• Day 130. Kirkwall,Orkney Is. of Scotland

    May 15, 2025 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

We're in the Orkney islands of Scotland.
Sheep and beef cattle (black Aberdeen angus) are their primary economy. Only 4 dairy farms here because they don't make as much money for their dairy products as beef.
Originally, Orkney was ruled by Norway, then  Scotland took over approx 500 yrs ago.
Neolithic Orkney is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We visited the Ring of Brodgar (similar to Stonehenge in England). This dates back to the early Bronze Age. The stones come from at least 7 different locations here in Orkney. They think there were 60 stones originally, but there are only 36 remaining. 21 are still standing. Some people say the stones were moved by placing them on seaweed or rolling them on smaller rocks, but nobody really knows.
