Arrived in Lockerbie this afternoon to stay a few days with mum. Lovely evening walk around Eskrigg Nature Reserve. So many birds, love this place.

  • Bressay

    June 7, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We took a 15 minute ferry from Lerwick to the island of Bressay, where we are staying at the marina for a few nights. Beautiful. Then a cycle ride to the lighthouse and bbq fish for tea, what a brilliant first day in Shetland.Read more

  • Boat tour to Noss Island

    June 8, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

What an incredible experience. Two hours out to see seabirds nesting on the cliffs of Noss in their thousands. Gannets, guillemots, razorblls and kittiwake. Then feeding the gannets on the way back to see them dive and catch the fish in midair. What a memorable day.Read more

  • Walk on Bressay

    June 9, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We walked to the north of the island to a community called Ginnista. We walked along the road, then through the cemetery to the inlet below the cemetery. Then across the heath back to the road. The bird song was incredible- curlews, ring necked plover, red shanks and so many, many more. What a wonderful walk. Cloudy weather but less wind.Read more

  • Noss Nature Reserve

    June 10, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We got the bikes out today and cycled to Noss. Once we have left the bikes we walked down the hill to the jetty and one of the wardens brings a small inflatable boat to get you and take you over to the island. After the briefing we headed to the Noup of Noss to see the gannets, puffins, skuars and guillemots. These are the cliffs we saw from the Noss boat. A fabulous day with beautiful sunny weather and the birds were awesome, especially the puffins.Read more

  • Mousa

    June 11, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

We are now heading south. We are staying overnight next to the jetty for the ferry to Mousa, an RSPB nature reserve. The ferry leaves at 10.30pm for a 2 hour tour of the island to see the storm petrels come into roost.Read more

  • Storm petrels

    June 12, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

At 10.30pm last night we took a boat trip to an island nature reserve looked after by the RSPB. After a 15 minute crossing we then walked to the brooch, which is about 2,500 years old. They don't really know why they were built. As we waited in the half light, it is never fully dark in Shetland at this time of year, bat like things started to flit around the walls and disappear into the walls. These are the storm petrels coming home to roost. We watched them mesmerised for over an hour, before going back in the boat and to the van in the car park to bed about 1am. A magical experience.Read more

  • Sumbugh Head

    June 12, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

We drove to Sumburgh Head, where there is a lighthouse. But the cliffs on all sides are full of nesting seabirds-kittiwakes and guillemots, but the star of the show are the puffins. They are beautiful. Today was very windy and we watched in awe as they flew out to sea and came back to land, usually very gracefully. Now parked up at the Ness Marina not far overlooking the airport.Read more

  • Scatness, Jarlshof and West Voe beach

    June 13, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Another wonderful day here in Shetland. We walked over 20,000 steps today. We are staying near the airport so we had to walk across the runway. Security have to give the ok and then you can go but no stopping along the way! Takes about 5 minutes to get across.
Found an amazing beach to go paddling- I will swim before we leave. Visited Jarlshof..a neolithic settlement, very interesting. Lots of birds and beautiful weather.

  • St. Ninians

    June 14, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We have arrived at St.Ninians. You might recognise it from the Shetland series on tv. Stunning place, a walk around the island until the fog descended and had a chilly dip in the sea. It was freezing but felt wonderful afterwards.Read more

  • Shetland Tea

    June 15, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Woke up at St. Ninians to mist and fog, which cleared a bit before we left.
We then went to a Shetland Tea. Each little community here has a hall and each Sunday one or more of them will hold a Sunday tea. Everyone is welcome, you turn up, pay your money and sit with the locals or whoever else is around. It was packed out with people queuing for seats. This was a father's day special with Soup and Sweet aswell as local musicians playing. It was lovely tattie and vegetable soup and rhubarb crumble and custard. Rhubarb is a bit of a Shetland thing apparently.
We are now at a new campsite beside a Loch listening to the curlews bubbling, wonderful.

  • The Shetland Bus

    June 16, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

We are staying near Scalloway for the next 2 nights. This morning we walked along the road into Scalloway and visited the museum. We learnt all about The Shetland Bus - an operation during the war where small boats from Shetland took agents and arms over to Norway and bought back refugees who settled here in Shetland. Norway is closer to Shetland than the rest of the UK. A fascinating and moving story.Read more

  • Yell and Unst

    June 17, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

A wonderful day today. We have moved further north, taken 2 ferries and visited 2 islands. We are now staying on Unst. Everything here is the .....furthest north.
Staying on an inlet and the view is stunning. They have an honesty shop on the Quay and one of the things it sells is homemade rhubarb and banana jam. It is delicious !Read more

  • Hermaness Nature Reserve

    June 19, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Another amazing day. A visit to the Hermaness nature reserve, which ends at the Muckle Flugga lighthouse and the most northerly point you can go in the UK. Gannetary was mind blowing..the smell hits you before you see it. Thousands of them on the cliffs, which are so high. Had a few wobbly knee moments with the heights.
Only a few puffins around today.
It is a stunning and awe-inspiring place.

  • Bobby's Bus Shelter, Unst

    June 20, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

This is a bus shelter that is decorated by the locals. At the moment the theme is Bees, there is a carpet, small curtains, chairs and a book case with children's books all on the bee theme. It also has a box of dressing up clothes- so you can dress as a bee if you wish. Great fun. Apparently, Bobby used to leave his bike here when he went to school each day. When the island council said the shelter was to be removed he wrote to them about his bike and they left it there.Read more

  • Fish and chips and an otter

    June 20, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Our last full day on Shetland, we take the boat back to Aberdeen tomorrow evening. We left Unst on the ferry and while we were waiting to board an otter just trotted along next to us before disappearing over the rocks and away. Magical.
Then after exploring Yell we caught the ferry back to Mainland Shetland and our final night camping. We are at the marina in Brae. The main reason for coming here for me is having fish and chips at the most northerly fish and chip shop in Britain and they didn't disappoint! Yum.

  • Sailing home

    June 22, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Boarded the ferry and spent an hour on deck watching as sailed past the gannets and puffins. A great end to a fantastic holiday. We will be back, so much more to see.
