    Busy days and only little time spending within WiFi reach... We left Cologne on Sunday travelling South to my old friend (flatmate from my time in Mainz) Annette and her partner Marcel in Muenchweiler close to the Pfälzer Forest for a night. A great day to catch up and walk around the countryside.Read more

    Rhineland romanticism....

We had a fabulous day in Rüdesheim, the epicentre of the Rhine tourism and walked, took the gondola the lift and the boat around the Germania monument on top of the vineyards on the hills...and learned a lesson on historic patriotism as well.     We started the Rhine tour at the Abbey of St. Hildegard of Bingen, beautifully placed on the hill in the vineyards. A great place to retreat and enjoy. 50 Benedictine sisters still live there and offer a diverse programme of retreats, hospitality, vines and the famous spelt products and of course her books. Never been there before, very special. We finished the day the the little pilgrim church Marienthal - valley of Mary. One of the oldest pilgrimage places in Germany, today still a small Franciscan community situated in the forest not far from the Rhine. I have spent some time there as a student.Read more

    Unexpected an as a great surprise...my mother revieved a special service award for her long service in the community council and history society from the federal state Hessen..so special to be present for this. She was mentioned as a great example for the community and democracy 😊Read more

    We travelled further South into the region where we last lived before coming to NZ, close to Heidelberg and Beate, a former colleague from the Freiburg Diocese and her family. They treated us to an open air show of 3 Musketeers. A fun evening with local colour.Read more

    Pilgrimage sound and people

    Attending church in the morning was a special moment, as it brought back many memories from our joint working and faith experiences in sound (the chosen music) and people, Fr. Bernhard a colleague from that time who even remembered Simon on his altar servers pilgrimage to Rome in 2010. We left after a fabulous coffee (and ice cream) made by Noah.Read more

    We travelled on to Heiligkreuzsteinach, the village we lived before coming to NZ. Petra, Arvid and Marc live now in the neighbour village. Petra took us around our old home space, the street, the shortcut for Josh, Jonathan and Simon to the bus (Sauhohl), the forest kindergarten, the church, the village centre...remembering the driveway that Jonathan cycled down into the creek or our winter bob sleigh track and more...Read more

    Heidelbergers...

    Elijah and Benjamin are born in Heidelberg. And interestingly Elijah reflected on his mihi this day seeing his mountain and river. Heidelberg is a must see for every tourist to Germany (as the Cologne Cathedral, Rüdesheim and the Rhine) and Petra showed us her city as she knew it from her time as a student. The Castle impresses every time! And so does the student prison 😊Read more
