A lovely farewell to South Island

    1 февраля 2025 г., Tasman Sea ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

We really loved our time in the north part of the South Island. It was a special highlight to spend time in the Nelson area and the Abel Tasman.... and such a treat to see Janie and Emma, Zac, Arlo and baba. We were farewelled with a gorgeous sunny morning, fair breezes and as we came around Farewell Spit we were joined by dolphins and Simon catching two fish at the same time!Читать далее

    Land Ahoy!!!

    4 февраля 2025 г., Tasman Sea ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Yay... we see land again!! After leaving farewell Spit we haven't seen land for three days! It's beautiful AND we were escorted by dolphins again! it's been an amazing trip north... we've been truly spoilt. The winds have been behind us and even the large rolling swell of up to 2 metre rolled behind and pushed us along.Читать далее

We made it! Resting in Whangaroa

    6 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We've arrived! So happy to be in this wonderful Harbour... so peaceful and still, especially after the rocking and rolling of the swell during our sail north. We had a lovely welcome by John and Cashmere as we rounded the head of Whangaroa Harbour. John joined us in celebrating our journey...very patiently listening to all the gorey details of our trip.. sharing fish n chips with the fish that John caught for us..and a few beers! And what a sleep we had!!! Today we have been lazying around... doing some much needed washing in wonderful fresh water provided on a floating bouy, having a great shower for Klepper and ourselves!Читать далее

    Livin' the life!!

    12 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Feeling very blessed to be pottering around on Klepper in Whangaroa Harbour. We have nothing exciting to report!! 😀

Life on board our floating home has settled into a lovely easy routine... each day bringing small work projects like cleaning the hull, topping up our batteries, washing... and lots of cooling off swims in between... eating, sleeping and reading.

Feeling rather lazy we have ventured ashore for a few land adventures... walking up a nearby waterfall (not really flowing as its so dry up here) and John taking us for a tiki tour in his car to 90 mile Beach (neat to see it from land!) and also taking us to for a food restock to Pak n Save!

    World famous !!!

    21 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We've been dreaming of making a trip to Manganui to be able to experience Manganui's World Famous Fish n Chips! The last two days were glorious warm breezes and very calm seas, so we spoilt ourselves with a trip out and had a chance to spread Kleppers Sails. It's only 23 Nautical Miles from Whangaroa so a short little trip... and so very much exceeded our dreams! Deeeelicious!Читать далее

2SUNSET OVER poor Knights Islands and marine reserveSunset over the Mokohinau Islands2Our Spinnaker2YAY....our Spinnaker2Wow... can this day get any better?!

    Our biggest challenge yet!

    23 февраля 2025 г., Новая Зеландия ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Sailing all the way to Coromandel without using our engine!!

Our plan was to leave Whangaroa and sail slowly down the coast, discovering new bays, islands, and places that we had missed on previous trips. Previous to completing our checks whilst preparing Klepper for our trip, we noticed a small drop in oil pressure, which has been of concern. On completing our engine checks and specifically the oil levels, we discovered the oil was a thick white sludge, obviously a serious amount of salt water had got into the engine, This is a pretty serious situation whilst being so far from home. We had an over riding sense that we needed to be back in Coro so that we can haul out on to the hard in Thames. Not wanting to risk breaking down on our home, we decided to embark on a different adventure, sailing all the way to Coromandel without using the engine. Klepper weighs eleven tons and is hard to maneuver in light or no wind without her engine. We decided to sail nonstop away from land to avoid drifting onto rocks.

So we sailed from Whangaroa Harbour to Coromandel, 160 nautical miles and three and a half days, with no engine and managed to make it all the way into Coromandel Harbour to anchor where we are tucked in from all the weather.

What an adventure! We had perfect hot sunny days, clear starry evenings, and everything from no wind to lots of wind! Every sail got a chance to be used even our favourite and most scary sail the Spinnaker got to fly! Our spinnaker is like a giant kite, and because it's so big, it has often felt too overwhelming to fly ... but this sail really was the star of the journey as we had only 2-3 knots of wind which would normally bring us to a complete standstill.. but we managed to move along up to 5 knots at times.

We'll now rest up and recover from all the excitement for a few days and then figure out what we will need to do with our engine! But right now we are relieved, exhausted, and very happy.
