    Room with a view

    September 29, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Finally arrived very tired after a day of stressful train travel to the station. An Uber to the hostel, checked in, up to the room only to find Goldilocks had been in before us. Back downstairs and had to wait over half an hour for it to be cleaned. Soooooo tired. Finally horizontal and the room was lovely.Read more

  • Eclectic!

    September 29, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Once the site of the Jewish Ghetto, the historic Jewish Quarter became dilapidated in the decades following World War II, after the deportation of 10,000s Jews.
Szimpla began as a small experiment, a bar set up in an abandoned building offering affordable drinks for the young and creative crowd in Budapest, it became a bohemian hub after the crumbling building got spruced up with vintage furniture.Read more

  • Bougie Budapest

    September 29, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Walked through the Pest side of Budapest. Huge buildings, quite grand, made our way to the Ruin bars beautiful and bohemian. Found a guy playing fabulous classical guitar 😍. Had some drinks and terrible chips then on to the Rudas baths via a pair of St Bernards. Amazing! Beautiful building dating back to 1571. A variety of pools, saunas and steam rooms all at varying temperatures, we tried them all, even going into the cold water plunge pool. Rounded it off with a massage each ahhhhhh. A walk back towards home stopping at the Scrotum bar for a quick drink then a curry. Finished the evening with a g&t at the Maverick bar. Fabulous day.Read more

  • Last morning in Budapest

    September 30, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

A warm and sunny day. Breakfast in the hotel and then a long walk all the way along the riverside north to see the Shoes by the Danube a sculpture installation from 2005 created to memorialize the deaths of some 20,000 Jews in WW2 who were told to line up on the side of the river, remove their shoes (as they had value) and they were then shot and fell into the water. A very emotive artwork.
On our way there we stopped at the market hall, a vast space selling absolutely everything you can imagine, from sausages to shoes, handbags to honey.
Some of the buildings are beautiful with ornate roof tiles and art nouveau influences.
Another sushi lunch in a tiny cafe then the long walk back, pick up bags and head to the train station!

  • Kelenfoeld station

    September 30, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Crossing our fingers that the train will be on time!
It was but we got on the wrong carriage, only the last one goes to Zagreb! Managed to change in time and currently sitting at a remote station in Croatia, it's dark outside, we've uncoupled from the other carriages... I've seen films like this...😳Read more

  • Train from Budapest to Zagreb.

    September 30, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The journey was on a very old train... a while in, we discovered we were in the wrong carriage as only the back one was going to Zagreb. Swapped seats smartish to slightly more updated carriage. Had a very odd English couple sitting in front of us, he was 40 something, not giving a good vibe, all leather jacket and shaven head. She looked about 25 and was very dilled up. They argued a lot in hushed tones. Every time she got up from her seat she took a large holdall with her and he didn't leave her side. We got stopped about 20 minutes from Zagreb station by the police boarding, they spent about 45 minutes on the train while we were at a standstill.. the couple had got off the station before....Read more

  • Lunch on a rainy day

    October 3, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

A wander round the city looking for somewhere to eat in the rain. It took an hour. Ended up in a traditional looking place with Sian Lloyd on the next table. She was rude and entitled, how very sad. However, great service, lovely wine and really good food so a good choice.Read more

  • Ice creams and cbd

    October 3, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

We bought ice creams after lunch to try and distract us from the torrential rain... His under a portico to eat it and the man from the booze shop came out and offered us a sip of blueberry liquor... nice. We then found the CBD shop selling gummies, bud and more and got ourselves some relaxing CBD sweets to chew on. Left the shop and walked into the middle of a tour group circle 😳.Read more

  • Puppetey museum

    October 3, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

This was at the castle, a tiny museum with some beautiful puppets... quite why Loz's doppelganger was in formaldehyde I'm not sure...
We saw puppets with penises and puppets with bullocks, it was quite enlightening! That aside there were some beautiful pieces.Read more

  • Weird sculpture

    October 4, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Saw this odd sculpture that runs the length of an alleyway in the drain... lots of twisted faces that gradually melt as you reach the end.. No idea what it's about!

  • An evening stroll

    October 4, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

A stroll through Ljubljana for a very mediocre dinner. People don't smile much here from the off, some will warm, others don't. The place is quite buzzing tonight as it's a bit wet but not hammering it down like yesterday.Read more

  • Train food

    October 6, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Hmmmm expensive food and drink on the train. Falafel wrap was quite nice but Loz's hot ham and cheese roll looked like someone had sneezed into it 🤢
