  • Authentic Dominican experience

    8 febbraio 2024, Repubblica Dominicana ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today, we delved into the true Dominican Republic experience, far from the all-inclusive resort scene. Many locals here face economic challenges and are hustling to make a living. We had a laundry list of tasks before heading to Turks and Caicos: washing clothes, getting diesel, fixing the foresail, refilling gas, grocery shopping, and clearing out... The locals pitched in to help, making it quite an expensive but memorable experience!Leggi altro

  • Turks & Caicos

    11 febbraio 2024, Isole Turks e Caicos ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Our sailing trip to Turks and Caicos lasted approximately 38 hours. The first surprise awaited us shortly after setting sail. In the bay of Samana, we were surrounded by humpback whales! Water spouts and tail fins everywhere. With binoculars in hand, we observed these fascinating giants until they disappeared from view.

The wind was favorable, consistently blowing between 10 and 23 knots. However, the waves were a bit uncomfortable.
While reefing, the mainsail tore... Tomas attempted a makeshift repair... luckily, it held, and the damage didn't worsen. Who knew duct tape could work wonders! 😎
We arrived at night and dropped anchor in sandy ground. The next morning's surprise: picturesque turquoise waters and white sandy beaches as far as the eye could see.

On the same day, we sailed over to Cockburn Harbor. Along the way, we caught a barracuda. We grilled it for dinner, adding a taste of adventure to our culinary experience at sea!

  • In to the Blue

    13 febbraio 2024, Isole Turks e Caicos ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Ahoy there, fellow adventurers! Today's tale takes us from the mesmerizing blues and crystal-clear waters of Turks and Caicos to the quaint harbor of Cockburn in South Caicos. Picture this: we approached Cockburn Harbor, nestled among the islands, with its vast plateau where the water depth ranges from a mere 0 to 2 meters. It's like cruising on a giant lake smack dab in the middle of the North Atlantic!

Now, here's where the fun begins. Our trusty sailboat, bless its heart, had a tad too much draft for these shallow waters. So, faced with the prospect of a 17-hour detour to Provo, the largest island in the chain, we opted for the ferry ride instead. And let me tell you, folks, that ferry was no leisurely cruise—it was a thrill ride at 30 knots through a sea of unreal turquoise hues.

As we zipped along, we couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of locals loading up the ferry with everything from paint buckets to boxes of toast bread and children's toys. Ah, the everyday hustle and bustle of island life!

Now, Provo might've been a bit too 'Americanized' for our taste, but Cockburn Harbor? That's where the real charm lies. I could've happily lingered there a while longer, soaking in the laid-back vibe and friendly faces. Alas, the winds of adventure beckon, and tomorrow promises a sweet window for sailing.

So, onwards we go, with Jamaica as our next port of call! Stay tuned for more tales from the high seas as we chase the horizon and embrace the unknown. Until next time, fair winds and following seas, my friends! 🌊⛵️

  • Update😁

    21 febbraio 2024, Panama ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Ahoy, shipmates! Get ready to chuckle as I spin a yarn about our wild ride from the Turks and Caicos Islands to the land of reggae and rum, Jamaica!

Picture this: four days at sea, battling waves big enough to make Poseidon blush and winds so shy they barely whispered hello. Our trusty sail? Well, it still has a tear, so we had to use our trustfully motor sometimes…

I felt like a Pokémon in a spin cycle, dizzy and wobbly. But hey, at least I kept my lunch where it belonged.

Docking in Kingston was a comedy of errors. We ended up in the wrong harbor, but the harbor heroes sorted us out faster than you can say "pirate's booty." And oh boy, the paperwork parade! Customs, Immigration, Health...they all wanted a piece of us. I felt like I was signing my life away on more forms than a kid's permission slip for a field trip.

But wait, there's more! Sarah swooped in from Switzerland to join our merry crew, making us a fearsome foursome. As for me, I waved goodbye to the high seas and booked a flight to Panama. Easy peasy, right? Wrong! The airline played hardball, demanding a return ticket. Cue the frantic last-minute ticket scramble!

And that, folks, is how I found myself in Panama waiting for them to pick me up and ready for the next chapter of our madcap adventure. Stay tuned for more laughs, thrills, and maybe even a few spills!

  • Me, Myself and Panama🇵🇦

    22 febbraio 2024, Panama ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I snagged a cozy Airbnb near the airport. Let me tell you, folks, this place was cleaner than a whistle and perfectly situated. My host, a kind, helpful soul, made sure I felt right at home. Armed with his guidance, I set out to plan my journey to the other side of Panama – the Atlantic coast, specifically the San Blas Islands, where I hoped to meet Zenia again.

Now, let me tell you, arranging transportation in Panama proved to be a wild ride. Apparently, flights to San Blas are as rare as a mermaid sighting since they built that fancy new road. Luckily, my host hooked me up with a driver who whisked me away to San Blas Pty. From there, another arrangement awaited – a boat ride to El Porvenir, where my crew would be waiting to pick me up.

But hey, nothing worth doing is ever easy, right? Despite the logistical hurdles, I managed to spend a delightful day exploring Panama City. From the historic ruins to the bustling streets and, of course, the iconic Panama Canal, this city stole my heart with its charm and vibrancy.

The next day, my chauffeur drove me deep into the jungle to Guna Yala, where I now find myself surrounded by lush greenery. My hosts, descendants of the indigenous people who once inhabited this island, have welcomed me with open arms. Through broken English and spirited gestures, I've learned about their history and even embarked on a mini-hike with their grandfather, a font of knowledge about the Guna Yala Revolution.

Sunday, I'll journey onwards to the coast, hoping my boat transfer and rented bungalow plans fall into place. Finding accommodation on the islands proved to be a bit of a challenge, as most operators prefer to sell package tours rather than single-night stays. But hey, worst-case scenario, I'll be camping under the stars – not the end of the world, right?

Stay tuned for more adventures from the wilds of Panama! Smooth sailing (or jungle trekking), my friends!

Spanning 528 miles across the open sea, our journey from Jamaica to Panama unfolded over five days and five nights. • Back in Time

    11 marzo 2024, Panama ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Ahoy from the San Blas Islands, where time seems to be on island time – slow and steady wins the race! With short, breezy sails and barely a ripple in the waves, we're living the dream among 48 tiny islands that feel like they're straight out of a postcard.

But beware, fellow travelers: forget about ATMs and supermarkets here! It's all about embracing the local vibe, from buying odds and ends from the islanders to chilling in rustic palm hut bars and eateries.

Oh, and did I mention our little mishaps? We hit a rough patch running out of both cash and drinking water. But fear not, intrepid adventurers, for where there's a will, there's always a way – even if it involves a bit of MacGyver-ing and some creative problem-solving (thanks, Tomas!).

As we gear up to set sail for Colon on March 21st, Zenia's already mentally plotting her next escapade while we're here wrestling with a stubborn freshwater pump. Ah, the joys of sailing – never a dull moment! ⛵️😄

    21 marzo 2024, Panama ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Ahoy! Today's the grand finale with Zenia. We're embarking on a 12-hour odyssey from the San Blas Islands to Portobello, where Zenia will be grounded for two months, eagerly awaiting her next escapade.

But fear not, landlubbers! We're on a quest for a hotel that's not just a bed, but a cloud; a shower that sings opera; and a loo with a flush so fancy, it'll make you feel like royalty! 😁 Let's set sail and find this treasure trove of comfort and convenience!"
