  • Antigua

    25 Agustus 2017, Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Antigua, Guatemala - the old capital, the city amongst 3 volcanoes (one very active!), the home of pimped up chicken buses. A beautiful old Spanish colonial city but also a weird Americanised tourist trap where you can find McDonald's, burger king, dunken Donuts etc etc - none of which I went to of course!

Spent days exploring the ruins of old building (it's also earthquake country) and learning about the culture of all the indigenous tribes, many still present and doning their traditional dress, each distinct for their region.

Spent nights playing pool and drinking craft beer with backpackers and locals alike (and discovering that apparently after a pint I'm a pool shark!); learning a little salsa (difficult in thongs/flip flops) and partying at an all night "pool party" 30 mins out of town and getting very excited when the DJ starts playing a song from Aussie band Rüfus. *The dancefloor was at the bottom of an empty pool.

It definitely wasn't 'real' Guatemala but it sure was fun!

Local animal market held every Friday in the Highlands... The market is held on the top of a very steep hill in the town, seemed like an inconvenient location!! People scoped out the animals, their health and bought what they needed. The animals were not very happy to be there - a bit sad. But at least they're probably not going to,,/coming from a factory farm?
I asked around out of interest - approx $20 for a puppy, $100 for a cow, $50 for a sheep or pig. I was tempted to buy all the puppies...

  • Trek Xela to Lago Atitlan

    2 September 2017, Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Trekked with a non-profit organisation called 'Quetzaltrekkers' from Xela to Lake Atitlán. A beautiful three days walking through mountains, cornfields and small villages. Experienced my first 'temezcal' the Guatemalan version of a sauna - a mudbrick room heated by a fire below. Most houses have one in their backyard. There must be something to saunas and thermal baths, so many cultures have them! Also made a friend and one place we stayed - Mushu the cat was very friendly and as soon as I picked her up she jumped onto my backpack and made herself and home. Probably walked about 10 metres before she realised trekking wasn't for her!

Arrived at Lake Atitlán for Sunrise - so fortunate to have a clear morning after raining all afternoon and evening the previous day. See the next post for more photos!

A limestone platform with 7 amazingly clear blue/green pools to swim in and a raging river/waterfall underneath. Only thought a little bit about what if the platform collapsed....
Beautiful place to visit, interesting geology (I'm such a nerd!) And a fun rope swing in the river below! Well worth the effort to get to and from this part of Guatemala!Baca selengkapnya
