  • Broome

    30. august 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Loving Broome even though it is a bit of a funny layout.... Town Beach and the main Jetty are surrounded by mangroves, and then Cable Beach is on the other side with incredible sandy beaches!

So much interesting information about the pearl farmers and the whole industry that originated here back in the day and the colonising of the Chinese, Japanese and Malaysians, up until the war.

We happen to be here during the Shinju Matsuri festival to celebrate all 3 cultures every year (this is the 53rd annual festival) so enjoyed the free activities and Tom started to learn Mahjong with the oldies!

The town Museum was a hit with a kids quiz at different age levels, and then dinner on the beach with Jilly, Mic and the kids to watch the sunset.

We've also enjoyed a few days camping at Broome Gateway bumping into Jilly and the family again so the kids loved it! 💗💗💗

The absolute best afternoon!!! We loved the camels and the girls looking after them were so knowledgeable and fun to be around 🐫

It was such a memorable experience which we all loved despite sweltering in the 38 degree heat!!!

Cable Beach is so picturesque and the perfect spot with a sea breeze 💖

  • Staircase to the Moon - Mangrove Hotel

    31. august 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

The 'Staircase to the Moon' is a phenomenon that only happens 2-3 days per month between March and October as the moon rises over the exposed tidal flats.

We had a great vantage point from the Mangrove Hotel, and not only that, but it had all the vibes with live music and didgeridoo playing whilst we watched the moon rise!

We got to meet up with Jilly, Mic, Zac, Toby and Milly too which was great fun for the kids!!

  • Broome Speedway

    2. september 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

With the Speedway right next to the caravan park we're staying at and listening to the cars whizzing round the track we decided.... 'if you can't beat them, join them!'

The kids absolutely loved it despite getting sprayed with mud and having a hot chip dinner!!! 😍Læs mere

  • Broome Caravan Park

    7. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Loved Broome Caravan park, the giant pool and morning yoga! It was just incredible that all our friends we've met on the road just appearing out of no where!!!

First Ricki turned up with Maxee and Tahlee so we got to spend a few days with them sharing kids and having a nice dinner altogether.

Then Jilly, Mick and the kids turned up for another few days which turned into a big drama whenTony decided to dump Lottie and much preferred Bella instead 🤪

Then Sally and Bill turned up with Toby the dog that we met at Kakadu and we had yet more on hand grandparents to help out! They took Tom out fishing and looked after the girls one night so Chris, Tom and I could go to the movies!

We were in Broome for the 53rd Annual Shinju Matsuri Festival to celebrate the Japenese, Chinese and Malaysian heritage of the city and the pearl farming industry.

We went to the closing ceremony which was great fun with live music, food vans and even a visit from Sammy the 16m Chinese dragon along with his 25 handlers! 🐉 🐲 🀄

    What a great evening 🥰

  • Willie Creek Pearl Farm

    12. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

What an adventure out on the Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tour! We loved it 💖

Our bus driver was really knowledgeable and from the moment we were picked up at the campsite we learnt a lot about Broome and all the things on offer up the Dampier Peninsula.

We arrived and had a tour of the harvesting room where we got the basics which were fascinating, before heading out on the boat to actually see the nets and get out an Oyster.

It was amazing that the Nacre from the pearl shell is now being used in bone grafts down at the Uni of WA in Perth for biomedical research.

Also really interesting to know that inside the pearl is actually a piece of muscle shell which is how they get a more perfect rounded shape to the pearls!

Lottie and Bella took turns carrying the Oyster around in a little net bag, and after a beautiful morning tea on the deck with cheese and herb damper, fruit and chocolate cake... we went to actually harvest the pearl inside!

Lottie did the honours and Bella got to take the pearl to the show room to get it sized and valued at $500 🤩

  • Chahoya Spa

    15. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Our final day in Broome and after squeezing in a last minute Podcast interview with Anna Hastie (a Broome local), I enjoyed an afternoon at the spa by myself!

I finished off the day watching the sunset at Cable Beach and then picked up Thai takeaway for dinner which was yummy!

Our final night was spent with Bill and Sally (and Toby 🐶) who have been so much fun to hang out with and helped look after the kids taking Tom fishing one morning and babysitting the girls so we could go to the Movies with Tom one night!

It was actually Bill's 71st birthday so Lottie made him a pancake for breakfast and a card, and he made us authentic American Smores for dessert (courtesy of the US shop in Melbourne)!!!!!

  • Barn Hill Station

    18. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

4 nights at Barn Hill Station was an interesting stop!

First we had to tackle 9kms of dirt road and corrugations, which we were pleasantly surprised weren't too uncomfortable.

Then we got moved to 3 different sites due to the poor organisation which proved a bit much in the end after having to pack and unpack in the heat and not enough power to have the air con running without tripping out....

But we still enjoyed the stay and the walks to the beach. The kids loved the big play area with the Guinea pigs and goats, the rock pools collecting shells and lovely dog walks with Sasha!

High tide was fun getting dumped for hours, and we even had a whole craft day at the van drawing and painting together ❤️

It was a nice chilled out few days and I even got to do an hour's Qi Gong class on Monday morning 💗

  • Port Hedland

    21. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Short stay in Port Hedland so we did a trip to the local Museum and were met by a couple of enthusiastic locals (one of which was 97yr of Arnold, still president of the museum committee and several other volunteer roles in the community!).

We learnt about the major exports of wool, salt, iron ore, gold and manganese over the years, and the sinking of the Katoomba in 1912 that has never been found....

We stopped off to see the ships in Port loading up, and then lunch at the Silver Star Cafe which the kids thought was pretty novel being on a train!

  • Albert Tognolini Lookout Free Camp

    22. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Our plan was to head south inland towards Tom Price to do a mine tour but unfortunately I didn't get booked in time 🤦‍♀️

We still contended with large mining machinery and police escorts, not to mention the Quads (4 trailer road trains 60m long) or 'centipedes' as Tom decided to call them due to having over 100 tyres on the road!!!

Our idea was to stay at this free camp for a few days so we could visit Karijini National Park but when we turned up it was nearly 40 degrees and there really wasn't anything for the kids to do...

Lots of red rocks and spinifex grass!

I enjoyed being back in the outback and with the mountains and the land. Incredible sunset, and having time for a Cacao with the sunrise in the morning was well needed and a beautiful way to start the day 🌞

Grateful to the family for a night of sweating to be able to wind down enough to have this time with the land!

Next day we drove 10km up the road to the Auski Roadhouse to have the Air-conditioning!!!

  • Karijini - Dales Gorge

    23. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

After moving to Auski Roadhouse for a few days we bumped into Bill & Sally again (and Toby 🐕)!!

We all ventured out to Karijini for the afternoon to Dales Gorge where we did the walk down all the steps to Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool for a well earned dip.

Home via the Visitor Centre for an ice cream and then we had dinner together back at the camp followed by more of the famous SMORES!!!! Yum yum!

Of course all the kids have made themselves at home in Bill and Sally's camp!

  • Karijini - Joffre Gorge

    24. september 2023, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Started the morning with the most amazing breakfast... Bill made his special pancakes (definitely close to Aunt Jemima's!) and Tom cooked up a storm with his homemade hash browns, scrambled eggs, maple bacon and baked beans (This kid can cook!!!!!).

We all headed out to Joffre Falls (Bella and Lottie with Bill and Sally!) and whilst we took the walk down to the bottom, Bill and Sally waved to us from the lookout.... it was a bit of a precarious walk with some very steep ladders to make it to the bottom, but it was well worth it!

  • Point Samson

    25. september 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 33 °C

4 days in the sleepy town of Point Samson... a tiny little place with a quaint little foreshore and Jetty!

  • Dampier

    2. oktober 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 32 °C

An afternoon drive out to Dampier for early referendum voting and a trip to the library to print the paperwork to renew my QLD driving licence application...

Then we headed down to the beach to have a play and walk the dogs, followed by visiting the famous 'Red Dog' statue (from the films!) on the way home. I thought the dogs (and the children) posed very well!!!

Another beach with another enormous jetty for iron ore exports.

A beautiful afternoon out at the river with Bill and Sally 🌞

The water was a great temperature and the kids found a rope swing to play on which was a hit, so we ended up staying till nearly dark!!!

Obviously a favourite free camping spot for many, so I ended up speaking to some interesting people!

Big happy 13th birthday to Tom!!! Can't believe we've got a teenager now 🤯🤩🥰

He had a great day building his new HUGE lego sets (nearly 5000 pieces worth) and watching movies till 1.30am with his mumma!!

We enjoyed a video call with Harry and the Best crew, complete with birthday cake and singing happy birthday, and then a Skype with the UK contingent!
