  • Fromista to Carrion de los Condes

    6. september 2023, Spania ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

Left for Carrion de los Condes at 7:30 AM. Approximately 21 km's. Beautiful morning, very cool, nice countryside to hike through. During the lunch stop in Villacarzar, de sirga ran into several of the corp pilgrims we began the journey with. Great seeing them and catching up. Great day fitness wise, never got tired feet, and ankles held up well. Trekking poles are amazing. After checking g into the municipal alberge, did some hand washing, walked to the supermercado for some Dove soap. Will grap dinner, to sleep early. Thought the nuns at the church were singing tonight , however, they are on a rest day. Buen Camino.Les mer

  • Carrion de los Condes to Terradillos

    7. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Left for Terradillos at 7:45 AM. Approximately 26 km's. Was fortunate enough to meet up with Paola from Italy via Peru. The unfortunate part in that is it was at the beginning of the stage. No sightseeing with her. Strictly business. We got to Terradillos in record time, but my dogs are barking. The local church gave Mass for the pilgrims, which was
very nice. The Sponsoring Alberque had a dinner for us afterward . Met a gentleman from the Czech Republic, Las. He gave me a pear. Yeah, thought it was weird as well. Thanks to Paola I going to bed early. Buen Camino.

  • Terradillos to Bercianos

    8. september 2023, Spania ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Left for Bercianos at approximately 8 AM. 25 km's. Passed through Sahagun

ceremoniously is said to be the halfway point. Thank goodness for real time. I am way past half. The albergue is run by the church. Very tight but very clean 4 bunk rooms. Visited the church. Walked past a car, the model name was Zoe... Will send the picture to my granddaughter. Met a young African living in Spain. Originally from Cameroon. He and I had made eye contact a few times in the past. He was so happy each time he saw me. He asked me my name and would clap, showing appreciation. What was so remarkable is that he slept on a sleeping mat next to the trails each night. At the stop, where we took the photos, he asked if I wanted a short video. He gave me a small stone. He was collecting rocks along the way. Very nice young man.Les mer

  • Leon to Villadangos

    9. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Left for Villadangos at 7:45 AM. Approximately 24 km's. Leon is a very modern city. I saw more identity and style here than any other city on the Camino so far. The tour of the cathedral was awesome. Had to say farewell to Poala. She has to get back to her job in Italy. At Valverde decided to go another 10 km's. Was feeling pretty good. So I and a couple others hiked into Villadangos, for a 33 km day. Most so far in one day. What was even more special as I was leaving Dora The Explorer and Gisella was arriving. I am so happy you didn't get to see three old people acting like children hugging and laughing. Since I was on my was out we said we would reconnect in Astorga.Les mer

  • Bercianos to Mansilla to Leon.

    9. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Left for Mansilla at 8 AM. Approximately 25 km's. From Mansilla, several of us caught the train to Leon with Paola for she was leaving the Camino here to get back to her home in Italy for her job. She comes back to Leon next year to finish her Camino. She was so helpful with the culture and language barriers. She was so determined on the trails, relentless at times. I knew her pushing hard and never quit attitude was going to help me and it really did.Les mer

  • Villadangos to Astorga

    12. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Left Villadagos for Astorga. 28 km's. Having hiked 33 km's the day before was very surprised that I was able to get 28 in today. After arriving we sat down for a quick lunch. After went straight to the Alberge and checked in. Washed some clothes and laid down. It was rained most of the evening, so there was no dinner. However a English chap, Jeffrey brought me back a cheeseburger. Gone in 30 seconds. Bedtime for me. Buen Camino. Haven't decided about tomorrow yet, but let me tell you I starting to think about Santiago for the first time. Beautiful countryside side today, nice place to lay my head tonight. Great day. Buen Camino.Les mer

  • Astorga to Rabanal de Camino

    13. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Left for Rabanal at 7: 30 AM, approximately 21 km's. Can't tell you much about Astorga. Never left the Albergue was very tired. Thought about bypassing Rabanal because it is only 21 km's from Astorga. Imagine when you would consider 12 miles a short day. Because it was a steady climb maybe it wasn't so short afterall. Passed through several small towns so had an opportunity to stop and relax a couple times. Talked with a wonderful young lady for about 5 km's, AJ from Melbourne Australia. Originally from Bombay India. Her family left India when she was 11, she has a graduate degree but says something is missing from her life so she hopes the Camino will help her find what that is, very nice, very enjoyable convo. The Albergue in Rabanal is small and rustic, I love it. A very nice couple runs it. I definitely enjoy the small Mom and Pop type Albergue's over the larger and more crowded ones.Les mer

  • Rabanal to Acebo de San Miquel

    14. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Left Rabanal for Acebo de San Miquel at 8 :15 AM. Approximately 21 km's. We are not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy. Back in the mountains again. In order to reach the Famous Iron Cross, had to climb into the thin air. Unlike the first mountain phase where your hip muscles was screaming for blood flow, your ligaments and tendons for flexibility, and your lungs for oxygen your body has adapted. Like Robyn Bess said earlier you just can't adjust for that straight downhill. Just brutal. On this very arduous downhill you realize that your trekking poles have added value. Not only do they assist your downhill, but they also serve like windshield washers with the back and forth keeping the swarm of flies out of your face. After a while you are satisfied just keeping the flies out of your mouth. The view from the albergue is awesome. There are no words that will accurately describe it. Back to the Iron Cross. I felt his spirit there today. It was so gratifying, made all the fatigue have value. Will machine wash clothes, then air dry. Very tired, but very fulfilled. Robyn, again I am in total agreement on trying to ascend a mountain on slate rock for a few km's. Very, very difficult. I am happy for today. Will bid you a fond adieu. Buen Camino.Les mer

  • Rabanal del Camino to Ponferrada

    15. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Left for Ponferrada at 9 AM. Had to wait for the rain to stop. Approximately 30 km's mostly downhill. Still a little tired from yesterday, but out the door when the rain ceased. Walked through a couple of little but nice towns on the way. Molinaseca had quite a few nice places to stop and shop or get a café. The little town of Campo was a sleep except for the guy gave out a few pears and the little old lady who just wanted to chat. Ponferrada seems pretty nice, already did my walk around while looking for a bank after getting into town. Albergue is very nice.Les mer
