    Pacific Inn

    August 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

Totally acceptable lodging, close to Waterfront Park and walking distance from a ton of restaurants and...I guess shopping, but like I care about that. Tremendous bonus: free parking, which is hard to come by in this area. Maybe not the greatest neighborhood, but if you can ignore the sketchy people lurking around...it's not like they bother you. Also the train is close-by and there's the airport...it actually sounds like this place is horrible, doesn't it? But it's not.Read more

  • Civico 1845

    August 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

I actually picked a different place to eat, based on Yelp recommendations, but we went walking around Little Italy and ended up here. Michele and Sandy were taken with the vegan menu posted in the window, which was funny because our waiter seemed, if not openly hostile, at least dismissive when they requested this menu at the table. He thought all my choices, in contrast, were "brava." I had a Coronado IPA which was decent, and a mushroom risotto which was outstanding. Way more food than I could eat. Would totally do this again.Read more

  • Waterfront Park

    August 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

We walked our dinner off down by the water. Since it was night, we couldn't see too much but we could see the giant City and County Admin building, which rises like a castle above Waterfront Park. Where do these people park when they come to work? Along the waterfront there were a couple of restaurants and one particularly bumping nightclub, packed with girls I never was, teetering around in those dumb cork wedge-heeled sandals. Sometimes I like being old. I added some pics I took during the daytime, when there was a giant group of people doing yoga in the park.Read more

  • Harbor Breakfast

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We found this place walking around after Yelp failed to give us a clear winner for breakfast. It was busy but we got a table outside after a few minutes. I don't know that I'd do this one over; although the food was good, it was almost too healthy. My omlette was awash in squash and red peppers, but the texture was mooshier than I prefer. Michele got a burrito that was kind of a potato-bomb. Sandy went for pumpkin pancakes which tasted good, but were kind of squishy inside. I don't know, it wasn't terrible but left me vaguely unsatisfied.Read more

  • Lofty Coffee

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Sandy and I went out for an early coffee run; she'd been here before but I hadn't. Great corner location right where they hold a farmers market on Saturdays so we watch them set up. I had a very good Americano, Sandy had an amazing "Aztec Mocha," which involved lots of chili powder. Staff was friendly, very cool place.Read more

  • Coronado Ferry

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We took the ferry to Coronado to get out on the water. $9.50 roundtrip, which I thought was well worth it. We had beer and appetizers while in that terrible seaport tourist trap on Coronado; it was kind of perfect. Gorgeous day!Read more

  • Village Pizzaria

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

I can't imagine what it's like to live on Coronado, and have to deal with the masses of tourists coming over on the ferry. Their answer is to trap them in a handful of boutiques and restaurants right next to the ferry landing--most people won't walk farther than that. We didn't either, today, since we've already walked at least 5 miles, so it was the Village Pizzaria for us, where we could get beers for me and Sandy, and iced tea for Michele. Surprisingly, this mediocre-seeming place had good craft beers at decent prices, and a Brussels sprout appetizer that was really delicious. We declared the excursion a complete success.Read more

  • Mimmo's

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Turns out Saturday night is busy in Little Italy. We picked this place mainly because they had space for us. The inside is decorated kind of like...isn't there an Italian-themed casino in Vegas? So like that, but smaller and cozier. Like a pretend Italy street scene. It was cute. The food was fine--not spectacular, but fine. Good for fueling up before a race. We have to get up at 4 a.m. tomorrow. Gross.Read more

  • AFC Half Marathon finish

    August 20, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

If you like huge crowds, running through un-scenic areas, and a 2-mile hill at the end of your half marathons, the AFC race is for you! Otherwise you might be better off doing...well, most other races. It's always fun to do an event, and we certainly earned the right to sit on a boat and eat a bunch of food for the rest of the day, but this particular race was not a do-over.Read more

  • Prepkitchen Little Italy

    August 20, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Holy cow. This was the best place we've been yet. It's on the second floor and looks very cool from the street, so once we determined we could indeed get breakfast food we were sold. They were crowded in the dining room, but had plenty of space at the tables in the bar, so we sat there. I had an egg sandwich with pork belly and kimchi, which is NOT something I would have predicted wanting, but at the crucial moment I did, and it was delicious. The decor is a mix of rustic old and trendy new, and they totally pull it off. Visiting the restrooms is essential; the thought put into the decor really shows. LOVED this place.Read more

  • Flagship cruise

    August 20, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

After running a half marathon, we decided the best afternoon activity would be to float around the bay on a boat. We chose the 2-hour option which meant we got to cruise the north AND the south end of the bay. The boat is kind of a big yacht thing with indoor seating below, and outdoor seating on the top deck. We got beers and snacks and sat outside. The tour narration was a little tedious, and very military/retail opportunity focused, but the weather was perfect and it was so nice to be on the water.Read more

  • Ballast Point

    August 20, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Their beers are always strong, and the food here was also good. But I definitely liked their Miramar location better. More experimental beers, and most importantly, not directly under the landing path of the airport. Seriously, every few minutes a plane thundered overhead--it was really unsettling. Nice outdoor seating though, if you aren't terrified of planes.Read more
