    First day

    July 20, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

    Arrived in Amsterdam!
Things are a little fuzzy due to no sleep but our hostel is pretty stylish. Some friends and roommates went down to the red light district and to find some food and I fell down like a clod haha
The Generator-our hostel was previously a university building.

  • Day 2: classroom visit and bike tour

    July 21, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today we went to class and had a speaker give a talk about her work in the “ethical porn” industry as a director and producer. Very interesting.
Then we went to lunch on our own then met up for a bike tour. Bikes are a HUGE deal here. Amsterdams infrastructure is centered around bikes. They also have ridiculous public transportation. We rode a ferry for free with our bikes and then rode for an hour around the beautiful north end. We saw houses that were built by/for ship captains in the 1600’s. We saw a windmill that had been there since the 1700’s that has enormous granite wheels that pulverize chalk.
Then I went off on my own. I took the subway back into town. Stopped at the hostel real quick and realized I needed an Apple Store. So I hopped back on a tram and headed into town. So many canals!! Wandered around and saw streets upon streets of restaurants. I need my alone time so I had dinner at this lovely spot Kop van Jut. Nice Dutch comfort food. Then stumbled upon the Rijksmuseum and got myself a ticket for Friday

  • Day 3 in Amsterdam

    July 23, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Wheew! Big day… for school we had a visit to the Prostitution Info Center in the Red Light District. A trans man named Bear, who was from the United States (moved here in like 2000) gave us a talk. It actually got pretty heated when some students asked about trafficking—which is a legit huge problem in Portland. Bear didn’t seem to see things the same way. For example, “a girl might work and just give all of her money to her boyfriend to deal with” isn’t seen as trafficking. In fact, according to Bear, calling these girls victims infantilizes them because ultimately it’s their choice. So that gave a lot in the cohort some feelings and we had a debrief meeting about it. After that I really needed some alone time so I went to the Medieval Torture Museum which was kind of dumb and walked around a bit. Went back with friends to to Kop van Jut, and then got my lip pierced. THEN we went to a “goth night” that turned out to be really lame but I had the perfect dress for it!Read more

    July 25, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Thursday we went as a class to the Werldmuseum which is basically a museum of Dutch Colonialism. It was very fascinating and thought provoking.
Afterward I went off by myself and did a little shopping at the All Saints store which was dreamyRead more

  • Rijksmuseum and Walking tour

    July 26, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

First, in the morning, I went to the Rijksmuseum. I took so many pictures I can’t include them all. Then we went as a class on a walking tour where we learned about what it was like to be gay throughout history in Amsterdam. Some really cool stories! Then I went off with a friend who supported me while I got a tattoo.Read more

  • Monday

    July 29, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we had a field trip to CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality. We learned what their group does, and had a little workshop. We broke into groups, made a collage, and made a presentation. The idea was to present to a philanthropist to convince them to give us money for our cause. Our group chose first generation immigrant youth.

Then I went off and just wandered on my own.

  • Ghent with tourgeoup

    August 5, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today I’m traveling to Ghent and Bruges. I purchased a tour on Trip Advisor and I like it so much. I don’t have to worry about what train to take where. And the wealth of information the Tourguide has is fantastic. The whole hour ride here she was giving us a history of how the city came to be. The royal intrigue and drama made the ride pass quickly
Ghent is a true medieval city. The castle was built in 1180–well after the town was fully established.
