    January 14th 2020 was the day that Melbourne was officially ranked as having the worst air quality in the world. The smoke from the forest fires surrounding Melbourne and Sydney was so bad that it gave a record reading in Melbourne of 407 meaning the air quality was toxic.

    Outside Melbourne the small town of Wangaratta, Victoria recorded some of the worst pollution in the developed world, rating 568 on the world air pollution index, almost double the hazardous rating of 300.
