Day 2 - Indiana - Illinois

Our goal is to get up into the northern parts of Canada as quickly as possible and then begin working our way south.

Last night, Wally was a little cold in his folding bed in the pop-up section, even though he used a layer of sheepskin as a mattress. We will have to think of something warmer for him. Sleeping arrangements are going to be important on a trip like this.

We have to get used to living in such a small space. Now and then, we have a good laugh trying to get from the front seats to the back without getting in each other’s way. There is not much room, but somehow we manage.

Wally has taken over the dishwashing. Last night, while he was on duty, two raccoons came right up to him. They were not at all shy and happily took pieces of bread and fig biscuits right out of his hand. That was quite an encounter.

We have decided to allow about an hour every morning to get the car ready and take care of everything before we leave. Wally and I have also decided not to shave anymore. We are letting our beards grow, which saves a little time every morning. On a trip like this, every free minute converts to discovering and exploring.

Unfortunately, somewhere along yesterday's travel, my Bulova watch disappeared. We think I may have left it in a restroom at one of our stops. I hope that is not the case, and it will turn up somewhere in the camper.

Today, we also turned the clock back one hour for the first time as we crossed into Indiana. It feels funny already to be changing time as we move farther west.Read more
