Day 1 Southampton

So here we are again, a cheeky week up to Oslo and back with our favourite cruise line Princess. A busy week leading up to us going but worthwhile. Managed to finally get the Capri running sweet before we left which was great and a load off my mind, all other jobs for the shop, work and at home we’ve ticked off between us.
An early start this morning for the trip down to Southampton. By the time we arrived the weather was glorious. A number of departures today, P&O Iona and Arvia, MSC Virtuosa and us on the Sky Princess. The power of Facebook showed us the guy who trained me to detail was on Iona (great to chat Clive) and a mates son was on Virtuosa (sorry Hadrian didn’t know what he looked like so couldn’t wave 😂). It’s a small world.
Once on board we were up to the buffet and treated ourselves to the tremendous buffet whilst we were discussing how lucky we were to be back again. I did manage three courses for lunch but not in the correct order, started off with a nice main course mixed grill, followed by a couple of lemon danish pastries before I realised leak and potato soup was on so I finished with that. Our cabin was ready quite quickly and it is simply stunning, we booked a mini suite as it was for our silver wedding anniversary, the highlights are a sofa to fall asleep on and a bath !! It’s at the back of the ship which we like, it’s lower than we normally go for but we do like it.
The boss unpacked us whilst I checked that sofa out, yep it’s fine I’m pleased to report. We had a wander around the ship but we are quite familiar with it as I think this our 3rd or 4th time sailing on her.
More food and a lovely drink at the back of the ship. Early night tonight as it was an early start dnd s busy week.Weiterlesen

Day 2 At Sea

A brilliant nights sleep for us both last night and a steady start to today. A lovely sunny day as we cruised up towards Norway, Quite deceptive, the breeze was fresh, well when I say fresh I think it was likely enough to make the shorts I’ve brought with me redundant and the jumpers may well be on overtime !!
We went upstairs for breakfast, cake was involved obviously. It was very busy but we still managed to get seated ok. Had a wander down to the atrium which is midship. I ordered myself a mug and a water bottle - I was waiting to come in here to do it as the mugs are a nice size. Pictures of both my classic cars on them !! We then wandered out and sat at the back of the ship, it was quite warm when the sun wasn’t behind a cloud, but that was a tad intermittent!!
We did very little this afternoon, nodded in and out consciousness whilst watching a bit of TV before wandering back to the Atrium to watch a circus act. Was actually quite funny. There does appear to be a larger number of children on here than normal, hence the no hot tub use as yet. Formal night tonight do normally around 5pm the decks are clear, not today !! So we headed down to the theatre to watch Rock Opera. Everything’s a bit different, the theatre would usually be packed, it was very quiet. The show though. Brilliant. I’m not normally one for the shows but it was very very good.
Slipped up to the back of the ship for a tea and a cake before attempting the hot tub as you do, success on both counts. Sat in the hot tub as the sun went down, Mamma Mia came on the big screen, half watched it but had a good ole sing a long. But eebejeesus when we got out of the hot tub, dark, north heading and getting out of a tub of hot water - was bloody Baltic !! So down to the room, quick change and back out for a late dinner / supper.
A great relaxing day, just back at the room having a cuppa and some chocolate, patio doors open listening to the sea as we sail on towards our first dock tomorrow.Weiterlesen

Day 3 Kristiansand

Good morning all, we have arrived in Kristiansand in Norway this morning. We had a bit of a wobble on overnight as we zipped along towards our destination, a tad choppy but nicely choppy. A glorious morning weather wise which was a little unexpected. We were prepared for a very mixed week thanks to Bill Gates and his weather app. We docked to beautiful clear blue skies, bright sunshine and temperatures getting towards 20 degrees throughout the day. We’ll take that.
Breakfast on the open deck with views out towards the sea, superb as usual and the obligatory cake for me !! We were off the ship around 10am, we have been here once before but had forgotten how stunningly beautiful it was. It really is a stunning place, a lovely walk in to the town round the harbour and through the park. Lots of boats moored up, a mixture of grassed areas, views out to sea and interesting buildings. A random piano placed on the harbour side where anyone can just stop and play. We were talking to a couple who lived here and they say students often stop by and play and they are mostly male.
The town was equally as nice, very pretty, clean and very lively. A church in the centre of the town was the key focal point with a lovely square full of restaurants, cafe bars and a small local market. We sat down for a drink and just took in the atmosphere. Sharon bought a pair of thick wool knitted socks !!
A steady meander back to the ship and a spot of lunch on the open deck. It was quite a lengthy wander we had so it was only an hour or two before we were setting off heading to our furthest northerly point of Oslo, we were out on deck for the sail away, beautiful sunshine, not a cloud in sight but a slight nip in the air.
We spent the evening wandering round the ship, football on the big screen and all tubs full, so we wandered down to the atrium. Sharon managed to cause much discussion in the lift as she’d helped herself to some popcorn whilst out on the deck and was eating it in the lift, result of that 3 out of four people on the lift went back up, for popcorn !! Silent disco in the atrium, very funny to watch
Another great day !!Weiterlesen

Day 4 Oslo

The approach to Oslo is through a very lengthy fairly narrow approach which we learned today is called the Oslo fjord. We picked the pilot up at 2am this morning before docking around 7am. Sharon wax up early as she likes to see the approach, I usually enjoy about 10 mins on the way out before I nod off.
Again another glorious day, very lucky with the weather so far., shorts not been made redundant as yet. We docked at a different berth today so the approach to town was slightly different. Unfortunately Sharon managed a fall on concrete quayside, managed to scrape her knee and elbow but we returned to the ship and cleaned her up. She was a bit shaken but fine now - I’ll not make a Dr 😂😂
After the cleanup and a bit of a sit down, we decided to venture in to the town. A lovely modern town with a really buzzing atmosphere. We decided not to go up to the mountain today and we just ambled around the town. Stopped in a Scottish bar for a drink in the town itself which was very nice. We saw a side to the town we don’t normally see and again it was lovely. It’s quite a short dock as all aboard is 3.30pm but it was enough for us to see what we wanted and enjoy the port.
We had a late lunch and I realised that disaster had struck this morning and I omitted to have cake with my breakfast. I rectified the mistake with two lemon danishes after lunch which I’m sure makes up for the omission. The sail away is back down the reasonably narrow straight so we decided to sit on our balcony as we left and just enjoyed the cruise back south towards Denmark. We were treated to a couple of acrobats on jet skis who followed us out for about half an hour, they were quite entertaining, riding the waves with only one leg attached to the jetski, doing doughnuts and simply buggering about. They did earn a huge round of applause from the ship before taking a bow and turning back. Then you wouldn’t believe it but a dolphin 🐬 popped out of the sea and was playing right between the 2 jet skis as we left. A very entertaining sail-away. The captain wasn’t amused with our jet skis entertainers though. He was most put out with the noise they were making and that his announcement was delayed by 30 minutes because of them !!
Decided to try the hot tub tonight, success, we had an hour or so watching the sun disappear as we sailed out of the fjord, I would say, it was quite a bit warmer than the other night as it didn’t make you think you were going to die when we got out. We were chatting to a guy from Houston, interesting fella, been around the world a bit originally from South America.
Beef wellington for dinner tonight, Sharon had bits and bobs of all sorts really, rice, Thai mince, stir fried noodles, spinach - I’ll just stop there 😂😂. It was Kate getting dark tonight, around 9.15 when the light finally faded.Weiterlesen

ReisenderSo much to fit in in one day, I am exhausted reading it. Hope Sharon is over her stumble and so overwhelmingly grateful that you have upped your cake quota to normal. Xx

Day 5 Copenhagen

A different day today. We docked in to Copenhagen at 9am with partly cloudy skies but temperature reaching 20 degrees. It wasn’t to be the tourist type day we’d usually expect as we went to say our goodbyes to our very good friend Jens. I met Jens in Copenhagen 16 years ago when I came to work here and tought him what I knew (very little but we’ll leave that there). We instantly hit it off and became very good friends. We shared anniversaries and birthdays with each other and have both stayed at each others place a number of times. Whenever we docked at Copenhagen he would meet us off the ship and we would spend the day together, something that was planned for this visit. Sadly only a few short weeks ago he called me to say he was poorly and unlikely to be around. Sharon and I took a flight and we came here to see him and Lena. We had a wonderful time even though we were only here for a day. Despite being poorly he was still his witty, funny and friendly self.
We got the sad news a couple of weeks ago and our meal today was not to be. However a last minute change to our itinerary meant we docked in Copenhagen today on the day of his funeral. Totally unprepared, holiday clothes only, no idea where we were going, we set off this morning. A bus from the ship to the city, a metro from the city to the airport and a car hired (only just - 4 car hire places with no cars) and Sharon navigating us to Koge. I mean, it was 50/50 whether we’d make it to Koge, same again whether we’d find a church and bonus points if there was a funeral and it was Jens. We knew we wouldn’t make the service as time just didn’t permit but we did make it, it was Jens and he was just coming out of church as we arrived. He was nearly getting loaded in to the back of a Peugeot 2008 as the very wrong last turn took us up the church drive instead of in to the car park, fortunately the funeral director put us right very swiftly !!
We went back to the bowling club that Jens setup in 2012 and lots of people were very pleased we’d made it and quite a few remembered us. We were made to feel so welcome and sat with his daughter. A couple of people from work were there and after a bit of memory jogging it all came flooding back. Everything fell in to place and the day couldn’t have worked out better. We drove back up to the airport, and managed our way back to the ship admirably.
We didn’t do much this afternoon, managed to get back on the ship before it rained and we watched a film called “The Amateur”. It was a good film, we did go out on deck and experienced the sail away.Weiterlesen

Day 6 Skagen

Oh what a beautiful morning !! An early dock in to Skagen (pronounced Skåne). Sadly we missed the approach due to our peepers not opening until 9am this morning. The sun was shining and the forecast was wrong yet again, another shorts and t-shirt day which was wonderful. Breakfast on the open decks and I was surprised when Janet from the omelette and special egg stand remembered me from the last cruise last year !! I’d sort of recognised her but when I ordered my omelette she asked if I was on the med cruise last year !! Made my morning !!
A steady start to the morning before disembarking and having a wander around the town, Skagen is the most northern tip of Denmark and fishing is quite big here. We elected not to go to the beach today as we’ve been a couple of times before so we just ambled around the town. We had a drink in a lovely cafe which is on the road out to the sea. Here the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet and if we’d gone to the beach you can stand in the sea with a foot in each. It’s a very picturesque town and not very big do you can imagine it’s quite busy when a cruise ship docks. Sharon has been wanting a Nordic woolly jumper and we found said article in a small local shop.
We were back on board mid afternoon so took advantage of the hot tub. Had a few little humans come in but they were good as gold. Sat soaking up the sun in the hot tub was so relaxing and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a late lunch again out on the decks. We’ve hardly been inside this holiday, making the most of the outdoors and the exceptional weather. We have been spoiled.
Snails on the menu tonight, obvs not for me, just a few sandwiches for me tonight. Sharon did try an oyster, I was quick to point out I’d got a headache !!
We are finishing the evening off on our balcony as we are being treated to a fairly impressive thunder and lightening show. It’s started to rain, quite heavily and our balcony has little shelter. Sharon’s been trying to take pictures of the lightening to no avail, she flattened the battery on her phone so moved on to mine, I’ve just deleted 174 photos of nothing but black 😂😂.
So we’re heading back towards the UK now, day at sea tomorrow and the forecast is cooler and cloudier, but to be honest that’s what it’s been all week, and it’s been wrong. I do feel the jeans may get an airing tomorrow though !!
Ps, last photo is Sharon’s attempt at a lightening shot 😂😂Weiterlesen

Day 7 At Sea

A steady day today as we make our way back down the North Sea via Skeggy to Southampton. Still in shorts although the weather has cooled off a bit so the addition of a jumper required during the day and not just in the evening.
Light breakfast this morning on the deck, I did this as I knew I’d be on the ship all day and probably wouldn’t stop eating. After breakfast we wandered down to the Atrium which was very entertaining. We ended up being there pretty much until lunchtime. Firstly there was a crew versus passengers game of giant jenga on but to spice it up they had to identify songs and if the team did it correctly, the other side had to go. Was very funny, the cruise director very confident and very good - but they lost and the passengers won !! Next the dancers came on and did a little show and finally, quite a few if the staff came out for a big thank you. It was brilliant, not really seen that before. Every single member works so hard, is always friendly and always has a smile. Brilliant morning.
Off up for a cuppa and a cake on the open deck, Sharon had ice cream from the little cream man who kept tooting his horn on his mobile stall. Sunshine and cloud and bit fresher than we’ve been used to but still ok. The weather started to cloud over a bit later on in the afternoon so we decided to try and get in the hot tub. The little humans in there that weren’t as well behaved as the one yesterday but it was ok, stayed in for a couple of hours and then the Rolling Stones concert came on, not my thing but Sharon enjoyed it. Shortly after getting on it went black, and it threw it down, just as we were passing Skeggy (photo attached - with windmills). Not an hour later the sun was back although mixed in with the cloud.
All packed now (thanks to the boss), just off up to the decks for a drink and maybe a wee cake. I’d like it noting I’m still in shorts and T-shirt, absolutely amazed myself. I’ve not used my coat or hat once this holiday. The captain must have flowed right down as it’s 8:20pm here and we’re just passing Dover. Although we’re in the Dover Straight, the ships time is one hour ahead of UK time, we put our clocks back an hour when we go to bed. Good thing really as we have to be off the ship by 7:30am and we have to get breakfast in, so it’ll be an early start.
Thanks for following us, we started this blog when we first started cruising in 2006 when communication home was a lot different and very difficult. It was a way of Sharon’s mum and Dad knowing where we were and what we were up to as they always wanted to know. After losing John we weren’t going to do it any longer but so many people asked us to and like to know where we are and what we’re doing, Sadly Hazel won’t see the blog but we do send her a postcard of pictures every day so she knows where we are. We also turn these into a book so we have a keepsake of our adventures. It’s been a blast, until the next one Au Revoir 🛳️
Sorry, last minute amendment due to another lightening storm off the Uk south coast. Sharon got a picture of the lightening behind the cloud, sheet lightening and I’ve been instructed to add the photo. It’s the last pic and the lightening is the lightning the right just in case you couldn’t tell 😂😂 !!Weiterlesen
