    Lions, Lions, Lions...

    26 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Okay, I am not a fan of early mornings, and again we had to get up at 5:15. But it was really worth it. We had the most wonderful start of the day, first we saw a pride of lionesses. 11 of them. Then we saw 2 big males and then a female walking next to our truck, she had blood on her feet and her face. We also had a close encounter with a rhino. She was walking and then we were on her path. So she charged us. My adrinaline went sky-high.

I have to upload my pictures when I am home, as they are all on my camera.

    Cheetah sanctuary

    26 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

We are at the campsite of a cheetah sanctuary. We were welcomed by the owners. They get cheetahs that they try to replace in the wild. They also have 3 cheetahs, that they got as cubs, and they needed to bottle feed them. Because of that they are very tame.

We got time to be in their garden and spent time with those 3 cheetahs. If they came to us, we were allowed to touch them. They would start licking you.

After that we went to the area where the cheetahs stay that will be placed back in nature reserves. They were given food (big chunks of Zebra)

After that we came to our campsite. Set up our tents, ate fried rice, and enjoyed the quiet evening under the stars...

    What a special day!

    A night under the stars

    28 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We are on our way to Cape Cross, where we have a stop over to see a seal colony. Last night we stayed in the middle of a group of huge rocks, in a dessert area, called Spitzkoppe.

I slept outside and had a very good rest. We woke up at 6:30 and after breakfast left.

Yesterday Often made us a royal dinner, roasted butternut, garlic bread, roasted potatoes, salad and as a speciality Kudu and Oryx (gemsbok). It was yummy!

The closer we get to the ocean, the colder it gets, everyone is putting on warmer clothes, as the difference between 38 and 18 is quite big.

    Cape Cross Seal Colony

    28 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We are having a stop to see the seals. The most overwhelming was the stench, it STANK! There were hundreds, maybe even a couple of thousands of seals.

It also was the place where in 1485 Diego Laõ landed. A Portuguese explorer, discoverer.Читать далее

Dessert trip dead horses and snakes

    29 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The first things we saw on the living dessert tour was the bones of many horses. Horse graves of the WOI , 13.000 troups from South Africa, with Jan Smuts, came to fight against the Germans in Namibia. The horses got horse flue, and there was no cure. It turned out to be transferable to people. Because of that huge trenches were dug. The horse were led into the trenches and the were shot dead. 2500 horses were shot and buried with all the gear. Dead dessert.

Now to the living dessert. Gekko's, Scorpions, all endemic.

The lichens fields are very easily damaged. Tracks from hundreds of years ago are still visible. Nowadays it is protected area, one of the many nature reserves in Namibia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichens_in_Namibia

The first living creature that we came across was a Peringuey adder.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitis_peringueyi

This small creature is very toxic. The toxin is both cell destroying and it is neurotoxic that specifically effects the eyesight. It has a 315 km an hour strike speed. And its eyes are on top of its head. It can get 3 or 4 years old. And less than 30cm long.

    Desert trip Tok tok beetle

    29 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The Tok Tok Beetle exist for 60% of water. If you want to survive in the dessert they are good food, high in protein and water. Amazingly it drinks the water that it gets from the fog. The small water drops of the fog, stream over the grooves that are on his shield to its head, where he can drink it!

    Dessert trip chameleon and Lizards

    29 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The Namaqua chameleon turns black when it is agitated, and when it is wat and happy it can turn almost white. It is a wanted pet, and therefore it becomes more difficult to find them.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namaqua_chameleon

The Shovel snauted Lizard has a double double blather, 20% body weight is water storage. They regrow their tails, if they loose them in a battle. The toes however don't grow back. If a lizard still has all of his toes, he is dominant. That male will have several woman. The more toes you have left, the faster you can run. They are day active, you can see that because it has small eyes. It stays on the same dune. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shovel-snouted_li…

    Living desserts Snake Park

    29 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

With Simon and Oscar I went to the snake park. It was nice but not really spectacular. Maybe we have been spoilt to much, with all the animals we saw in the wild.

There were however 2 tortoises, who were in "full action" or better he was, she just let it happen. And when their food arrived, she went eating cabbage and carrots, while he frantically went on with his business.Читать далее

    Seal, oyster and dolphin tour

    30 января 2020 г., Намибия ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

A boat trip on the Atlantic ocean. The first seal jumped on board while we were still at the harbour. Also a group of pelicans is traveling with us. They have been hand fed, after they were brought in to the animal rescue service.

They have returned 9 pelicans successfully in the last year. But the birds have become very used to people.

We first went to Cape seal colony. 1 male can have up to 50 females.
