• Day 355 - Zipaquirá

    April 20, 1975 in Colombia

(Ursula) One day, we set out to visit the town of Zipaquirá, known for a cathedral said to be truly worth seeing.

What made it remarkable was that it was not a traditional cathedral at all, but a former underground salt mine carved into a vast chamber. The space was so immense it felt like a cathedral, and its quiet simplicity made it especially moving. At the front stood a massive stone altar adorned with flowers, and behind it, set into the salt rock, a large wooden cross softly illuminated in its niche.

Zipaquirá itself charmed us with its beautiful colonial-style buildings and, naturally, an abundance of artisanal shops. On the way back, we stopped in the town of Sopó and indulged in a strawberry cake with whipped cream at the Alpina bakery. Absolutely delicious. We also picked up a few jars of honey and some Swiss cheese to take along.
