  • Rome- Vittoriano

    6. august 2019, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Well this was the total find of the day!!! Stumbled across this wonderful building by accident on the way to the Pantheon.
It was fabulous!! We got the panoramic lift to the very top which gave us 360 views of Rome- in my book this is a total must do.
Lucky for us there weren’t many people there at all which made it even better!

  • Rome - Colosseum

    6. august 2019, Italien ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Another early start but this time it was for the fast train from Verona to Rome.
Checked into our accommodation and then headed straight out to the Colosseum for our pre booked time slot- no flexibility with an European holiday in August!
Spent an hour or so in the Colosseum. Whilst appreciating the history of this structure I have to give it a D for disappointment as so much of it seems reconstructed. Good to see but didn’t make my heart sing.

  • Vatican City

    7. august 2019, Vatikanet ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Woke up to breakfast in bed delivered by the accommodation.
Set off for the Vatican City via the Castle of St Angelo.
We were in awe of what turned out to be the Supreme Court.
Luck was on our side as we bypassed the huge queue for St Peters Basilica.
The opulence of the Catholic Church, whilst being stunning, was somewhat stomach churning. However we both enjoyed a quick trip through it before heading to the Sistine Chapel

  • Sistine Chapel

    7. august 2019, Vatikanet ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

The Sistine Chapel and the subsequent gallerias were quite mind blowing- total sensory overload!
However it was a bit like IKEA- u just got on a conveyor belt of tour groups and thousands of other tourists and just got shunted along without the time or space to really appreciate such treasures until we got to the actual Sistine Chapel.
Once here we held our ground despite being told to move on by the security guards... only to accommodate the constant stream of 1000’s of more tourists. I did not pay my money, queue in 32 deg heat, walk through endless areas to be rushed out of the one thing we had come to see. Once we had had enough we left and promptly got the metro back to our air con!
Ps despite it saying no photos one of us managed a sneaky one!

  • Flixperience to Sorrento

    8. august 2019, Italien ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Well u had to be on our FlixBus from Rome to Sorrento to fully appreciate the experience of the driver playing sky sports loudly whilst driving, talking on his phone v loudly whilst negotiating hairpin bends at speed and playing music loud enough it felt like we were at a bad concert!! as per usual we got great value for money being 45 mins late.
Checked into our dodgy accommodation before hitting “town”.
Had a lovely dinner of freshly caught fish, on the water front at a family run restaurant with the lovely Lou, Nat and friends.
Had a lovely evening catching up before strolling uphill back to our accommodation- it is still soo hot!

  • So today we went to Capri

    9. august 2019, Italien ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

We finally got the ferry from Sorrento to Capri after walking around in the heat trying to find where to buy tickets that weren’t tour tickets (Italians do not make tourist’s lives easier by putting up little signs to say “ tickets here”)
With sweat running in rivulets and after queuing we got the fast ferry to Capri with a much welcomed breeze- to be honest I could have stayed on the boat!
Capri is basically a playground for the v rich and ? Famous.
We got the funicular ( more couldn’t find where to buy a ticket) up to the piazza and walked with the heaving masses around the narrow streets. We were going to get a bus to the outer edges of the island but they were rammed.
Life got better when I found the street of v high end designer shops- all with air con and outfits including a gold tracksuit from €600-€3000!!!
Got the early ferry back to Sorrento and found our private beach via an elevator down the cliff face!!
Had a great swim in the sea - total heaven.
We then went out for a lovely meal with Lou, Nat and friends before wandering home to our accomm.

  • Vesuvius

    10. august 2019, Italien ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

So today we planned to climb some of Vesuvius despite the heat. This turned out to be a great decision as it was cooler at the top of the 1200m volcano.
We got the train to Ercolano and then a bus that took us most of the way up.
It was then a 30 min steep slog to the top to be able to peer down into the enormous crater. It is still deemed active but last erupted March 1944.
At the top we were not only greeted with the crater but horrible stalls selling the most tacky gifts ever.... plus cans of beer and wine!!
We had a walk as far around as we could go and then walked back down to the bus to take us to the train back to Sorrento.
There was the most ghastly family of 12 on the train who preceded to throw all of their plastic rubbish out of the windows of the moving train- it made me feel sick. Then the accordion player got on busking on the packed and boiling hot train- could it get at worse??
A quick swim at the beach and then off out for dinner anda fabulous catch up with Kirsten, Rob, Harry and Max- friends of ours from PNG who now live in UK who r here on holiday!! Had a slight disaster getting home so ended up in a taxi thank god despite his atrocious rally car driving whilst arguing into his phone!!

Late afternoon saw us join Lou, Nat, Donna and Gail at the Hotel Aminta for a dip in the pool before a v lovely dinner on the terrace, overlooking Vesuvius for Lou’s actual bday.
Another amazing meal with great food, service and company.

  • Pompei- part 1

    13. august 2019, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Great 4 hours out at Pompei.
Easily got the early train after purchasing our “walking tour with an archaeologist” tickets-this was the best option after researching it.
Francesca our guide was Informative with the basics of what we were looking at starting with the gate to the city, the Basillica etc.
We learnt that even before Vesuvius covered it in ash and killed people with poisonous gases in 79AD, the City was being rebuilt due to an earthquake several years earlier.
The Romans certainly knew how to make roads with drainage, buildings with pipework and the most amazing frescos and mosaics-the photos couldn’t do it justice

  • Pompei - Part 3 - plaster people

    13. august 2019, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

So after the ash and gas killed the population of Pompei they were entombed.
The decompensation resulted in hollow “moulds” of their last resting positions.
Someone centuries later on discovering these decided to fill them with liquid plaster and make the plaster casts figures seen today.Læs mere

  • Last day in Sorrento

    14. august 2019, Italien ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Had a v productive day doing v little.
Had brekkie and spent the morning in town wandering through the narrow lanes, a little shopping and then more trip planning in a cafe with fast internet and air con.
It was much cooler today which gave us both a new lease of life.
Had our last swim in the eyeline of Vesuvius whilst enjoying the lovely temperature.
We then walked to Marina Grande and had a simple dinner on the beach listening to the sea- all v nice.

    15. august 2019, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Travel day today. Packed up and checked out of Hotel Desiree (v gladly after a v hot, noisy night).
Got the bus from Sorrento to Naples which was a shit fight when the driver couldn’t/ wouldn’t open the side luggage door. Cases had to be piled onto the v small bus.
At Naples we transferred onto a fast train to Rome travelling at a speedy 300kph
The travel gods were with us at Rome as we managed to get a bus to the airport leaving almost immediately.
Now just waiting for EasyJet to put up the gate and fly us safely to Gatwick... delayed sign came up whilst typing this- typical

  • London to Cornwall

    16. august 2019, England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Thanks to Lou and Nat we had a v comfy few hours sleep in cool temps.
Left Bromley at 8am dragging our bags on a bus, a train and 2x tubes to Paddington - across London in rush hour Friday traffic.
Boarded the 10.03 train Paddington to Penzance which turned into carnage as the seat reservation systems were broken and the train was rammed. We were lucky enough to get our assigned seats early and arrived in Cornwall at 3.10pm in the torrential rain and 17 degs.
Met by Mum and Pete and then went for a drink with Jake (nephew) and his gfriend Rhiannon before homemade dinner of my fave cottage pie.

  • Car boot sales and a sandy niece

    18. august 2019, England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Spent the morning at car boot sales with Mum and Pete although the best one was cancelled due to a heavy rain shower.
After lunch picked up the 6 yr old niece for a few hours.
Had a nice play in Helston Park followed by an ice cream for all of us.
With a spare hour we thought we would go and throw stones into the sea.
This turned into a swim in undies, no towel and arriving home wearing my spare shorts and a cardigan with a pile of wet and sandy clothes- great fun!!

Mum and Pete drove us to a little Cornish seaside village of Gorran Haven for a coffee.
This evening had a lovely catch up with my 2 nieces and nephew- sadly didn’t get a photo but was so lovely seeing them.

Beautiful summer day in Cornwall today saw us spend the morning at Roseudgeon with Kate getting more cornish cultural lessons!
In the afternoon we drove to one of my fave places - Porthtowan.
Had a pizza in the restaurant right on the beach and Alfie and I went exploring the local caves at low tide.
Dinner at my sisters resulted in my niece being sick- I don’t think 30 mins of a vigorous gymnastic “show” after spag bol, chocolate trifle, lemon cheesecake and coke was a great idea!!!
