started in 4000m and went up to 5200m!!! The weather is constantly changing, from sunny and warm that you asked to yourself, why to carry so many clothes?, to really cold with wind, snow and hail!

It was tough, especially after 4 days of hiking (100km in total), our feet where tired. Luckily Iris did not had that many problems with her problem foot. We did had huge problems with the altitude. Big headache, dizzy.. We chew coca leaves all the time and sniffed some kind of flower liquid to open our lungs. (haha now it sounds like we have been using drugs, but don't worry)

We arrived back home at 7 and are now ready to drink some beers and watch the match Peru - New Zealand!

  • Arequipa

    13 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We arrived after a 10 hour night bus trip to the city of Arequipa. Arequipa is just behind the Andes and totally surrounded with volcanos. Also, there is a tectonic plate next to the city so earthquakes are common. Anyways, we arrived in the morning, feeling dirty and a bit tired and came to an amazing hotel.

This hotel is so luxurious compared to what we had last week. Amazing bed, perfect service and finally fruit for breakfast. It was great, clean and modern. We went for a free city tour and got to know more about the city. It looks like a Spanish city, lots of colonial buildings, beautiful flowers and clean streets. The temperature is great, 25 degrees more or less. Totally different from Cusco. Also, people speak Spanish instead of Quechua haha.
In the afternoon we went to the hotel for a siesta and booked some tours. We went for a walk in a really nice neighborhood called: Yanahuara.

  • Monasterio Santa Catalina

    13 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

This is a beautiful monastery in Arequipa, one of the biggest of south America! (20.000 square meters)

It is dated from the 16th century and build by the Spanish. There are still living nons here. There is clearly Spanish influence since all the street names are cities from Spain. The monastery could host 450 nons at the same time.

Our guide was a really stiff lady and not so funny but she could explain a lot about the history of how the nons lived.

Offcourse on the side we drinked 'Chicha' a red corn, low alcoholic drink. Invented by the Incas.Okumaya devam et

  • Cañon del Colca

    15 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

We woke up at 3am(yes, so early) to take a bus from Arequipa to an area called Colca valley. We passed through an area 4800m above sea level were was snow. Once in the view point of "la Cruz del condor"we could see a lot of condors flying above us, it was spectacular!! The andinian condors are the biggest bird in the world, they can reach 3m wingspan and fly over 6000 m above sea level.

After that, we ate an amazing Peruvian ceviche and took a bus to Puno, a city next to the lake Titicaca. On the way we passed through a natural reserve where we saw flamengos (didn't know they could live in cold weather above 3800m) and a wild vicuña. This animal has the finest wool in the world (even better than cashimire). And it is not domesticated by the people, so we were really lucky to see it.

You can see the difference between a Llama, Alpaca and Vicuña, by several things. The neck of the Vicuña is shorter and more leaning towards the front, also the ears all smaller. The colour is always the same, light brown and a white belly. The eyes are big and black.

  • Lago Titicaca

    15 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

We woke up really late today, at 6:00 (haha). We went by boat over the lake, just a small part though, cause this lake is huge.

Lake Titicaca is the biggest lake of South America and the highest lake of the world. The lake is 3800 meters high. It is on the border of Bolivia and a small part of this lake is in Bolivia. The capital of the region is Puno.

We visited the floating islands. To create this islands the local use the roots of Acha (kind of big and strong grass) and tight them together with natural ropes. Every 15 days they need to put a extra layer of Acha so it stays in good condition. Their houses and boats are made of the same material. They do not speak Spanish but Aymara here. This families live really primitive and work in communities. They catch fish and trade it in the land for potatoes and corn. In each island can live up to 6 families. The community in total consists of 120 islands and 1000 persons.

We also visit another island a the lake, this one was natural, We made a trekking there and eat trout fish for lunch, which was made by a local family and catched in this lake. It tasted great.

  • Traveling

    15 Kasım 2017, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Tonight we watched the game peru-new Zealand. It is something big here, there is not another thing on the TV and everyone speaks about it for the last week. The last time they were on a world cup was 36 years ago. Luckily and after suffering a lot, Peru won the second game and qualified for the world cup in Russia!! The city is crazy, like if they won the world cup! Way too much haha.. the government even gave all the people a day of for tomorrow!

We saw the game with Adela and Johannes. We met them yesterday on the bus to puno and we spend all day with them today in lake Titicaca. She is Spanish and he is Dutch, so we have a lot in common :). They are around 37 years old, but really open minded and friendly. We speak a mix of Spanish, English and Dutch.

This is one of the coolest things of traveling, meet new people to learn about their culture, habits, language, etc.. we love it!

  • Bolivia

    17 Kasım 2017, Bolivya ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We are so sorry that we have been so disconnected from the world the last couple of days!

Thursday we arrived to La Paz, really late in the night. You can see that Bolivia is a poor country. There are barely paved roads. We didn't knew that we would arrive so late, we took lunch at 12:00 and arrived at 23:00 without any food! We didn't had snacks with us haha.. oopsie!

Then we arrived and since La Paz is a big city we decided to go straight to the hotel, cause it was night and probably dangerous.

So we went to sleep without food, diet day for us haha!

The next day we visited the city and did a free tour. There is a big Dutch community in La Paz, quite funny. Friday night we flew to Uyuni, the south of Bolivia. We met with two friends of Iris, Juliette and Roos. They are from her study period in Utrecht. This picture is of Saturday morning before the tour starts.
