• Day 103 - Costa Rica

August 12, 1974 in Costa Rica

(Ursula) We slept relatively late and woke up to rain instead of the sun. Then we continued driving toward Costa Rica.

The terrain was less hilly, and we made good progress. The border officials were very polite but had a few strict requirements.

We had to purchase mandatory car insurance. Then we needed to have the wheels sprayed with disinfectant. But the worst was the Agricultural Police, who confiscated our two spare tires because they were not mounted on rims. Apparently, they could have contained harmful insect larvae. Heinz pleaded with the officials, but they reacted tensely, and we didn't want to escalate the issue.

Every country seems to have its border harassment. However, this one was costly!

Later, we found a beautiful trailer park in Liberia. The owner had designed it himself. It had generous spaces laid out beautifully between tropical plants and trees. There was a mini zoo with monkeys, colorful parrots, and other tropical birds.

A young puppy was trying to bite my leg while I was cooking.
