  • Sound of Music Trail - Werfen

    22. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

After leaving Slovenia behind, we started the long drive toward Salzburg.

Originally I had planned a short stop in Werfen simply because Hohenwerfen Castle looked incredibly picturesque in photos.

But during my research I discovered something even better: the iconic Do-Re-Mi scene from The Sound of Music was filmed right here.

Since Sanjay absolutely loves the movie, the planned photo stop quickly turned into a mini Sound of Music pilgrimage 😄

  • Salzburg Evening Walk

    22. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Eventually we arrived in Salzburg and checked into a hotel near the train station — not the prettiest area, but very central.

After dropping off our luggage, we immediately headed out for an evening walk through the city toward dinner. Salzburg really knows how to look beautiful in the evening light, especially along the Salzach River at sunset.Les mer

  • St. Peter Stiftskulinarium

    22. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Dinner tonight was at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium — which proudly claims to be the oldest restaurant in the world, operating since the year 802.

I expected dark medieval interiors and old-world atmosphere. Instead, the courtyard where we sat was this fascinating blend of:

    - historic abbey architecture
    - Mediterranean flair
    - modern art
    - and slightly funky pop-art touches

    Unexpected, but actually very cool.

    The food itself was fantastic:

    - wild garlic soup with asparagus
    - mixed salad
    - Tafelspitz with all the classic accompaniments
    - Wiener Schnitzel
    - and finally Salzburger Nockerln

And honestly? Those Salzburger Nockerln might have been one of the best desserts of the entire trip.

  • 220Grad

    23. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Back into the winding alleys of Salzburg for our first stop of the day: 220GRAD Rupertinum.

I had researched them beforehand and quickly realized they are considered one of the top specialty coffee roasters in town — so naturally we had to go.

The café itself is sleek, modern, and absolutely buzzing with people. I had no idea how popular their brunch service was. Every table packed, constant movement, great atmosphere.

I grabbed some beans for home and enjoyed a cappuccino while taking in the chaos. Friendly staff, excellent coffee, and a really cool space.

  • Morning Walk through Salzburg

    23. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After coffee, we wandered through Salzburg’s old town again — market squares, tiny alleys, baroque buildings… and suddenly:
oompa-oompa music, ceremonial gunshots, traditional outfits, beer, marching bands 😄

Turns out we had accidentally stumbled into celebrations connected to the opening of the Salzburger Dult.

We picked up Mozartkugeln for home, found a lovely café for breakfast, and eventually wandered through the Mirabell Gardens.

And of course… more Sound of Music filming locations 😄
At this point the movie was basically following us around Austria.

  • Hangar-7

    23. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After checking out of the hotel, we headed to Hangar-7 — the famous Red Bull aviation and motorsports museum.

The architecture alone is worth the stop. Sleek glass curves, planes suspended throughout the space, Formula 1 cars, helicopters… a very cool experience, especially for Sanjay.Les mer

  • Königssee & St. Bartholomä

    23. mai, Tyskland ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    Next stop: Königssee.

And wow… the amount of tourists 😄
The parking lot alone felt like a small city.

Eventually we made it onto one of the famous electric boats and glided across the lake surrounded by dramatic mountain walls, forests, and crystal-clear water.

    Then came the postcard moment:
St. Bartholomä sitting perfectly in front of the massive Watzmann mountain backdrop.

    Absolutely stunning.

The boat guide also demonstrated the famous echo wall — incredibly cool to hear bouncing through the valley. And I still can’t believe these boats have been electric since 1909. That feels wildly ahead of its time.

We explored around St. Bartholomä briefly before taking the boat back to shore.

Genuinely one of the most beautiful natural places of the trip.

  • Augustiner Bräustuben

    23. mai, Tyskland ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

The drive onward to Munich unfortunately turned into a traffic nightmare. What should have been a short transfer stretched into nearly half a day.

Fun side story though: once traffic finally started moving again, I desperately needed a bathroom stop and randomly exited the highway… only to realize we had accidentally ended up back at Dinzler Kaffeerösterei — the same roastery where we had stopped almost three weeks earlier on the way to Slovenia 😄

Eventually we reached Munich, checked into the hotel, and headed straight for one final Bavarian dinner at Augustiner Bräustuben:

    - Weißbier
    - Schweinekrustenbraten with potato dumplings
    - Würstlpfanderl with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes

A very proper Bavarian finale before heading home tomorrow.
