  • Cake for Breakfast at 11

    19 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

My stay at Hostel 11 was very good. Extremely friendly and helpful staff especially the hospederio for whom nothing was too much trouble For 16 € a night you got a bed in a 4 bunk room with massive under bed lockers key provided excellent showers and common areas all well maintained. Tea coffee and cake available for a donation honesty box .While beers wine soft drinks chocolate and souvenirs were on sale from reception from said young man Jochaim . But what will stand out for me was the included breakfast . Not only were you asked to select a time slot but when you arrived down in the morning you had your table allocated set with the finest crockery and cutlery and a section of breads with butter jams . Cereals along with various spreads milk and fruit juices and a flow of coffee made in small batches to keep fresh AND CAKE. It was very acceptable and not by any stretch of the imagination a typical free breakfast . Neither I could add was when the lady who I think was the owner possibly Jochaim mum took the effort to walk me to the door and see me on my way with a big hug. No hesitation to stay here againBaca selengkapnya

  • DAY 5 Walk

    19 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Slept well despite being in the largest most open dorm yet at least until 3 when I awoke and was conscious of the noise of bloke in the next beds what I can only assume was some sort of Sleep apnea machine in truth it wasn’t that loud but once I got it in my head that was that . I read then until I got up at 545 . Having a nice cup of tea and chatting to young ones who are also up and about to head off for a days walking . When a few more are up in my dorm I going and pack .

Headed off a 730 decided that I much prefer the coastal path as to the coastal route at least where they diverge so heading down the hill towards the sea as opposed to the Camino which seemed to be following the forest through the hill . Not simple to get to shore with many lanes running towards it but not all reaching it as I found out yesterday anyway after a coffee and donuts for breakfast and treat for later I spied a lane which was advertising a Surf Bar and sure enough it worked the Atlantic in all its glory . I followed the path alongside it and a brief period actually walked the sands ( too hard on the legs ) right into P

  • Day 5

    19 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I decided this morning to continue along the actual Coastal paths as far as I could on my way to Caminha to stay and from where to catch the short ferry sailing. Such a invigorating morning walk was even able to snatch a short walk on the sands before rejoining the formal.coastal.route in to town This looks like another stunning little town but to be honest I was much too tired for exploring so after finding out sailing times for the Ferry and eating I dozed around the hostel the rest of the day
However I went out tonight to take some photos of the place . With me deviating from the orthodox route My walk on shore turned today from 16 to a 26k day but it was truly worth every step

  • Right I've got it

    19 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

I've been struggling to get my head around the whole thing about people talking about their Camino Family in that I thought they meant folk they choose to walk with even though they choose to come alone but no it actually refers to the folk you engage with often briefly but quite often because you are on the same stages at the same time . So I reckon I have a Camino family with lots of people greeting one along the way and sharing stuff ... It's really nice when some one shouts your name as you pass them as they sit in a coffee shop or turn up at the same albergue . Random acts of Kindness seem to be the currency everyone sharing advice . Sweets wine and even hugs and kisses . People are very open too telling their stories many of which are fascinating funny and few even very sad . I sat with a Pastor from Church of Scotland last night who is convinced her partner is going to propose when he meets her in Santiago next weekend and she has her doubts . Another French lady had planned to do the Camino with her husband but he passed away in March and she's doing it for him ..Then you meet the guys who stop at every bar /cafe on the way and rock up at Alberques last thing usually full of life and laughs .. Life is all here yet it almost in a little cacoonBaca selengkapnya

  • Day Six Walking

    20 September 2019, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Up and ready to.go but have to wait patiently on the ferry across the river into Spain another new adventure. The whole place was rudely awaken last night by a very loud horn blowing which sounded very like a fog horn so let's hope the Ferry is able to leave on time at 9am oh yes just remember to put the clock forward one hour today !
My Swiss buddy turned up here last night didn't meet him until a toilet visit after the horn blew !

  • Never far away

    20 September 2019, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Had a beer with a bloke Peter who lives in Seattle and described himself as one of the last blue collar workers for Starbucks there . We got talking and it turns out he wasn't brought up in Seattle can't remember where he said but he remembers a lad Seamus from Belfast who was out on a Youth programme staying with Irish neighbours of his in the 70s and they kept in touch for years .... He said he is 50 this week so he must have been a young kid back then .Baca selengkapnya

Arrived before my backpack and couldn’t even have a shower or get out of my wet clothes until it arrived ... Thank god for Google translate the lady who has no English phoned them and I was able to go and get it. Had a shower just waited to jump in before these German monopolise the tumbler dryer all dayBaca selengkapnya

  • Day whatever it is

    22 September 2019, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Well that me up after quite a disturbed night I have to say the dorm was quite noisy despite or maybe because of it having the highest age profile of any the places I’ve stayed so far in fact the young Germans encountered on arrival were the only ones I seen one that could describe as young people .Highlights of the late night antics were someone using a hairdryer in a bunk at 1130 , someone turning on and off the dorm lights repeatedly for a good 5 minutes about an hour later but to take the biscuit at 230 yes 230 some guy was working noisily at his bedside locker .When I eventually decided to remonstrate and got up he was turning on the washing machine and was fully dressed now I don’t know if he was leaving early or if he’d just arrived but I just thought what’s the point the guys obviously got something going on so just smiled weakly and had a pee

Well it purports to be a22k day into Vigo the largest city in Galicia . The weather forecast is for showers and mild breezes to so let’s hope that’s as rough as it get this is not a particular scenic route I believe but if I am able to see anything without rain and mist it’ll look good to me . Just had breakfast with the last of my eggs and bread from last night need to back up find out where the Camino can be picked up again in this town and get on the road. Had to book a hotel in Vigo it’s not very pilgrim centred and I can’t check in to 4pm so no hurry today ... but on the positive side it has a indoor pool so I’m looking forward to that .
