  • Cookout

    5 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we headed up to The Tower-Roosevelt area to ride out on old-fashioned horse-drawn wagons for a Western style cookout. We rode out several miles into Pleasant Valley at an original wagon stop, where they had a fantastic dinner waiting for us. Our horse driver was Jerry, a local who has lived in the Yellowstone Gardiner area his whole life, who regaled is with tales of the old-timers, the wildlife, and local lore. We ate steak (grilled to your preference), beans, cornbread, and drank cowboy coffee brewed over an open campfire. One staff member brought a guitar and sang songs in old country-western Gene Autrey style while we watched the bison grazing on the other end of the meadow. Such a good relaxing time. Czytaj więcej

  • Mud Volcano

    5 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After our cookout we scooted back so we could see the Mud Volcano and Dragon's Mouth Spring on the way home. Mud Volcano used to spew from a cone and shower mud everywhere, but a couple decades ago it blew itself up and now is a boiling pool of mud. Dragon's Mouth is a deep dark cave that continuously spews a foul-smelling steam that perfectly resembles its name. What a bizarre collection! Czytaj więcej

  • On the road again

    6 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

And we are moving to the Tetons! We drove along the John Rockefeller Jr Memorial Highway (also a national park) that connects Yellowstone to Grand Teton National Park (GTNP). Rockefeller donated about 33 square miles to the park system to expand the parks and protect against development. I'm sure the animals appreciate it so they can move unhampered between the parks and south to the National Elk Refuge in the wonder. Czytaj więcej

  • Exploring the valley

    6 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We couldn't wait to take in the Teton Valley (also referred to as Jackson Hole, "hole" being the old trapper term for a valley between mountains), so we cruised down the highway and stopped to take some pictures. The haze is bad, caused mostly because of the fires in Montana (although Oregon and Washington are burning too). Eric and I can envision buying a bunch of land and retiring to manage a dude ranch out here. Evidently a lot of other people have the same idea because there are TONS of them out here. Finally we wandered around the streets of Jackson by car; we are going to have to come back tomorrow to get a closer look. Czytaj więcej

  • Mormon Row

    6 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Eric directed us to drive out a little dirt road (yay!) to Mormon Row, the location where the Mormons first settled a developed their town in the early 1900s. Recognize that barn? It's the most photographed barn in the world, and for some bizarre reason several other people had the idea to photograph it at sunset too! Czytaj więcej

  • Grand Tetons

    7 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today we tried to get out and see some beautiful views, but the haze is a million times worse than yesterday and the mountains aren't even visible until you are right up next to them. The first photo I took is the best I could get, believe it or not. The next photo shows the church of the Sacred Heart, built in the 1930s and recently restored to its original beauty. Gayle and I spent an inordinate time in this awesome gift shop (Eric actually mobilized a search party because he was in the car and wondering if a bear ate us), and then we went into Jackson and ate at Moe's BBQ (killer ribs!). We browsed the streets, Gayle ogled a $700 coat, and we bought some homemade fudge for later.

On our drive home we were scouting out real estate (another favorite hobby) and were appalled by the prices. A standard 1100 square foot house, 2 bedroom, 1 bath, runs about $950,000. Next we saw a couple cars pulled over and people out with their cameras, and knew there was something good to see-lo and behold there was a beautiful pronghorn antelope (misnomer, it's actually a deer) on the side of the road in the grasslands. Can't get over the wildlife!

  • Teton Haze

    8 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today we went to all the well known turnouts and viewpoints, but the weather was not cooperating. As we got closer to the mountains, the view was better, but the peaks are so tall that the clouds gravitate towards them obstructing the view. The overall fog/haze/smoke gave the scenery an ethereal quality. Czytaj więcej

  • Right place right time

    8 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After a brief rain shower and hearing thunder in the distance, we drove along to the next turnoff down a dirt road that brought us close to the water's edge. There was quite a crowd, and quickly we saw what had grabbed their interest--a bull moose feeding by the riverside, along with moose cow and calf. We all went crazy because we had been dying to see a moose and he was seriously up close and personal. As we watched him, he casually crossed the river towards the throng of people gawking at him, growled to indicate they were too close to his family for his liking, and wandered into the trees.

We feel so lucky to have gotten to see this spectacular sight on our last real day of vacation!!!

  • Jenny Lake

    8 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

The clouds broke open after brief rainstorm with big fat summer drops, and we walked out to a viewpoint over Jenny Lodge. The sun dropped behind the mountains and the rays of sun peeked out into the sky like a painting. We all went a little crazy snapping pictures! Czytaj więcej

  • I dont WANNA go home yet

    10 września 2017, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After spending the night in Battle Mountain (which holds the questionable title of "Armpit of America"), we awoke to discover Jack & Gayle's motorhome wouldn't start. After googling and hunting around, we determined it was not going to be anything a layman could fix. After a call to Good Sam for a mechanic, a few hours wait in a air-conditioned RV, and a couple of football games later the mechanic showed up. Turns out the starter went out and he was able to jerry-rig a fix on the spot. None of us minded too much given the amenities and given we got to extend our trip a bit! Czytaj więcej
