Krakau -> Auschwitz -> Bytom

Am späten Nachmittag kamen wir in Krakau an, die Parkplatzsuche erwies sich jedoch als schwierig. Aber auch das klappte nach ein paar Runden durch die Stadt 😁.
Wir liefen durch die Altstadt und kamen an der Burg, manchen Universitätsgebäuden und an Marktständen vorbei. Den Tag ließen wir mit einem ungeplanten Festmahl ausklingen. Michi wollte mehrere Vorspeisen, da er dachte, die seien eher klein... Das dachte er! Also gab es ungeplant Mengen an Pierogi plus unsere Hauptspeisen. Unsere Tischnachbarn beobachteten akribisch, ob wir wohl alles aufessen 😅.
Da wir schon mal hier waren, entschieden wir uns spontan, das KZ Auschwitz anzuschauen. Wir dachten nicht, dass es dort soooo viele Besucher geben würde. Da wir keine Tickets im Voraus hatten, sind wir zur Öffnungszeit 7:30 Uhr dort gewesen, und bereits dann gab es eine sehr, sehr lange Schlange. Nach ca. 2 Stunden bei 0 Grad Anstehen hatten wir endlich unsere Tickets und konnten die Tour um 10:15 Uhr mitmachen. Es ist sehr informativ gestaltet. Die Geschichte ist so traurig und grausam, dass man sich doch immer wieder fragt, wie so etwas passieren konnte. Am Ende unterhielt ich mich noch mit unserem Tourguide, und sie sagte, dass es im Winter mit 8000-9000 Besuchern noch wenige seien. Im Sommer seien es noch mehr.
Auf dem Weg nach Wien verbrachten wir noch einen Morgen in Bytom, der Geburtsstadt von Michaels Vater. Am Morgen war die Innenstadt wie ausgestorben, nur einige waren mit ihren Hunden unterwegs.

We walked through the old town and passed the castle, some university buildings and market stalls. We ended the day with an unplanned feast. Michi wanted several appetizers because he thought they were rather small... He thought! So there were unplanned amounts of pierogi plus our main courses. Our table neighbors meticulously watched whether we would eat everything 😅.
Since we were already here, we spontaneously decided to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp. We didn't think there would be soooo many visitors there. Since we didn't have tickets in advance, we were there at the opening time of 7:30 a.m., and even then there was a very, very long line. After about 2 hours of queuing at 0 degrees, we finally had our tickets and were able to join the tour at 10:15 a.m. It is very informative. The story is so sad and cruel that you keep asking yourself how something like this could happen. At the end I talked to our tour guide and she said that in winter with 8000-9000 visitors there are still few. In summer there are even more.
On the way to Vienna we spent another morning in Bytom, the birthplace of Michael's father. In the morning the city center was like extinct, only a few were out with their dogs.Lue lisää
