    Its arrival in Toledo was innovative for the time, as it introduced a new level of naturalism and intimacy in religious sculpture—particularly the tender interaction between Mary and Jesus, with the Child’s hand caressing His Mother’s face, earning it the nickname the "Smiling Virgin of Toledo".

    The French Gothic influence—with its emphasis on human emotion and refined detail—was groundbreaking in Castile, where such naturalism was still rare.
