    Home Tours

    March 9 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We were stuck inside yesterday while it rained all day. Today we drove into Natchez to look at the neighborhood. The homes were not Plantation Homes, they were built to showcase the owners wealth and to entertain. We toured 2 very different homes today. Melrose, a 15,000 sq ft Greek Revival built in 1845 on 80 acres by Pennsylvania Lawyer John McMurran, it was beautiful. The home is now owned by the National park service, our tour was done by a ranger who was funny and informative . McMurran became very wealthy, owning several cotton plantations. He lost almost everything he owned during the civil war. Stanton Hall is a 1857 Greek Revival built by Dr Stanton who was also a cotton planter/merchant. The home was built on an entire city block. Nearby property included stables and slave quarters.Read more
