    Hobart!!!

    January 10, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Just arrived in Slowbart. Staying at Salamanca which is old and awesome. Zach is being mildly annoying. Jesse just spilt a whole pint of Guinness on me. Great times!!!!

  • Hobart day 2

    January 11, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Everyone is having a great time, mainly because I bought a frisby. We have traveled 2000km to throw a frisby. My god!!!
Zach and Jesse both lost the aerobie in the trees a few times, so I spent a fair bit of time throwing my things into trees, while passers by thought I looked a bit strange. Often the aerobic would come down, but a thong or two would stay up the tree!!!
I think I walked home with one thing that night.
But the ice cream, chocolate, beer, food is awesome here too.
Saw some live, singer songwriter music at the Irish pub around the corner from our hotel that night.

  • Mt Field, day 3

    January 12, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Picked up the campervan, and drove an hour north to Bushy Park for a 4 hour kayak on the Derwent river. Then went 20 mins up the road to a pick your own raspberry farm. $3 each to go in and $14 a kilo for any fruit that you didn't eat but put in the bucket.
Staying at Mt Field national park on the Tyenna river. Jesse and I lost 6 lures in the bloody creek. I've got another packet of lures but I told him we ran out! He's now trying to make a bow and arrow to hunt trout with. It's 9:30 pm so I took the pocket knife of him and sent him to bed. Also threw the frisby for another hour today with Zach. He's pretty good but not as good as me. Amy got grass allergies and her face swelled up a bit, but I just laughed at her and told her we weren't going to drive back to Hobart because we'd already paid $16 for the campsite!

  • Mt Field - Port Arthur

    January 14, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Went for a great walk in the rain to Russel falls in Mt Field Nat Park. Zach and Jesse stripped off and swam under the waterfalls, much to the delight of a Japanese tour group that came along.
Massive pub lunch and New Norfolk (Jesse was "hangry")
Stopped at Richmond Bridge, the oldest bridge in Australia.
Arrived at Port Arthur caravan park. Walked to the beach and made a camp fire.

  • Port Arthur Historic Site

    January 14, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Walked for 30mins with two complaining history students, from the caravan park to Port Arthur. Absolutely amazing experience, including the buildings, ship building, logging, gardens, prisoners lives. The model prison, the third prison in the world to use psychological torture including solitary confinement. What really made it so great was the appreciation in the faces of my children when they receive ALL THOSE HISTORY LESSONS.Read more

  • Day 6. Port Arthur - Ross

    January 15, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Woke up in Port Arthur. Hit the Tassie Devil zoo at 10am. Really awesome especially when 3 devils fought over the same piece of wallaby! Great kangaroo feeding too. And quolls!
Drove 1.5 hours north to Ross. A river town with the 3rd oldest bridge in Australia.
On the way Jesse and I jumped an electric fence and (illegally) harvested some wheat!
We are going fishing in the river again tonight. No luck this arvo. Apparently there are platypus here too.
Having Tassie red wine on the river banks now.

  • Great Lake - day 7

    January 16, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Woke up in Ross. 5 mins after waking we all played aerobie. Yay!!!!
Drove up the back roads, with lots of wild flowers, poppy fields, sheep and cows.
Very bleak up on the plateau.
Arrived at Great Lake - apparently one of THE BEST trout fishing spots in Tas.
Ate a pizza and played darts at the pub. We are staying at the back of the Great Lake Hotel. It has a lovely, enormous, gravel car park. Amy is particularly fond of the view because she's not into fishing so much.
Spent $50 on tackle, worms and lures. Zach lost $30 worth of tackle, Jesse lost $20 worth.
    Caught ZERO fish!!!!!!
    Noooooooooo!!!!!!!
Luckily we are going to wake up at 5 am and go fishing again in the morning!!!!

Drove from the bleak highlands to beautiful Deloraine on the Meander river. Very artsy-crafty town. Spent a lazy day on the river bank swimming, fishing, frisbying, drinking wine, eating cheese, listening to music and having a great lunch at a local cafe.
Saw lots of baby ducks who ate bread from our hands.
Also saw an echidna and a platypus (and a thylacine) on the same day!
